| UPDATE 5/31/09 - It's only been 6 months? It feels like Sage has been with us her whole life. She is just the best dog. It's hard to believe we'll be celebrating her 8th birthday in a few weeks - she has the energy and personality of a puppy. Watching her try to catch that little nub of a tail gets me hysterical every time. Miss Sage passed her obedience with flying colors, although she was a little naughty on her last day. Sensing she didn't have much time left to meet all the other dogs and people, she took the opportunity during an off-leash test to bolt away from me and greet everyone, deftly avoiding my attempts to corral her. She is a social butterfly and loves meeting everyone. This can get her in trouble, especially when she employs her selective deafness. If I don't watch her every minute, she is bound to run out of our yard to go for a run with a family of bikers, or follow a squirrel into the woods, or play basketball with the kids across the street, or... She's really a charmer and Ryan, her big brother Buster, and I love that she's here. UPDATE 1/13/09 - It’s heartbreaking to write this update on Sage and Dakota. On December 31, we lost Dakota very suddenly and very unexpectedly to a heart attack. She had been a happy, healthy dog up to that point. Her initial vet check when we first got them came up great – although we were all slightly concerned with the amount she panted, so we scheduled an ultrasound for both Sage and Dakota in the beginning of January. She was in great spirits that entire day, having a great breakfast, going for a ride to the grocery store, playing outside, and getting some extra illegal snoozes in bed with me. By 2pm, she was panting uncontrollably and could not stand on her own. We called the vet, but by the time Ryan carried her to the car, she was gone. We are devastated to lose her. She was such a good girl – so sweet and laid back. Buster loved her immediately, and she went nowhere without Sage. She was a great foil to Sagie – quietly carrying around her toy of choice (usually a plush soccer ball or a rubber pig) or cuddling with me or Ryan while Sage amused everyone with her exuberant antics. We miss her terribly and wish we had more time to get to know her. Sage is doing very well. She and Buster have bonded incredibly fast and they are so cute together. She is definitely no snow dog, though! She refuses to step one pretty paw into the snow, so at bathroom time, she follows the shoveled path and then runs, top speed, back to the front door where she dances until someone lets her in. She is so much fun, has no bad habits to speak of (except snoring like a 300 pound lumberjack), and is immediately loved by everyone that meets her. With her energy level, it’s hard to believe she’s 7 years old! Sage did have her ultrasound last week and everything came out just fine – and of course she charmed the pants off of everyone at the vet. 3 techs came out to say goodbye to her when I picked her up! We are so glad to have Miss Sage with us. 12/12/08 - Sage & Dakota have been adopted! 11/11/08 - Sage and Dakota have graced my house with their presence. They are littler mates are absolutely in love with each other. They follow each other around in the house and yard. They are both beautiful petite boxers. So far Sage seems to be the leader and Dakota will follow her around. She was the first to explore the yard, eat and drink and give kisses. Sage is also an attention hog. She will jump on you to give you kisses and will give Dakota a couple smacks to get her out of the way. Dakota is a little more laid back. She is not much of jumper, she will patiently wait her turn. They are not crate trained but were left uncrated in the kitchen today and did fine. They must have played a good game of food bowl hockey as it started on one side and ended up on the other. They are not leash trained but they are such peanuts that I could walk them both with one hand. Dakota stayed right beside me while Sage was leading and exploring. They know how to sit and give paw. Sage is working on sitting to get attention instead of jumping. They lived with a small child and had been around many children in their previous home so they would be good with children of any age with a little supervision. They also lived with a cat. Once up to date on all shots I will introduce them to mine. These girls are very mellow. They do not have separation anxiety, they do not bark or try to escape if you open the door. They have been a joy so far. Tomorrow is a holiday so we will take a field trip and see how they are in the car. 11/10/08 - Our newest members have arrived. Sage and Dakota are litter mates and been together their whole lives. They are a little stressed but seem to be adjusting. They are so lovable. All they want to do is kiss, kiss, kiss. So far Sage seems to be the leader and Dakota follows her around. These two are adorable. All they want to do is love and be loved. They are constantly looking for each other if one wanders off in the yard. |
