PELLA
UPDATE 3/28/08 - Pelle is doing great!  She still doesn't like going into her crate but we are slowly
working on that.  Fortunately, she doesn't have to go in very often.
We started obedience classes last weekend at Animal Behavior Consultants in Windham.  Pelle loved
all the other dogs and got along well with everyone.  =)  My cousin, who also has a boxer, is bringing
her female to the classes as well.  Carl, the trainer, recommended getting a Gentle Leader for her as she
tends to pull alot on the leash.  Especially when she wants to play!  =)  Although she is just a little thing,
boy is she strong!
She is VERY smart and willing to please, so I am sure she will do just fine with obedience.  The only
bad habit she has started at home, is to visit the kitty room for some "tootsie rolls".  Ewww!!  I am
putting a gate up so the kitties can go in but she can't.  =)
We are very happy to have Pelle in our family.  I can't wait for all the snow to melt so we can start
going on some walks!

UPDATE 3/12/08 - Hello! My family & I adopted Pelle (sounds like Pella) at the end of January. She
is such a sweetie!
How someone could have thrown this sweet girl (or any animal for that matter) out of a truck and just
left her on the side of a busy road is beyond me! She is a wonderful girl who obviously has had some
training.
She knows sit, shake, down, etc. There is no need to even raise your voice with her. She listens very
well. We are working on her crate training. She really doesn't like to be crated and barks & barks
when we have to crate her. Fortunately, this isn't very often as my husband and I work different shifts!
Unfortunately, she has had two trips to the vet's so far! The first trip was because she had an allergic
reaction. We had only had her for about two weeks. I gave her a bone filled with peanut butter and the
next morning she woke up with her eyes swollen and she looked like a prized fighter! I wish I had
thought to take a picture for her scrapbook. I brought her right in to our vet and they gave her a couple
of shots and had me start her on Benedryl. She was pretty much cleared up by the afternoon, thank
goodness! They can't be sure if it was the peanut butter or some type of bite. Therefore, no more
peanut butter for Pelle!
The second visit was because I was petting her and felt a sharp object under her skin on her shoulder.
She has a long scar on her left shoulder that we don't know how she got before coming into rescue. I
thought maybe the sharp object was a sliver of metal or something. I brought her in to the vet's and they
removed.... a porcupine quill! Who knows what this poor girl has gone through!
We are starting obedience training on Sat. the 22nd. My cousin has a young female boxer who will be
attending at the same time. =) I am sure Pelle will do fine as she is a smart cookie.
I have created an album named Pelle and added some pictures.
A great big thank you to SCBR and all of the volunteers that find homes for these wonderful dogs! We
are very happy to have Pelle in our family!

UPDATE 2/24/08 -  Pelle is doing wonderful!  She is such a sweet girl and we are so glad she is now a
part of our family.  As I type this she is laying beside me snoozing!
Everyone who meets her absolutely loves her.  I have a friend whose younger children are somewhat
afraid of dogs.  They met Pelle and warmed up to her immediately.  They can't wait to come back and
play with her!
She gets along well with all of our other animals.  One of our cats doesn't care for her but Pelle is a lady
and doesn't bother her at all.  Even when Isis tries to provoke her!  She wants to play with our Mastiffs
but they don't really like to play.  She will bounce around and bark at them and they look at her like she
is crazy!  LOL
I don't think she got played with much before she entered rescue.  We have given her several types of
toys and she doesn't really know what to do with them.  She is slowly beginning to play with her stuffed
bunny that squeaks and we are teaching her how to chase a tennis ball.
She loves to go for rides and has taken many trips with my husband when he goes out plowing.  She
jumps around in circles when we ask her if she wants to go for a ride.  It is quite comical!
Unfortunately, Pelle has taken two trips to the vet so far!  Fortunately, both were not serious!  The first
one was due to an allergic reaction - her eyes swelled up and she looked like a prize fighter!  We are
not sure what happened - the only thing we did different was give her a bone filled with peanut butter.
The vet had never heard of a dog having an allergy to PB before and said it could also have been some
type of insect bite.  Since we can't be sure we are playing it safe and not giving her peanut butter
anymore.  The second trip was because I could feel something sharp stuck just under her skin.  It was
located near where she has a long scar so I thought it might be a sliver of metal or something.  Come to
find out - it was a porcupine quill!  Who knows what this poor girl has been through!
We are working on her separation anxiety.  I have bought two great books by Nicholas Dodman which
I highly recommend to anyone who has dogs!  They are:  The Dog Who Loved Too Much and Dogs
Behaving Badly: An A-Z Guide to Understanding and Curing Behavioral Problems in Dogs.  We will
also begin obedience training next month when a new session starts.  I am sure she will do great as she
is quite a smart girl!
We are so glad she made it into rescue and we were able to give her the home she very much deserves
thanks to SCBR!

1/23/08 - Pelle has been adopted!

1/21/08 - Pelle went on a little visit to Aunt Julie's yesterday to spend sometime with the resident cat. In
the beginning she was curious but then was perfectly fine with the cat. Pelle could easily live with a cat
without issue. She is such a good girl. If you have a home where she can be with you most of the time
she will be most happy.

1/17/08 - Pelle has been here for a bit and we are getting to know her well. She is an incredible dog.
Pelle has taken sometime to warm up to the other dogs. I don't think she has been around many dogs
and they make her a little nervous. She gets along great with my big mastiff. I think a submissive dog or
two would be ok with her. Pelle is incredible well behaved in the house, she is housebroken, doesn't get
on the furniture, loves dog beds. Eats well with no food issues, takes treats easily. She loves kids and
meets everyone with her tail going 100 miles an hour. Pelle does not like her crate but does stay in it.
She drools a bit but settles down when she knows I will not let her out. Pelle loves to ride in the car and
go anywhere you go. She is a little bit of a velcro dog. She is fine off leash and minds when you call her
just once. Pelle knows sit, down, stay and paw. She will do anything to please you. Pelle has been spay
is up to date on all her shots and one healthy 50 pound muscle of a dog. Pelle deserves a home where
she will be queen bee. She is so easy to have, that I don't even know she is here most of the time. She
has been around kids, young to old without issues. My teenage daughter thinks she is a pain because
she always wants attention. But if you tell her to go lay down she will. Pelle will bark at the door but
stops when you let her know it is ok. This girl is a true find. I think she would do best if she doesn't
have to be home alone all day. Not much more to say about this perfect girl.

1/6/08 - We picked Pella up today at a local shelter. A young boy saw a pickup truck pull up in front of
the shelter road and throw her out and drive off. She followed the young boy and his dog. After no one
came to claim her the shelter called us. So far she is a sweet dog. As soon as we get to know her we
will update everyone. She is a cutie.
