UPDATE 8/14/08 - Niko is wonderful!! His ulcer in his eye has finally healed(vets visits every two
weeks).Niko loves the vet but financially I am pleased . there is something about Boxers-all my dogs
have been very happy to visit the vet.
He has gained 12 lbs. at this point I will try to be a bit careful that he does not gain too much.
Every day he is a bit more relaxed and is showing more spirit. When I come home he is so overjoyed
and wants to play"tug of war"-would never know how old he is.This poor dog has been horribly abused
and each day it is more evident as he gradually feels secure. He has been terrified to ride in the car but
that is improving too.
Niko is such good company-again thanks to everyone who made Nikos adoption possible.
UPDATE 6/23/08 - Another update-Niko and I drove down to Latham, N. Y..from Vermont on
Sunday for a 9:30A.M. appointment with the optomologist on Monday .Niko had his right eye
anesthistized and a grid Keratotomy done(loose tissue scraped away and then agrid pattern with a
needle done). He was wonderful through it all and is on one oral med and four eye gtts. four times a
day- revisit in one week. This poor guy has been through so much and he is so very good.I just want to
make his life as comfortable as possible-my family all feel the same way.the vet bills are astronomical-so
far I have spent $971.00 in such a short time!! just hope the bills slow down soon-I'm 81 and on a
fixed income but will do anything for Niko.
UPDATE 6/12/08 - Niko's adjustment has been like a dream. He knows his yard and the path to the
lake like an old tropper. I have him on the same diet that Allison had him on and he is gaining
weight-now up to 58.5 lbs.-from 49.5 !He is so relaxed these days(except when he can't see me)that
without increasing his diet -he is gaining.
On his first trip to my vet an ulcer was discovered on his L eye. We have been to the vets every two
weeks, eye gtts. twice a day,two weeks ago the ulcer was debrided-Niko was so good-the ulcer has
now filled in but the inflamation has spread. My vet has suggested we see an Ophthamoligest in
Latham,N.Y.We have an appointment for june 23-my son lives near there so it is easier for me than
going into Mass.where the other specialist is located. Niko is fine otherwise.
He is at my side constantly and is so much calmer now that I shall try him in the canoe with me as soon
as he gets a life jacket. My other boxers loved going out on the lake.niko is the perfect match for
me-thank you to everyone who helped get us together-he is wonderful.
4/13/08 - Niko has been adopted!
1/29/08 - I am the very, very lucky foster mom to Niko or "Uncle Niko" as he is affectionately referred
to at home. He is doing great! Nothing too much has changed, he is still a joy to have in the house. I
have been feeding him three times a day to try to plump him up, but he hasn't gained as much as I had
hoped. His hips are less prominent, however his back is a little bony still.
We go for walks as the weather permits...wearing a doggy sweater when it's chilly-He's too cute!!
Niko
for some reason does not stop & sniff (&pee!) on trees, fire hydrants, etc. I do not know why & I
don't mind!!
At night, he will hang out in my bedroom where the other dogs have beds. However, he eventually
retires
to a bed in the living room - he likes his quiet time.
I believe that Niko would be very, very happy as an only dog or as a member of an easy-going pack.
One of
my dogs is a little aggressive/dominant and he tolerates her okay, however you can tell that he enjoys a
more low-key atmosphere. I have no concerns with him. He is very loving and happy, an all around
EASY dog.
12/27/07 - Niko was neutered and updated on his vaccinations a week ago. One of his testicles was
2x the size of the other. The vet said that it looked fine and didn't even suggest a biopsy (imagine that!
$$$). Well whatever was in there, he came back home feeling like a new dog. He is super active,
happy & playful. It is so nice to see him springing back to life. Hopefully the tapeworms are all gone
and he can start gaining weight now. He still needs to fill out a bit.
I love walking Niko. He is such a good boy walking next to me. He doesn't pull and if he gets ahead,
he will continually look back to make sure I am still there! It's nice because I can actually stick my
gloved hand in my pocket to keep warm...unlike walking my other dogs who constantly try to pull.
Niko is well behaved in the house. He has only had accidents when I came home and didn't
immediately let him outside. He drinks a lot of water, but bloodwork came back A-OK as far as
kidney & liver function. He can be left uncrated no problem, he is not destructive at all.
I can't say enough about this sweet little dog. He gets along great with my dogs and I'm sure a cat
would be no problem. He gives sweet little boxer kisses and is in a constant state of wiggles! He is a
pure delight to foster and will make a best buddy for some lucky person or people.
12/2/07 - I'd like to introduce my new foster kid "Niko". I named him Niko after Saint Nicolas as it is a
"christmas miracle" to have this little boy off the streets, out of the shelter and into my home.
Jill called me yesterday to say that there was a stray boxer boy at the local animal shelter that needed to
get out ASAP. He's a mature boy, skinny and was starting to develop kennel cough. His time at the
shelter was waning. Luckily I go to the shelter some Saturdays to walk a couple pups and happend to
be going today.
Niko had some nasty flea "dirt", so we gave him a flea bath before he left. He was very alert and
anxious on
the car ride home. Once we got home, he met my dogs (male boxer, female boxer & mutt
extraordinaire) and
loved every one of them. He seems to be a very sweet and laid back guy. He listens well and settles
down
in his crate after some whining. He is laying in there with the door open now as I am typing.
His age is unknown...we are guessing 7 based on his salt& pepper muzzle and teeth. His teeth are
actually
quite nice&clean. He definately needs to plump up a bit. He is a little "lumpy & bumpy" so I will
definately check those out when he goes to the vet for a pre-neuter check-up & vaccination update.
Niko is a very sweet, mature boxer who will make a wonderful addition to someone's family. What a
happy
ending it will be to see him off to his forever family that will give him the love he deserves that he
apparently stopped recieving some time ago.
