LOLA
UPDATE 1/2/10 - Sorry for the delay in our updates - after this one I will get back on our correct
schedule for Lola updates! Lola is doing very well with my husband and I - she is part of the family and
much more to us than just a dog! Since our last update, we completed obedience school with flying
colors. She loves to please and is always eager to learn new tricks. The next trick we teach her will be
to put away her toys! She loves going through her toybox and pulling out all of her favorites. The
second we put them away, she goes back to get them. She loves people and is always thrilled to have
visitors. She is often slow to warm up to men, but she eventually does. She continues to be
unpredictable with other dogs - I wouldn't necessarily call her aggressive, just unpredictable. We don't
have a lot of opportunities to socialize with other dogs, and I am cautious with how we interact. Usually
she is fine, but it's hard to judge how she will react. We attempted the dog park, and although she did
okay, I don't think it's a good idea to continue. I know there are pros and cons to the dog park, and I
just don't feel entirely comfortable there. When we come across other dogs on walks, she barks at
them unless we let her sniff the other dog or until we correct her and move on. She has a very throaty
bark that makes it sound like she is growling, which understandably makes other dog owners nervous.
When we've had dogs come to visit, she is generally fine. We've learned to meet on neutral territory,
hide her bones and feed seperately, and then mostly she just wants to play. However, she has still
occasionally snapped at the other dog seemingly without provocation. So, it is something we continue to
work on. The main thing is that she is a princess and she knows it, and she wants all of our attention! As
I type on my laptop, she is sitting in between my husband and I on the sofa, with her head on my lap
snoring away. We look forward to having her with us for a long time to come!

UPDATE 7/29/08 - Hello all.  We hope this update finds all of you enjoying your summer! It’s been a
few months now since Lola became part of our family, and we continue to learn and grow together.
Lola is an absolute delight, and surprises us almost daily with the things she knows and how quickly she
learns.
We are still tuning Lola’s diet.  We came to an educated conclusion that she does not react well to fish
or fish bi-products.  We have since limited her diet to food (Canidae) that does not have any fish or fish-
based filler in it, the result being positive effects on her itching and better consistency to her stool.  We
also found out that while she LOVES people food, it does not agree with her.  It takes a tremendous
effort to resist that adorable boxer face, so we do our best to make Lola’s dinner time coincide with
our dinner time.
While we are not new to having dogs, we are quite new to obedience training/practice.  There is a lot
going on at training, much more than we anticipated.  We expected a few Sundays worth of “Sit-Stay”
training, but what we are getting is an enlightening experience teaching us how to properly communicate
with our Lola.  We are new to the training, but apparently our Lola is old hat at it.  She learns so
quickly! She still has some trouble with not barking at the other dogs in class, but she improved greatly
week or week. She has now graduated from her initial class and we are considering doing a more
advanced class.
Over the past month, Lola came camping with us for a weekend and also got to help host a bridal
shower. She was great camping. She barked a bit as people walked by, but she calmed right down at
night and happily slept in the tent (on the air mattress) with us without a peep! She was quite exhausted
by the time we got home - I’m sure it wasn’t easy keeping her vigilance and making sure everyone
walking by knew she was there. She was also great at the bridal shower – staying out of the way and
helping to greet guests without jumping. She gave everyone a sniff and made sure they brought a good
present and then went back to making sure I was doing okay in the kitchen and didn’t need her help
cleaning up any spills.
Until next month!

UPDATE 6/17/08 -   Lola is doing very well. She had her first vet appointment with us, first big party,
and first obedience class and all went well!
First - the vet. She did pretty well although she was definitely nervous being around all the other
animals. She barked a bit in the waiting room and just wasn't herself. Because she had never gotten the
second round of some of her vaccines according to her vet records, she had to get a few of them again.
They also wanted to check her for heartworm again because we were not sure if she had been on
heartworm medication while in foster care. One not so surprising thing the vet said is that there is no
way Lola is 5 - he said she is no more than 2. We were pleasantly surprised by that - we want her to
have as long a life with us as possible! I know her foster mom said she acted younger and we definitely
agreed - she has so much energy! I would assume most boxers start to quiet down around 5, and she is
definitely not there! Her first vet exam records also said she was 1 - 2. So, does anyone know where
the birthday listed for her comes from?? I'd be very interested to know.
We had a big party with over 50 people at our home last weekend. I was worried about Lola being
over excited and jumping on all the guests, but she was so well-behaved! She had a blast playing
outside with all the kids. She played left field in softball (although she took the ball and ran instead of
trying to get anyone out) and defense in soccer (for both teams). The kids did get a little annoyed with
her for always getting any of the balls they dropped, but I told them it should teach them not to drop the
ball :-)
Obedience school is going well although she is having trouble focusing. She listens to the commands and
all, but she just can not get the exercises where she is supposed to look at me. She is VERY nervous
around all the dogs and did a lot of barking. We are working on getting her better socialized and plan to
find a place at the local dog park where she can sit at a safe distance from the other dogs and just
watch. She did get a very nice compliment from the instructor at school regarding her stance - she said
it was a perfect stack and asked if she'd ever been shown. I had to admit I had no idea!
Overall, so far so good! Again, if anyone has any information about her age / birthday I'd really
appreciate it!

