ROCKY BOJANGLES
2/24/08 - Well, Rocky has been here a couple of weeks now and he is fitting in pretty well with the rest of the Clan, 2 boxers a cockatiel, a macaw parrot and my husband.  The great thing is this guy is a lover boy, he loves to snuggle.  I'm going to have to get a full size sofa!! The loveseat isn't big enough for all of the dogs to be touching the human and still have a peice of their body actually ON the loveseat. When I stop laughing and it happens next I will try to get a picture, quite Funny!!

Rocky continues to put on the pounds.  The bumps were not going away so we called the vet,  the vet says he is allergic to the food I had been feeding, Canidae, so I have Rocky on hamburger and rice and I got Lamb & Rice formula food for him and his skin seems to be clearing up.  He gets a benadryl at bedtime so he doesn't itch all night.  The vet says the benadryl can go away completely when his skin is cleared up. Rocky has not had any episodes of diarhea in a while, he seems to be completely housbroken when he feels well (not sick) and he has gone 7-8 hours without any accidents while I am at work if my husband is not home... Rocky is a complete gentleman with people, he is good when left in the house with the other boxer boys.  He is getting very energetic and he is fiesty when he plays with the other dogs.  He is smart and often is the first to wrestle away a toy. He LOVES little people as well as BIG people. He even likes the Mailman, the mailman says to Rocky, ""you're the NICE one!! Compared to Lucky who is not a fan of the mailman...Rocky would love to become a full time member of a family that includes little people!!

Rocky went to the vet yesterday because he continues to have diarhea (sp?) the stool sample I got had blood in it. The vet said he is negative for parasites, etc... He gave us some Flagyl and suggested benadryl also.  Rocky has put on weight, he is at SIXTY POUNDS!!!! Because he needs to get his digestion back on track Rocky continues to have a very short window from the time he lets you know he needs out until he goes, no matter where he is. The poor guy has had accidents at the door as I was trying to get it open!   We hope the flagyl will help. If not we will try a different diet. He is getting chicken and rice as of today.  He LOVES food and loves to eat, he scarfs up any food left in anybody's dish, I have given up washing the bowls, that has become Rocky's chore(lol!!). At the vets he met a cat and a couple of small dogs, as well as some nice people, he likes EVERYBODY!  Rocky has not been crated at all. He is gated in my kitchen and he does really well in there. He has been alone for 7-9 hours a day this week as my husband is away on business. Not a problem and he does not seem stressed at all. He goes to his bed with a peanut butter kong toy and he's happy.  Rocky walked into Lucky's crate lay down and took a nap, the door was not closed nor was he alone. The vet did say that Rocky has broken both the upper & lower Canine (fang) teeth on his left side. He said they are still functional, and Rocky has silver on his teeth from gnawing on the crate. Perhaps gating him along with a companion(?) might be the answer for this guy.   By the way, a friend from my horse show days brought me some of her old oxers & jumps.    I set one up in the back yard and after a little sniffing I had ALL THREE boxers jumping over it for treats. It was a hoot!  We might be able to have some agility Boxers!!

Rocky moved to a different foster home on Saturday as he needed someone home more often.  Here is an update from his new foster home:  Rocky has not been crated at all. In fact he enjoyed the Super Bowl from his nice cozy dog bed in front of the wood stove. He hopped in bed with my husband this morning!!

He is more energetic, never misses a treat or a meal. Lucky & Hercules let him eat out of their dishes which is amazing since Lucky is normally very food aggressive. They must sense that he needs the food more. they both know that hungry feeling!.

He has had accidents in the house but he does try to let you know but, you only have a minute to get him outside!!  More updates soon!

We had another great discovery with Rocky this weekend, he is great with Sandi and does not have the dominance issues his brother Tyson does!  He had no issues meeting her and does not mind her at all.  He also has not reacted to Tigger, my other foster dog, when he comes to his crate or vice versa.  I really see Rocky as being fine as an only dog or with another dog.  He loves to cuddle with me on the couch now or will go to the nearest dog bed when the couch is too crowded for him (when Sandi and JJ are on the couch too with me).  He's a sweet boy and I am trying to feed him a few times a day to make up for the energy he burns when he's stressed out about being crated when I am at work or not home.  He is so skinny and I hate seeing his red lips from chewing on the crate all day.  He really needs someone home more than me so he can get up to a good weight and not stress out anymore.  Anyone ready to help Rocky be happy again?

Yeah!  Rocky is going to be fine to live with cats!  He was curious with J.J. the last few times I worked with him, but then would quickly get bored with my cat & go onto other things.  Of course a running J.J. is a game though, right!? LOL

I am having a hard time getting and keeping weight on Rocky as he has such anxiety about being crated.  He just uses up so much energy from being stressed out about the crate.  Poor guy's face is red too from chewing on the doors.  I have tried him in a varikennel style and wire one and he is the same in both.  Rocky will need a home where he is either not crated or crated very rarely.  He is a sweet boy that just wants to be with you or nearby.  Someone who doesn't work long days would be his ideal home.  Is that you? .

Rocky is doing very well and is also a very sweet boy!  He is great with me & his brother Tyson and is now neutered and ready to go home.  He is not doing well with being crated though and has severe anxiety about that.  I think he would be happier with someone that is home more often so he does not have to be alone as much.  I have tried him with my cat and he is very curious, but nothing like the prey drive that Tyson has.  I will continue to work with Rocky alone with J.J. to see if he can live with a cat.  After the unsuccessful attempt to introduce his brother Tyson to my girl & foster boy, I have not had a chance to try Rocky with either of them yet.  As of right now, I can say he gets along great with Tyson & could go to a home with him or be placed as an only dog.  More updates as I am able to try him with my girl.

Rocky Bojangles & his brother, Tyson are two very handsome 4 year old brindle boys.  They were surrendered to a local shelter we work with because of a change in the owners' living situation.  They both get along great with each other, but the shelter said they were not so wonderful with meeting some other dogs, but that was in the stressful shelter environment.  Once they have had some more time to settle in I will try them with my boxer girl Sandi to see how they do.  They were overly interested in J.J.,my cat, but only met him when he was outside, so he may have been thought of as a giant squirrel! :)  More intros to come with J.J. & the boys too later this week.

They are all up to date on their shots, heartworm & lyme negative & will be neutered on Wednesday.  They are both super sweet with me, just a little crazy as they do not seem to have learned too much obedience wise.  Their owners did not crate them & left them out in the house when they were not home & said they were not destructive, but did have occasional accidents.  Both are learning the art of crate training here & doing very well with that so far (though a little complaining, drooling & crying does happen).  More updates soon on these boys, if someone is looking for one boy or a pair of boys, they will be ready to go home soon!
