NIGEL
(boxer/mastiff? mix)
NOTE ** Because I am still a baby, I will only be placed in a home where someone is home often, such as
retired, work at home, work opposite shifts, stay at home parents, etc.

UPDATE 4/14/11 - It's been a long time since I wrote about Nigel.  He's really a wonderful part of our
family.  We recently adopted a yellow lab from a horrible situation.  She had only been out of a garage
maybe an hour a day.  She was 6 months old and didn't know anything.  She had never been in a house and
was afraid of everything.  Nigel, who is the calmest most confident dog in the world, took this dog under his
wing and really helped her become a real dog.  Now Daisy, the lab, after 6 months is a real dog.  Nigel did
more to help her than we would have been able to.  He looks out for her and encourages her to do things
that she is afraid of.  It's really hard to put into words how much we love and enjoy Nigel.  He is very
adaptable to new situations.  Thank you SCBR.

UPDATE 12/8/09 - Nigel has been with us for a year now.  He still goes for walks with us everyday -
usually twice a day.  He's very well behaved most of the time.   He's still just a bit timid.  He'll never be
completely confident in every situation, but he's got us to protect him.  After my husband and I, Nigel's
favorites are the cat (feelings not always returned) and our grandson, Bradley.  He's so gentle.  He's getting
very, very good about not rushing the door and jumping all over people.  If we can make him understand
what we want, he's always happy to comply.  We went to Disney World recently and hired a dog sitter to
stay at our house with our pets.  She fell in love with Nigel.  He just has the best personality.  He's very low
key and calm.  Some things scare him, but he doesn't have a drop of aggressiveness in him.  He's wonderful
around other dogs and usually just ignores strange dogs when we walk.  There is not one bad thing I could
say about Nigel.  He's a good dog and a wonderful companion.  We're very happy with him and I know he
loves us to death.   Thank you SCBR.

UPDATE 2/28/09 - Today, Nigel graduated from Delightful Dawgs 101. He got a special citation for
Politeness (not jumping up on people) and one for Perfect Attendance.  His next step is Delightful Dawgs
102 and then on to Rally Obedience.  We enjoy these classes and all the nice dog people we are meeting.
He still attends two play dates a week at the Magic Touch Behavior Center.  He gets so excited when we
turn into the parking lot.  He actually quivers until it's time to take his leash off and let him loose.  For one
hour he runs with about 12-15 other dogs until his tongue is hanging out.  I love seeing him like that.  He
checks in with us every once in a while as he runs by, and you can just see how free and happy he feels.
Nigel isn't perfect (and I have the chewed up wallet and boots and various other things to prove it), but he's
close enough for us.  He's likes to ride in the car, play in the back yard, go for walks and sleep on the
couch.  What more can you ask from a dog.  He's very strong and healthy.  I could go on and on.  We just
feel lucky that we found the right dog for us.

UPDATE 2/10/09 - Nigel is the perfect dog for our family.  It was love at first sight from the beginning
(except, of course, for our poor cat Willy).  Nigel was checked out by our vet, who was impressed by his
condition and temperament.  He's the star of his obedience class and is often used by the teacher as an
example.  (It's comparable to one of your kids making the honor roll.)  To socialize him, we take him to run
with other dogs at "Bouncy Bow Wows" two days a week.  The first time we took him, I was so nervous
and over protective that it didn't go well.  My husband convinced me to try again.  This time Nigel ran with
the other dogs until his tongue was hanging out.  He loved it.
Around the house, Nigel is sweet and affectionate.  He loves his toys and marrow bones.  He runs and leaps
and plays in the back yard.  He is very good with the grandchildren.  When they get to be too much, he goes
in his crate. For such a young dog, he is very calm.  In fact, oddly enough, he has not as yet ever barked.
He's the quietest dog I've ever known.  He adores my husband and I.  He's so affectionate.  We really love
him.  Walking him is a real pleasure.  He's very good on the leash and he walks with his head up high and
with a prance.
It's still incredible to me that we saw a picture on line, took a chance and were lucky enough to find the right
dog for us and the right home for Nigel.  The three of us are very happy together (except for poor Willy).