UPDATE 5/9/08 -  Hello! We became Lola's humans on April 25 and she has been a wonderful
addition to our family. She loves to cuddle whenever and wherever, and she loves to play tug of war
and fetch. She has a blast running around outside chasing after her toys. She had been pulling a lot on
her leash when we go for walks, so we are trying a gentle leader training collar with her. It has made
such a big difference! We have taken many long walks around the neighborhood and she's just been
amazing. We're still not sure if she has a bit of dog aggression, but with the gentle leader I don't have to
worry about meeting other dogs. We took her to Petco one day to pick out a new toy, and she barked
at a small poodle, and she has barked at other dogs she sees while we're walking (pre-gentle leader),
but there haven't been any incidents. Once she is more settled we'll focus on introducing her to other
dogs to see how she does.
She is itching a lot but isn't suffering from any hair loss. She has a vet appt next week so we'll get that
checked out.
We are so happy to have her with us! Just as we've adopted her, she's adopted our bed and couch for
her own. She always makes room for us though!
I'll add another update next month.

4/25/08 - Lola has been adopted!

4/19/08 - Lola and I had a great day doing errands.  She has wonderful car manners and will love to go
on rides with you.  I told her once to stay in the back seat and she sat or laid down the whole time.
Never once trying to get in the front.  She waited for me while I was in the stores.  I did have people
walk by the car and there was no barking.  One of the stops was a feeding store that has some
wonderful dog biscuits so Lola came home with a great treat which she enjoyed the rest of the
afternoon.

4/18/08 - Lola is a flashy brindle girl who's picture does not do her justice, but hopefully soon will get
some updated pictures of her.  She has started to feel comfortable here and I am seeing a sweet
personality.  Living in a condo I walk Lola  three times a day and although she pulls a little on the leash
if you call her she come right back to you.  Last night was the first time we ran into another dog and she
started to go towards the dog but there was no barking or growling and calling her back to me she
came.  She would like to meet people on our walks but is okay when I tell her "no visit" and she
continues on our walk without a fuss.  Yesterday I ran an errand for about an hour and let Lola loose in
the house to see how she did and the only thing I found when I came home was the curtain moved so
she could get to the window.  This weekend we are going to check out her car manners.  This girl will
bring much joy to you and your family.

4/15/08 - Lola arrived last night and if first impressions are the best then I have to say she is the
sweetest girl I have had in a long time.  I sat her down today to get her wish list and this is what she
asked for:  Please find me a family that would be satisfied with just loving me as I am a princess and
want all your attention.    Will feed and exercise me each day.  Will love me even when I am old and
failing.   She told me you will not regret loving her as she will give back  just as much if not more.  She is
wonderful around all ages and has an uncanny way of being around toddlers and not knocking them
down.  She is so gentle.  Does not jump a lot, and when she does it is again very gentle  Loves to play
with her toys and loves to be outside.  I think she knows the English language.  I told her once off the
couch and showed her her bed. Since then that is where is goes.  She takes to crate during the day
without a fuss and slept by my bed last night without a peep.  She stepped right into my routine without
a hitch.  As I am sure she will step into your life and family with the same ease.  Please consider this
beautiful girl if you are a one dog family.

4/14/08 - Poor Lola is coming back already to find a different home.  She had a fight with the little dog
in the house.  More updates soon from her new foster home.

4/12/08 - Miss Lola Smith is on her way to CT to her now home. She will have 3 kids to keep track of
as well as Mr. and Mrs.   A dream come true for a dog! I am told that she has a new crate, some new
toys and of course a scheduled vet visit and obedience training to come. I hope she is a good girl for
them and adapts well.

3/30/08 - My family room is sort of high. Normally I get the 8 foot step ladder in 3 or 4 times a year
and do a really good dusting of the fan, beams and lights. Right now the stepladder is still outside
hanging over a few feet of snow and it isn't worth it to wade to it to bring it in. Soooo, to dust the
beams and try to control a few strands of cobwebs, I use the long handled duster. You know the type,
it has that fluffy yellow stuff in a big puff at the end of the extension pole. Lola had been napping and
woke up to me reaching for the dust! Her
first reaction is to try to get that fluffy thing in her mouth! Not a chance! She can't jump that high, but
she does try. She is so intense that she made Sam nervous and he was about to settle her down. A
couple of words from me and he backed off but Lola still wanted the duster. Lola needs a home of her
own where she can have her very own duster to chase. She was so funny just trying to get that "thing"!

