UPDATE 4/20/09 - We have been so busy, I can't believe I haven't given an update in a few months!
We've had Twiggy for a year now and I can't believe how the time has flown by. She is just THE best
boxer girl. Let's see, since our last update she had gone to the beach a few times and run like the wind.
She met a couple of new friends and actually ran into the water with them. Believe me, the water here in
the winter is COLD! She also went on another home check. She was her usual friendly self, smothering
her new people friends with boxer kisses. She has learned to "talk" to my husband in the morning to
wake him up. She puts a toy on the bed and nudges it over to him and then does her "moan." It's so
pathetic, you just have to laugh. When she is ready for dinner, she goes in her cage (which is in the
kitchen) and quietly sits or lays down until we feed her. She only needs to go in her cage if we are going
to be gone for a while during the day. She doesn't mind because she always gets a kong filled
with peanut butter and treats! She still gets herself into a little mischief when unattended for longer
periods of time - plastic containers are her favorite target. At night she sleeps in one of our rooms.
Usually there is an argument about who gets to sleep with her. She doesn't care as long as she is with
someone. That's all for now!
UPDATE 12/20/08 - Twiggy went on her fist home check today and made herself right at home.
Kisses galore, sniffing around, and stretching out on the floor. She was ready to move in! We got snow
last night and this is the first time we've seen her in it. She doesn't really like it at all, which is surprising
as she was found as a stray in Maine. She tip-toed through the snow to find a bathroom spot, did her
thing, and then ran back in the house. We took her out with us to play and she kept running back up on
the deck to go inside. I guess we must be pampering the little princess too much. She'd rather run
through the downstairs at a hundred mph chasing a ball than run out in the snow! Our Christmas tree is
still standing and all the ornaments are in tact. We have a few presents under the tree and they all still
have their wrapping paper on them. Let's hope she can hold out for a few more days and not get too
curious. Merry Christmas everyone!
UPDATE 11/19/08 - OK, Twiggy has learned how to wash dishes! I left a few dirty food containers in
the sink and left the house to take the kids to school. I returned about an hour later with the plastic
containers in different rooms of the house, licked totally clean! I knew she could get stuff off the
counter, but had no idea she could get them out of the sink. From now on all countertops and sinks will
be cleared before we leave the house! Other than that the only other news is that she graduated from
her Basic Training II class. She can do a 10 minute down-stay off lead with a few other dogs near her
doing the same thing. That's quite an accomplishment for her. We can't wait for the snow to see how
she likes it!
UPDATE 10/27/08 - Time sure has flown by. I'm a little late with my update, but we have been pretty
busy. Twiggy has been taking her Basic Training II course. In our class there's 8 dogs. One is a
miniature doberman and another is great dane, which is as big as a horse. Twiggy is still not too sure
about the great dane, but loves being around all the other dogs. She is first in her class doing recalls.
When I say, "Come," she comes flying at me like a bullet and stops short into a beautiful sit right in front
of me. She'll do anything for a treat! We had company over the other night for dinner. Of course, they
all loved her. She wiggled and vibrated for about 10 minutes and then went on her bed to curl up for a
nap. I finally found a toy that she hasn't been able to chew to pieces. It's made of tennis ball material
and has a tennis ball on each end and a tube in the middle. It squeaks and bounces when you throw it.
You can get them at Petsmart. I recommend it to anyone. She plays with it every day and hasn't put a
hole in it yet.
UPDATE 9/14/08 - We've had Twiggy for five months now. It seems like she has always been with us.
We took her camping with us over Memorial Day weekend and she was great. She loved sleeping in
the tent. She just couldn't decide which of her people friends she wanted to sleep next to, so she kept
moving around. However, she didn't want to sit on the "dirty" ground, and managed to always find
someone's camp chair to sit in. Today she was sleeping on the couch with my husband watching
football all afternoon. Twigyy has now earned the priveledge of being out of her crate when we are
gone for 1/2 a day or less and she's been fine. We just have to make sure there isn't anything on the
counter that resembles food. In a couple of weeks she is starting her Basic Training II course. Hopefully
she hasn't forgotten all she learned in Basic Training I in May!
UPDATE 8/11/08 - We just returned from a vacation in NH on a lake. Twiggy loved it. Lots of new
smells and sights. My daughter took her for "swimming" lessons in the lake. Twiggy was less than
enthusiastic and couldn't wait to get back to shore. You could tell it was the first time she tried to swim.
