UPDATE 9/06/09
GUESS WHAT? TIKI ISN'T SCRATCHING ANYMORE!!!! AFTER WE GOT HOME FROM
HELEN'S IN BRUNSWICK WE NOTICED THAT TIKI DOESN'T EVEN SCRATCH
OCCASIONALLY. MUST BE THAT GREAT MAINE WEATHER, EH? WHAT A
HANDSOME BOXER HE'S TURNED OUT TO BE. HE STILL TAKES THYROID MEDS &
KETOCONAZOLE FOR YEAST BUILDUP ON HIS SKIN. ON THURSDAY HE'S HAVING
HIS LONG DEWCLAW REMOVED BY DR JIM TOMPSETT. WHEN I GO TO PICK HIM UP
THAT AFTERNOON BOB IS GETTING A CHECKUP & DR T IS GOING TO DISCUSS
PUTTING BOB IN THE DEGENERATIVE MYELOPATHY STUDY WITH US.
TIKI HAS THE APPETITE OF FOUR BOXERS BUT HE'S SO HYPER THAT HE ONLY
WEIGHS 74#. HIS COAT IS FULLY GROWN IN & LONG. HE GETS FURMINATED
EVERY FEW DAYS & TOENAILS TRIMMED EVERY SUNDAY. WE SHOWER HIM DAILY
WITH NEUTROGENA DANDRUFF SHAMPOO & IF WE DON'T HE STANDS BY THE
SHOWER DOOR UNTIL HE GETS SHOWERED. HE HAS A SEVERE EARWAX PROBLEM
IN HIS RIGHT EAR & THE CANAL HAS SHRUNK UP. WE USE BORIC ACID WET-WIPES
TO CLEAN HIS EARS & THAT SEEMS TO DO THE BEST JOB. WE BRUSH HIS TEETH AT
LEAST ONCE A WEEK WITH TOM'S SPEARMINT TOOTHPASTE.
WE'LL TRY TO GET HIS PICTURE WITH GALI & BOB POSTED AS SOON AS WE GET
ALL THREE IN ONE LOCATION SIMULTANEOUSLY.
WHAT A TREASURE!!!
UPDATE 8/16/08 - TIKI HAS BEEN VERY ILL FOR THE LAST 10 DAYS. HOWEVER, WE
TOOK HIM TO OUR VET'S OFFICE LAST MONDAY. OUR REGULAR VET INJURED
HIMSELF RECENTLY SO TIKI WAS SEEN BY A TEMP VET. THE MINUTE SHE SAW TIKI
SHE SAID TIKI HAD A THYROID PROBLEM NOT ALLERGIES. DR MANSEK DREW
BLOOD & YESTERDAY WHEN I TOOK GALI FOR HER PHYSICAL I FOUND OUT TIKI
DEFINITELY HAS HYPOTHYROIDISM. IN FACT HIS THYROID LEVELS WERE LESS
THAN HALF WHAT THEY SHOULD BE. TIKI STARTS TREATMENT ON MONDAY
WHEN DR MANSEK RETURNS. WE'LL KEEP YOU UPDATED ON HIS CONDITION.
7/08 - Tiki has been adopted!
6/12/08 - Once again Tiki started to itch. I called up the vet and and Tiki is trying out taking 1/2 a
steroid pill twice a day to help relieve the itching. Tiki has been on the pills since last Friday and has
been less itchy everyday. I'm not sure how much weight Tiki has put on in the last month but he looks
GREAT! Tiki also has a tendency to counter surf. I went away for half the day leaving some hamburger
buns on the counter and I came home to find an empty bag laying on the living room floor. I don't think
he had enough for breakfast. I haven't had to clean Tiki's ears for him but a few times over the past
month. They don't seem to bother him as much.
Tiki continues to get along with everyone and looks forward to the neighbor's 5yr old grand-daughter to
come over with the occasional treat. Tiki likes to spend his day wrestling with the other dogs,
sunbathing, eating (of course), taking walks, and horsing around in the backyard. Everyday when I
come home from work I will find Tiki sitting at the back door waiting for me. Tiki is such a sweetheart
and he loves to take car rides. Tiki will just sit in his seat and look at everything go by. He's a really
good passenger. More to follow soon.....
5/14/08 - Tiki has really blossomed since he has been with us. He has started playing with the other
dogs and when he feels like he will even play fetch. Tiki looks and acts like a completely different dog. I
had to take Tiki back to the vet at the beginning of the month because he started itching again and
shaking his head alot. The vet gave him another shot of Depomedrol and his allergies have calmed
down again. The vet and I have talked about possibly trying him on oral steroids if he starts to itch again
at the end of the month. We continue to give Tiki a bath every week to help relieve any itching he may
have as well.
When Tiki first got here he showed some signs of food aggression. The aggression has since subsided.
Tiki has gained a total of 14 lbs since he has been with us. I can't get over how great he looks now.
Due to the allergies he will always have some hair loss in certain areas and his ears are really thick. I
have found that cleaning Tiki's ears a couple times a week helps him out a lot. He likes to be diffiicult
when you're cleaning them, but he sure is affectionate afterwards.
I don't feel comfortable enough to say that Tiki is great with smaller children. However, when my
neighbor's 5 yr old granddaughter comes over Tiki's face just lights up and his tail just starts a waggin'.
Tiki doesn’t jump on anybody and he doesn't bark unless you entice him too. Tiki would make a
wonderful addition to any home. He is such a loving, sweet, wonderful boy.
4/6/08 - Tiki is a well mannered 7 year old fawn boy with a black mask. I would like to say he has a
white chest but he really doesn't have much hair there at the moment. Tiki has one dew claw, we can
feel the other is still under the skin. Tiki's tail is docked and his ears are natural. There are 3 white spots
about the size of a dime on his back. Tiki is great with teenager's, but we don't know if he is good with
smaller children. We also don't know if Tiki is good around cats. I do know that on walks Tiki has
come across a few cats and he could care less about them. Tiki is really good with the other dogs, but
he seems to be a little intimidated when they start to play a little rough.
We went to the vet's this past Tuesday and Tiki was given a clean bill of health. Tiki does not have
mange but he does have enviromental allergies. Tiki was given a shot of Depomedrol and he has done
very well not scratching, he is also getting some hair back. Along with the Depomedrol Tiki has to
bathed once a week with Malaseb shampoo. Tiki weighed in at 56 lbs. We thought it was great that he
gained 4 pounds in 4 days. I've been giving Tiki 3 meals a day to get him back up to a good weight.
Today he weighs in at 58lbs. Tiki has some food aggression, but I expected that with him being so thin.
We are trying to teach him that the food supply is neverending and he doesn't need to be upset.
Tiki hasn't been very active since he's been here. All he really wants to do is eat and sleep. Occasionally
he will play with you for a few minutes and then go lay back down. He's not used to receiving a lot of
affection or attention but he's ecstatic when he gets it. All around Tiki is a wonderful dog and would
love to find his forever home.
3/31/08 - Jill picked this guy up from a shelter on Friday. He was actually an owner surrender to them.
He weighs in at 52 lbs. We were told he has allergys but it's possible he may have demodex mange as
well. I gave him 2 baths right away and he still looks bad. We'll know more after we visit the vet
tomorrow.
