**NOTE: Due to my hearing impairment, I will need a home with a fence, another dog and someone that
is home more often (ex: at home parent, work at home, work opposite shifts, retired, etc)**
UPDATE 7/7/08 - Thought I would send this email off a week early while I was thinking about it and
sending out a copy of his obedience class. Things with Kodiak are going well, he has settled in nicely.
99.99% of the time he is getting along with our other dog Ruby, but we have found he gets very
teritorial with food and toys, as we have had a few minor fights. Also, he is very aggressive with other
male dominate dogs, which is a shame because we are scared to bring him to the dog park. If you have
any suggestions on how to slowly socialize him with other dogs that would be great.
UPDATE 5/13/08 - Quick update on Kodiak. All is going well, took 3 days for him to get situated
and acustomed to life with our dog Ruby, but they have quickly become best friends. His vet visit went
fairly well, he was still a little under weight (1 month ago), but he is looking good now and is up to
65-70 lbs. He did have coxidia though, which he was treated for. We have been surprised to find that
his hearing is very good,as we were told he was deaf. Although, even after a month we haven't quite
figured out exactly what he can hear. We are leaning towards "male selective hearing" as he hears the
faintest noises and then seems to ignore other louder noises? Obedience classes started two weeks
ago, going well, although he still needs some work on the leash, as he is very strong. All in all he has
been great, and has made himself right at home as part of our family. Thanks
4/12/08 - Kodiak has been adopted!
4/3/08 - Kodiak has been here almost 2 weeks and is doing great. I have found he hears some things,
but not everything, so I would say he is mostly deaf, but not 100%. He gets along great with my cat
and the other two boxer girls here. Kodiak was neutered yesterday and had his shots updated, so now
he can go to his new home. He is very strong on the leash and needs some work in that area. Kodiak
is a very sweet boy and loves to cuddle.
3/24/08 - Kodiak arrived on Friday evening thanks to his transport helpers! He is a big white boxer,
about 2 years old, that was a stray to a shelter we work with. I called him Kodiak as he is just a big
teddy bear! One big surprise I figured out when he arrived is that he is deaf. This means he will need a
home with a fenced yard and someone home more often.
Kodiak loves riding in the car with me doing errands and laying his big head on my shoulder as I drive.
So far he has been great in his big wire crate when I am not home and at bedtime. Since he is not
neutered yet, he does have a marking habit that I am working on breaking of in the house (harder to do
with a deaf dog!).
Luckily I have not seen any of the separation anxiety that comes along with many deaf dogs. He seems
content to go in his crate when needed. I will work on introducing him to my cat & boxer girl this week
and he should be neutered soon too.
