NITRO
UPDATE 3/29/09 - Just a quick note to let you know that today Nitro, who previously had serious dog
aggression issues, passed his AKC Canine Good Citizen test (CGC) with flying colors.  Things started
out a bit rocky when he was approached by a lab puppy right when he entered the testing room, but his
training paid off and Nitro showed no aggression and never broke from his sit.  After that, the test itself
was easy!
Adopting a 'reactive' or dog aggressive dog is a commitment, but with proper training it can be
overcome.  It's not for everyone, but now Nitro is doing great and we couldn't be happier with him.
Thanks Second Chance Boxer and thanks to his great trainers Julia and Rick at Fortunate K9 in Derry
NH!

UPDATE 9/30/08 - Nitro is doing great.  We knew when we adopted him that he had some dog
aggression issues (enough that he'd been returned to rescue by his previous adoptive family).  Within
one week of his coming to live with us we immediately got him into obedience lessons with fantastic
trainers in Derry NH (Fortunate K9) and they worked miracles with him.   He has learned to walk on a
leash without pulling and now loves his daily walks.  He's even learned to ignore other dogs when we
pass them.  Most amazing is that he made a doggie friend. . .  Something we would never have believe
possible 3 months ago!
Over the summer he's become an integral member of our household and never leaves our side for more
than a few minutes.  He loves to play out in the yard, but if my husband or I come inside for even a
minute he's standing at the door, tail wagging, looking for us.  Our trainer actually had a hard time
teaching us a proper recall, because it's hard to get him to go far enough away from us to need to be
recalled!
In the house he's a perfect gentleman.  He never hogs the couch or begs at the table (though he isn't
above giving you the sad eye's if you happen to be eating chicken, his very favorite treat!)  The only
problem we have with him now is that he thinks he's a lap dog and at 60 lbs that can get a bit
uncomfortable.
We couldn't be happier with Nitro in our home.  And if his issues with other dogs continue to improve
maybe someday soon he can have a brother or sister come join the family.  But for now we're just
thrilled to have him.  He's a terrific dog who truly deserved a second chance.

6/28/08 - Nitro has been adopted!

6/17/08 - Nitro is coming back to rescue tonight as it was found out quickly that he just is not cut out to
be a city dog.  He went to a great home without other dogs, but the closeness of all the dogs in the city
neighborhood stressed him out too much that he was always on-guard and overly tense.  His new home
said he was such a great boy in the house with them, just outside the house he acted completely
different.  Nitro did not handle this stress well.  They are very sad to bring him back as they already fell
in love with him.  :(

We now know more of what type of a home Nitro needs: a home in a more country-style setting &
where there are not a lot of dogs for him to worry about.  Right now Nitro also gets over-stimulated
when playing, so we would not place him with kids under 12.  Do you have the right home for Nitro?
He's ready to bounce his way into your heart and home too.

6/14/08 - Nitro was adopted this morning!

5/26/08 - Nitro is doing very well and is a great boy.  He sure LOVES to bounce!  When he goes
outside and he is ready to come in, he will rev himself up and wiggle his whole body, smile ear to ear &
BOUNCE straight up, wiggling the whole time, with his ears flapping!  It's the funniest thing to see and
I've been trying to catch it on video, but it's hard to do.  I have to try to keep him more calm due to the
heartworm treatment he is under, which is hard for a boxer who thinks he is TIGGER! LOL

Since he has to be crated a lot for his treatment, Nitro goes with me for car rides when I do errands, he
likes riding.  I have figured out that he is not going to be good for a home with cats though and he still is
not accepting my two boxers.  At this point I would say he needs to also be an only dog, but the good
thing is he can be near or around other dogs in a neighborhood without going crazy.  He just will not be
your doggie daycare/dog park/big city type of a dog.

5/20/08 - Nitro was a stray to a shelter we work with.  Thank you to all of his very dedicated transport
volunteers that drove extra this past Saturday to get him safely to his foster home!  He is very grateful!

Nitro is about 4 years old and is up to date on his shots, but was found to have heartworm.  The shelter
treated him for that at the end of last month, so now he needs to spend a lot of time with crate rest
through the end of this month.  That way the worms do not lodge into his lungs or his bloodstream.
Nitro will be able to be neutered early June, then he should be ready to go home.

I am still getting to know him, but so far he is nothing but sweet & funny, goofy with me.  He has not
been too thrilled about meeting my two boxers or my cat yet, but he needs some time to relax before I
can say for sure how he is with them.  More updates soon on this sweetie!