3/18/08 - I have got to tell you, this girl has the greatest recall!  The first time I ever called her she was
trotting away from me.  I called in a normal conversational tone and she skidded to a stop and turned
and
came right back to me.  I couldn't believe it! I have tested her under a number of conditions, and she is
great!  She can be running and playing, and all I have to do is say "Lola" and she comes right to me.  I
haven't tried to call her when she is squirrel hunting.  That is next.

3/17/08 - I have to tell the story of the "girls" and the woodpile. The woodpile was originally a very
neat, well covered pile of stacked wood. Then came Sandy! She has a thing for squirrels! She would
spend all of at least a half hour trying to get a squirrel. She would sit under a tree and howl at the
squirrels she could see!! LOL!
One day a squirrel was spotted going up under the tarp on the woodpile and Sandy was quite anxious
that it should go no further. It got away!  She was devastated! But, being a boxer, she was not
deterred. Every
time she went outside she had to check the woodpile.

Lola doesn't really care for squirrels any more than Sandy. She figured that something was going on, so
when her turn came to go outside, she found the woodpile to be quite interesting. Later, watching from
the window, she spotted a squirrel. Out the dog-door in a big rush!  Naturally the squirrel is going to go
to the nearest hiding place, and did: the woodpile! Dogs don't need dirt to dig, and Lola decided to dig
into the woodpile! Sandy also did a bit of digging. Now my woodpile isn't so neat any more, but I will
soon start using at least a part of it, in the next few days. They just thought they were helping! Squirrels,
6 / Dogs, 0.

3/7/08 - Lola loves to play with a toy all by herself. She also loves to help in the back yard when there
is something that needs doing, like filling bird feeders. She is pretty good company. Most of the time she
is
pretty good around the cats and my dogs, but it would still be a good idea for her to be either an only
dog or companion to a male dog. I do not suggest cats as she does like to exercise them a bit too
much. Did you notice her coat? She has a reddish tint to her brindle stripes and it is so soft and shiny!
This girl has been here way too long. All of her medical issues have been cleared up and she is ready
and willing to give your home lots of "Boxer Love"!

2/28/08 - Lola has now finished her Demodex Mange medication. The worst spot, which was on top of
her head, now has fur growing in very nicely. If you didn't know...... She has the shiniest coat and it is
very soft.  She is a bundle of energy and you would never know that she just turned 5 years old.

2/22/08 - Lola really surprised me today.  Her nails WERE quite long.  I called her to me, had her sit
and took her paw.  I then proceeded to trim her nails on her front feet.  No problem, no complaint, no
struggling, etc.  A very good girl.  Later I will check her back nails, which I don't think are nearly as
long. She has a broken nail on the front, but it doesn't appear to bother her.  I just wanted to equalize
all of them for comfort and,
naturally, looks. She is almost through with her Ivomectin treatment.  Her fur is growing back in the
affected spots.  No more Demodex for her! She loves to cuddle and snuggle with another dog, or
human.  She is so sweet if not too much is going on. Lola will be 5 years old on Monday!  Won't you
give her the best present
a dog could want-her very own castle to take care of?

2/13/08 - Lola is a lovely girl all by herself. She might be fine with just one other dog, but not three like
I have. Put her into a pack of dogs and it is just too much for her! She has become very unpredictable
with the other dogs and I don't like having to break up fights. We need peace!  Lola is very sweet, very
smart and will crawl right into your skin if you give her just half a chance.  She will finish her medication
for Lyme Disease this week and if you didn't know, you wouldn't know that she has had a bit of
Demodex mange.  She is still receiving medication for that. This little girl will turn 5 in a week or so.
How about giving her a nice birthday present like a home of her own?

1/26/08 - Lola arrived at the Log Cabin Saturday afternoon. She is a lovely dark brindle gal who has
had a number of homes. She objected to the crate the first time I crated her, but since has gone in
willingly and not had a problem. I don't think she needs to be crated. She could use a couple of pounds,
but not much more than that. She is being treated for Demodex and Lyme disease. Lola is beginning to
come out of her shell and played for nearly an hour all by herself with a "donut, air dog". The others just
watched her or napped. She will also play "tug" with another dog. There may be a small amount of food
aggression, or not. Still checking
on that. She and Rose had a minor scrap, but Rose didn't take any guff from her. Then Sam had a
quick turn a few hours later! However, this is a dictator household and I am the dictator! They all know
it!

I took a few pictures last night but haven't yet gotten them into the computer. Later today, I hope!
