UPDATE 3/13/08 - We have had Leon for 2 weeks now and he is adjusting very well. Our 6 month
old kitten is not thrilled with our new additon to say the least but as of now she has continued to be
affectionate and loving toward all the 2 legged family members. Leon as most of you know is a big
boxer boy (our kiiten)Noel is about the size of his head and she is understandably scared out of her
mind...she doesn't claw at him I don't think she knows yet that she has the ability to defend herself.
Noel has her space inthe house and Leon has his so far this has worked out out fine. Leon has no
aggression toward her he just wants to play and Noel wants nothing to do with this. We have had a few
difficulties with Leon as far as accidents inthe house. I came home one day to an awful smell and a wet
bed. I got the crate out and crated him for the next 2 days and so far no more accidents. Leon is fine
ona leash as long as you have the choker on him he has done so well with the choker that my 9 year old
who weighs all of 70 lbs can now take him for walks down our sidewalk on her own (I of course watch
like a hawk from the window.) We went to the vets this past Monday and our boy has ear infections
again...he is on meds for his ear infections and is doing very well. We have also started using (per the
vet) neosporan under his chin and on his chest where the collar he use to wear rubbed his skin off. I can
already see a big difference in the areas and Leon is much less itchy. I am so impressed with Leon so
far he shows no aggression toward anyone my sister's daughter is with us alot she is 4 and he is
excellent with her. He is a very verbal dog (something we are use to) and it is the funniest thing to watch
as Leon and my son (12 years old) play tug of war I am not sure who makes more noise but as soon as
you tell Leon to drop it and place a finger on his nose he does and sits until you tell him to play again.
Leon sleeps with either my son or daughter (depends on where Noel is for the night) he sleeps all night
and doesn't need to o out until about 10:00 am (weekends.) I have started looking into trainers who
train using a choker as I am not kidding Leon is like night and day once you have the leash on the
choker or grab the choker to correct him...you don't even need to correct him half the time the motion
of one of us reaching for the choker is enough for him to do what it is you are asking of him. Leon now
is made to sit before going out and is doing this on his own now with out being told (or a little clearing of
the throat as a reminder) he walks beside the person with the leash (on the left) as a choker trained dog
is supposed to do. All in all Leon is a wonderful additon to our family. This is the second time I have
adopted from S.C.B.R my first boy George adopted in 2000 who was a 97lb boxer and verbal went to
the rainbow bridge this past October he brought such joy to our lives. Once we saw Leon we knew he
was the one for us and once again S.C>B.R has proved that the methods that they use work to find
loving family for boxers who also need loving homes. We are all proud and over joyed to to have Leon
as an offical family member. Leon has found his forever home and we have found our new best friend.
To all the volunteers at S.C.B.R you made a huge difference to my family and I not once but now twice
the word thank you does not do any of you justice but I need to say it again THAK YOU...
3/1/08 - Leon had been adopted!
2/12/08 - Leon has settled back in with us and he's doing really good. He continues to do excellent with
the other dogs here. I have recently found out why Leon growls while he's playing. It's his way of
talking to you and saying I'm having a lot of fun. He isn't doing this to be aggressive. Leon loves to play
keep away with the other dogs. If another dog has a toy, Leon will go up and take it from them and run
to another room so they will chase him. Leon's favorite toy is the tennis ball. Here's one boxer that loves
to play fetch and he'll bring it back everytime. Leon isn't a very vocal guy. He only growls when he's
playing and barks at strangers that come near the house. Whenever people come over Leon doesn't get
overly excited and jump all over them. He just stands there and waits for them to say hi to him. Leon
has gotten a little better on the leash. He doesn't pull as much as he used too. He's learning that we are
the boss and he's not. More updates soon....
2/2/08 - Leon came back to us this past Sunday so he's had a few days to settle back in with us. Things
just were not working out for him in his new home. While at his new home Leon gained a few pounds
and looks really good. When Leon got back here we had to reintroduce him to our 2 dogs and our
other foster Jamison. The introductions went over really well. Leon and Jamison are wrestling buddies
and spend a lot of their waking hours doing this.
Leon looks small in his pictures, but he's not. He is all muscle and his head comes to my waist. Despite
Leon's intimidating size he is such a big baby. Leon loves to take walks but he's a little difficult on the
leash. He likes to take the lead and pull you down the street. We recently purchased a gentle leader to
see if this will help him not to pull.
We have noticed since Leon has been back that he has a new habit. When Leon gets overly excited
while playing he starts to growl at you. When we correct Leon for doing this he'll continue to growl. It
usually takes a few strong "No's" to get him to stop. More to follow shortly...
1/26/08 - Due to changes in their home situation, Leon has come back to rescue to find another home.
More updates soon from his foster home.
UPDATE 1/17/08 - Leon has settled in wonderfully in our home. I couldn't ask for a more well
behaved dog in the house. He is also great with my children who are 10 and 2. He really is putty in the
2 year olds' hands. He is very gentle with her!! Leon does have a stubborn streak but it seems through
implementing the techniques I have learned so far in dog training it has really made a difference. He
needs to be reminded that the humans are the bosses and not him! The only negative thing I have to say
about Leon is that he does not seem to get along well with other dogs. Even a dog that he had played
with twice before seemed to somehow provoke 2 big scruffs. I'm not sure what is going on with that
situation. But my dog, or I should say my people trainer is going to work on that with us.
12/15/07 - Leon has been adopted!
11/30/07 - Leon is one of the biggest boxers I have ever seen. I know he's a big boy but he's a little
skinny and could use another 5-10 lbs to fill out a little more. This shouldn't take long because he has a
very big appetite. Don't let his size fool you though because he is nothing but a big baby. Getting Leon
to sit can be quite a chore but he will give "paw" when asked. Even though he's a big dog he tries to sit
in my husband's lap all the time. Leon is great with younger kids and doesn't seem to care that there are
4 teenagers coming and going all the time. He likes to spend his time following my husband around the
house, sleeping (sometimes he sneaks on the couch), going for walks, having his ears rubbed (especially
behind his right ear), and playing tug-of-war. Whenever Leon shakes his head it sounds like a helicopter
starting up. Leon is housebroken and doesn't need to be in a crate while you're gone. We have an
appointment for Leon with the vet this coming Monday for a check-up and to schedule his neutering
(I'm sure my little Nikita can't wait for this). More updates to follow.......
11/26/07 - Some info from Leon's owner about his background: Leon is a big 4 year old fawn male
boxer boy. He is great with kids, cats and other dogs. He use to live with a female boxer and is also use
to and good with a small dog in the family. He lived with kids that are 4 & 6 and he was wonderful with
them. Leon was surrendered due to divorce and now not enough money or time for him. She says he
is a really nice dog.
