| UPDATE 4/23/09 - Riley is Riley. Still loves to run around like he were a gray hound chasing his ball outside or playing tug of war in the house. He's my bud and still loves to go for rides in the truck. On his latest vet visit his hip dysplasia was checked and considered to be of no concern. Unfortunately his hyper activity has recently caused an ACL injury to his left rear leg. How it happened is unkown but if you clould see how he jumps around and twists his body you can understand how it would happen. He still runs and jumps around like an idiot as if nothing is hurting him. We meet with the vet next week to determine what course of action will be taken. I am sure surgery is going to be the recommended action but I don't know how we are going to keep him quieted down for two months during his recovery as he is just too active. Other than that Riley is loved by everyone !!!! UPDATE 1/18/09 - Three months into the "Life of Riley" and all is going well. He has adapted very well with us and gets along fine with our Cocker. He still wants to rough house with her but she still wants nothing to do with it. He is very good with people. We have found that he can be aggressive with other larger dogs. Riley has one more Obedience Training class remaining before he graduates. His instructor has spoken very highly of him. Unfortunately when we first arrive for a class session all he wants to do is play with the other dogs. It takes about half the class period to settle him down. Riley loves to play in the snow chasing his ball. He kicks it around with his paws like a soccer player and pushes it with his nose. Riley has messed in the house twice and urinated twice. We don't know why as there has been no pattern to his actions. We had a rather funny experience at Xmas when I brought Riley to my daughter's house. Riley was sniffing around and then walked up to the Xmas tree and urinated on it. At the last traing class he also urinated on the classroom wall. Again it has been difficult trying to understand his actions. Stay tuned for further adventures in the "Life of Riley". UPDATE 11/17/08 - Talk about "The Life of Riley" - What an animal!!!He has made himself right at home and gets along just fine with our Cocker named Cara.He has taken over my futon in my den and that is where he sleeps. It gets a little cozy when I try to take a nap. We took Riley to the vet and she couldn't get over how beautiful and muscular he was. He was perfectly calm during the visit and she said his weight was ideal at 68lbs. She said it has been awhile since she has seen such a calm well mannered Boxer. Riley starts his obedience classes this week. He already knows his basic commands so he should do just fine. We have to work on his "Stay" and heeling. We gave up trying to crate train him as he destoyed everything in the crate. We found out quickly that he can be left alone in the house with Cara. It seems he just goes to the futon and sleeps. My wife takes him on her three mile walk each day and I spend time with him out doors chasing his ball and playing tug of war with his toy. He makes me laugh when the ball goes in the leaves. He pushes it around with his paws or buries his head under the leaves pushing it with his nose. I think he must have some Greyhound in his blood. I have never seen a boxer that can run as fast as he can. Riley loves to ride in my truck - he sits behind me and just looks out the window and enjoys the ride. Needless to say we absolutely love Riley. He loves people and does his protective thing by barking at vehicles and people that come around the house. He gets along great with all our neighbors. He has already brought a great deal of happiness into our home. Stayed tuned for the next chapter in "The Life of Riley" !! 10/16/08 - Riley has been adopted! 10/8/08 - Today we took Riley back to the vet to have his sore leg checked. Riley does have hip dysplasia. I know it sounds crazy but I was actually relieved to hear it. I was so worried he had some undiscovered injury or torn something or other. My boxer also has hip dysplasia and may at some point need surgery as well. Dr. Alfred said that he would put Riley on 50 mg of Rimadyl twice daily but also told me about a great supplement that he personally guarantees to work like no other. He has his own dog on Phycox JS soft chews. He said that Riley could come off the Rimadyl after just a short time on the supplement and encourages his new family to discuss this with their vet. He did say that surgery may be needed as Riley gets on in years but maintaining a healthy weight and having a good diet will be key to keeping Riley pain free. As for Riley, it would have brought tears to your eyes. This little guy just let our vet rotate and pull on his sore leg without so much as a whimper. I can not say enough about this amazing dog. He is an excellent judge of character, he has a warm soft old soul in a young body that is in repair, and when he is adopted by his new family they will want to give him the world. He is loving, silly, goofy, gentle young man who will be grateful for all the kindness he will be given in the future by his new family. 10/7/08 - Riley is doing so great here. It's been a little embarrassing to realize he is better trained than my own boxer! He knows come, sit, down, leave it, and he actually brings the ball back when you play fetch with him! LOL Oh Lucy, I have some work to do with my own boxer! We are still working on the crate training with Riley. He does go into the crate without a fight but he's still not loving it. I am sure he barks after I leave but when I come home just a short time later all is quiet. He loves toys and is always chewing but he only chews the dog toys. He still needs to gain more weight even with all the extras I give him. I think it would be best if he were fed a mix of puppy and adult food until he fills out a bit. We have noticed Riley having some pain in one of his hind legs or feet. He has whimpered and favored his back leg a couple of times. I think it might be due to a little cut on his pad but I am taking him back to the vet to make sure he's 100% before he goes to his forever home. I know the kids and I will be so very sad to see him go, but we know how important it is to keep fostering. The family that gets to take this boy home as their own will be one very lucky family. 09/27/08 - Please welcome Riley. We were told that Riley was given up by his owners for being protective. His family did not want to take the time to socialize him or train him, so he has spent far too much time being kept in the house away from the world and they didn't want to deal with him anymore. How sad! Riley arrived here on Tuesday. He is a bit timid with adults so far but LOVES children. Riley absolutely loves our nine and thirteen year old children. At his vet appointment he was immediately drawn to a four year old girl and was just in love with her. When we met Riley on transport he was unsure of all of the adults in the rest stop but wanted to kiss every child in sight. He rode home with his head on my son's lap and was so good in the car for the entire ride. Today Riley went to his vet appointment and was given a clean bill of health! I was so relieved. The vet told me that Riley could gain at least five more pounds but will start to fill out more when he gets older. The Vet said he can't even be two years yet by the look of his teeth and body. This boy has huge potential for any home willing to make sure Riley gets the socialization he's missed and needs. He is just a little frightened puppy. New dog introductions take time. When our dog Maxx is and Riley were introduced it was with a baby gate between them and after a short time of figuring out that Maxx wasn't going to hurt him Riley was all wiggle bum! Riley needs time to adjust and someone to give him just that...their time. You can't help but love this boy. He is soft and sweet and so silly. He throws his toys over his head and entertains himself. By far Bailey's favorite thing is fetch with a tennis ball. As long as you will throw he is willing to fetch. All of his play is so gentle. Riley was never leashed by his previous owners and comes when called although we wouldn't recommend testing him until he has completed basic obedience class and really bonds with his new family. Riley is the kind of dog you want to just scoop up in your arms and cuddle forever. His new family will be truly blessed to have him. He has is really a great puppy and he is already housebroken and has excellent house manners! |