We took her for a walk through town and she walked very well with all comings and goings. She is very
attached to us. We left her in her crate for a couple of hours and she barked almost the entire time (so
the staff at the campground said). We'll have to work on her being able to be alone for a little while. I
think she has gotten spoiled over the summer with someone home all the time. Her favorite game is to
chase a tennis ball and then rip it to shreds. She also loves to chew on the stuffed toys with the
squeakers. Right now she is curled in a little ball on the couch waiting for the kids to wake up. Ahh the
life of a dog.
UPDATE 7/12/08 - It's hard to believe 3 months have gone by since we adopted Twiggy. She just
loves everyone she meets and everyone who meets her just loves her and can't believe she was a stray.
You can forget about ever sitting on a couch by yourself anymore at our house. As soon as you sit
down, Twiggy is up there with her head on your lap. No need to wash your face either. Boxer kisses
are plentiful morning, noon, and night. We thought we had the counter surfing habit kicked until this
week. I was on the phone in the room next to the kitchen when I heard some rattling. I walked in the
kitchen, and there she was with her head stuffed in a stock pot that I had put butter in to make rice
krispy treats. Guilty as charged! Oh well, I guess we have to keep working on that bad habit. Till next
month...
UPDATE 6/7/08 - Twiggy is doing awesome!!! She is now a whopping 47.5 pounds! She's come a
long way since she was brought in at just 40 pounds. And her hystiocytoma is gone. She will graduate
from her training class next week. They love her there so much we signed up for level 2 class in
September. Twiggy's only vice now is flip flops. She's gone through two pair. We are just enjoying the
nice weather for our walks, running around the yard, and going for car rides every day. Our neighbors
just got a labradoodle puppy, so she's got a paymate right next door. Till next month ...
UPDATE 5/10/08 - Twiggy is doing great! We have been working on her housetraining. She's been
getting better. We had to limit her water to three bowls a day (with breakfast, noon, and with dinner).
She drinks it all at once and then lets out a very unladylike belch!
We have been to two obedience classes and she can sit, down, sit-stay, down-stay, and heel. She
really wants to play with all the dogs in the class. So much so that our first class she was trying to get to
a lab next to us and she pulled me over! There I was laying on the floor. Nice impression on the first
day of class. The instructor made me get a choke training collar after that display! We are also working
on her jumping on people when she is playing or really excited.
She does not like to stay outside unless we are with her. She pretty much wants to be where ever we
are. She LOVES her walks and usually sleeps for a couple hours after them. She has the best
temperment. She loves everyone she meets: big, small, young, and old.
She has a small hystiocytoma on her front leg. The vet said it should go away in a month. It almost went
away and then came back again. We're taking her back the vet this week for a re-check.
She's the sweetest boxer girl and we all love her to pieces! We are so thankful to be able to take care
of her.
4/12/08 - Twiggy has been adopted!
3/25/08 - Twiggy is making great strides with her weight. I have had to loosen her collar twice. She will
see Dr. Matt on Thursday to be spay and have a heartworm test. Twiggy plays well with all the other
dogs here and is super happy to have any attention at all. She is not doing very well with housebreaking
though, she has quite a few accidents including in her crate. I do not think Twiggy has spent much time
in the house as she needs some house manners. I think Twiggy will have to be treated like a young
puppy and start from the beginning with her training. I think she would do well with a fenced yard to
play in and a young dog to keep her busy. She is quite the busy body. We will update you again after
her vet visit Thursday. I do not think this sweet girl will be around to long.
3/17/08 - I picked Twiggy up today from one of the great shelters we work with. We decided to name
her Twiggy as she is stick thin but absolutely gorgeous, so we thought it would be approriate to name
her after a super model. Twiggy was picked up as a stray so we know very little about her, we will
update you as we get to know her. The one thing I can tell you is she loves everyone she meets, she
loves to give kisses and she is absolutely adorable! More updates & pictures soon.
3/8/08 - Twiggy made her way to the vets, she had gained 5 pounds. She was spay and tested
negative for heartworm and lyme. Everyone at the vets loved her and could not believe what a great
dog she is. Twiggy loves everyone. She even met a cat at the vets and didn't seem to have much interest
in him either. Twiggy is happy, happy, happy. My cousin came to visit this weekend with her 4 kids.
Twiggy thought she was in heaven. She didn't know which kid to play with but went right to the
youngest and covered him with kisses. Twiggy is getting better on her housebreaking but still has a ways
to go. She is going to need someone to be consistent with her and take her out often. She will definitely
be worth the effort. She is a great dog.