UPDATE 2/9/09 - Nigel has really become part of our family!  He continues to do well and has gained
some much needed weight.  He is an amazing, beautiful dog.
He just loves our grandchildren and has as much energy as they do so they give each other a great workout!
We are signing Nigel up for obedience training in March and can't wait to get started.

UPDATE 1/13/09 - Nigel is doing great and so are we.  Our vet checked him out and said he's a strong,
healthy dog with a great temperament.  We had him microchipped.  He behaved beautifully at the vet's
office.
Nigel LOVES my husband.  He doesn't take a step in the house without Nigel right by his side.  Nigel
always looks right into our eyes to try to understand what we want.  He starts his obedience training
Saturday.  I think he is going to do very well.
Other than an issue between him and our cat (which is getting a little better every day) he is the perfect dog
for us.  We walk him twice a day and he is a champ on the leash.  He walks with his head up, ignores others
dogs and just trots along as happy as can be.
Our 3 1/2 year old grandson likes to play fetch with Nigel.  He tells the dog "leave it" and sure enough he
drops the toy right at his feet.  I think that is impressive for Nigel to obey a small child.
For a young dog only 6 or 7 months old, he is very calm and sweet and gentle.  He bonded with us almost
immediately.  I think he really wanted his own people all to himself.  It's funny how things work out
sometimes.  I looked online for months before we decided on Nigel.  We didn't even apply for any other
dog - we knew just from his picture and from the narrative from his foster mother that he was the dog for us.
I'll let you know how his training goes.  This Saturday all of the dogs in the group will be introduced for the
first time.  They told us not to expect too much at the first class.  We're looking forward to it.  Sounds like
fun.

UPDATE 12/28/08 - First I would like to thank Nigel's foster mother, Jill, for taking such good care of
Nigel.  He has a beautiful healthy coat, clear eyes and a calm demeanor.  He is really a wonderful puppy.
He's going to the vet on Tuesday, but it's really only for an introduction.  This little guy is healthy.
With all the excitement of the holidays, Nigel has had a couple of accidents but I think it's mostly because
he's so quiet.  I have to watch to see if he wants to do out because he rarely barks.
We have a couple of issues between him and our cat, but they are equally at fault, and they are just going to
have to work them out.
Nigel is a great walker.  We've been walking him 3 times a day and it's a real pleasure.  He walks with his
head held high and his tail up.  He looks very cool.  We've gotten several compliments.  He barely notices
other dogs.
In the house he likes to play but is mostly very gentle and quiet.  His favorite thing so far is to chase a ball.
He's pretty good about bringing it back and dropping it.
His obedience training starts January 4th, so more about that later.
Thank you to all of you at Second Chance Boxer Rescue.  This sweet dog deserved a chance.   We love
him.  He's already a wonderful companion.

12/20/08 - Nigel has been adopted!

8/12/08 - We went to a volleyball and I was very afraid.  A friend picked Nigel up and he was shaking!
Once in my arms Nigel was content as could be.  He had a grand old time following me around and would
NOT leave my side.  This is little guy is very laid back and just looking to be cuddled and loved!  We are
working on the leash training....he is a bit afraid of it.  We are also working on the housebreaking as well!
The crate seems to be working well and he usually just goes in and sits or lays down.  If you are looking for
a very "gentle - loving" guy then Nigel is the man for you!  Won't you consider this little guy to bring home
and love forever?

7/28/08 - The Finding Nemo Crew arrived earlier today from Ohio. According to their paperwork they
were surrendered to the shelter on 6/26/08 at 4 weeks old. That would make them 8 weeks old now. They
have been vaccinated (puppy vaccines and kennel cough) and dewormed several times already. The pups
are pretty big for their age. Not necessarily very tall but short, squatty, solid little babies! They look like they
have some mastiff in their heritage (both their builds and coloring). Some of the smaller pups resemble labs.
Maybe Dad was a Mastiff/Lab mix? Guess we will never know! What I do know is they are fat, friendly
and CUTE as can be. Pictures will be coming very soon. You better gets those applications in as they pretty
babies won't be around long!
