UPDATE 10/2/11 - Today is the 3 year anniversary that I adopted Joey :)
Yesterday was his 8th birthday.  We are going to celebrate today with a cupcake!
Joey has big plans for the next couple of weeks- although he doesn't know it yet.
We're going to Indiana for a visit, and then when we get back to VT, we're moving
into our new home-  I'm sure he will love the new deck!  Joey is doing well from a
health standpoint.  He had surgery last Friday to have a bump removed.
Thankfully it was benign.  He ended up with quite a few stitches though :(  And he
still takes his meds for arthritis.  But overall he's healthy as a horse.
I can't believe it's been 3 years-  I still laugh when I think about the day I picked
him up.  He was jumping straight up and down on the other side of the glass
door, watching me walk to the door.  My first impression was- wow, he's a really
big boxer!  And my second thought was-  I'm taking him home.  And I did.  It was
love at first sight, ha ha.  He sat like a human in the back seat facing forward as
still as a statue the whole ride home.  Anyway, here he is three years later, and as
far as I'm concerned, the best dog ever.

UPDATE 1/1/11 - Well, Joey is enjoying the new year...He celebrated with a pig
ear :)  Last week we took him snowshoeing.  It's funny because despite hating
the cold weather, he sure likes the snow.  As long as he has his jacket on.  I had
to work at the hospital on Christmas so he took a little vacation to CT to be with
my boyfriend's family for the holidays, which he always loves because he's the
center of attention the whole time.  He liked his Christmas presents too-  A new
bed and a new Rudolph squeaky. I've never met a dog who cries when you stop
petting him, but well, that's Joey... He's a sweet baby.  He's been here since
October 2008 and he's still doing great!

UPDATE 7/27/10 - Joey is still doing great!  His hips seem to bother him a little
more now, but he's still taking his meds and he gets around really well as long
as I don't let him over do it.  We went camping this past weekend and he loved it!
I think it's funny because I wouldn't really describe him as an outdoorsman.  He
really likes to lay by the campfire, and goes in the tent with no coaxing.  He tends
to be a little whiny sometimes and cried when it started to sprinkle.  Poor Joey.
He doesn't like to walk in wet grass either.  :)  He got a bath today (which he
doesn't like) but at least he smells good now.  He digs those paws into the floor
to avoid that tub at all costs!  He's silly :)

UPDATE 3/13/10 - Joey is lying at my feet as I write this :)  We went for a nice walk
this morning and he's pooped.  He's still taking his medication for hip dysplasia,
and we've got a good regimen that keeps his pain under control. I bought a dog
massage book that I'm reading to hopefully keep him comfortable and with
massage and good range of motion.  I worry that he will become really stiff as he
ages, but I'll do everything I can to keep him active.
On a lighter note, he's still his goofball self.  Last night I'm not sure what got into
him-  He saw a lady outside while we were walking and I think he thought he
knew her! (he didn't)  He kept staring and acting silly, jumping and wiggling his
nub. She came into the building with us.  I was trying to get him back to the
apartment without him pestering her too much, and because he was staring at
her and not watching where he was going, he ran into the wall and conked his
head.  What a goober!
My roommate really loves Joey, too.  Between the two of us, he's not alone too
often, and he gets plenty of hugs and kisses.

UPDATE 12/2/09 - Joey has a new friend from boxer rescue!  Roscoe was
adopted last month by my friend and they love to go to the park.  Joey has a little
bit of a harder time keeping up since he's a little older and I try not to let him get
too crazy because of his hips, but they have fun!  Joey is also sporting his new
Indiana University collar, and I must say he looks quite handsome in Cream and
Crimson : )  He's anxiously waiting to visit Santa in the mall...he's there every
Monday in December and takes pictures with pets.  He's also found a new spot to
sleep.  Apparently he loves Snuggies (and dirty laundry, and Aunt Alyssa's socks).
He's been here over a year and still doing well.  He's my spoiled little (or not so
little) guy!

UPDATE 9/22/09 - Joey is still doing great!  In the last year we've bonded so
well...He has completed obedience training and day school.  He is now on
medication twice a day for hip dysplasia.  He's made so many friends, and
everyone thinks he is the cutest guy in town.  Even my "non-dog-loving" friends
have fallen for him.  I just love him so much and I can't remember a time before
having him.

UPDATE 12/7/08 - Oh my!  Is Joey having a good time or what....We drove to
Indiana for Thanksgiving to visit my family and he is in HEAVEN.  Mom and Dad
have a boxer also, and between my brother's dog, my cousin's dog and all the
kids, I'm not sure he will want to leave later this week.  (My dad loves him and
keeps teasing that he wants to keep him)  He's been so good, and has adjusted
so well.  He's sleeping right now.  I think he's really tired from all the "mouth
wrestling" he's been doing with the other dogs.  They all get along so well!

UPDATE 11/2/08 - I've had Joey for a month and it's gone by so fast, yet it feels as
if he's always been here.  He's so sweet.  He has a new friend at the dog park...a
boxer puppy who looks exactly like him.  We've nicknamed the other pup
"Mini-Me"!  He loves everyone- two legs or four.
Joey is going to start obedience school on Wed this week. This boy is so
funny....he loves his new memory foam dog bed so much that in the morning I
have to drag him off of it to go outside.  (He doen't want to sleep in my bed
anymore!?) He doesn't like the cold, so he runs back to the house so he can
snuggle back in bed right away.  He is such a joy to have.

UPDATE 10/18/08 - Joey is doing great!  He's been with me for two weeks and he
has adjusted just fine.  He LOVES the dog park.  He's earned the nickname
"Steve Martin" because when he and his new best friend (my good friend's
aussie) get together, they are "two wild and crazy guys!"  He will be starting
obedience school soon, although he seems to have some training already.
Thanks SCBR for Joey.  He is the perfect match for me!

10/3/08 - Joey has been adopted!

9/25/08 - This is the update from the shelter where Joey was surrendered due to
his owner's were moving:

"I am very social and outgoing. I just love to have as much attention as possible. I
really enjoy the company of other dogs and cats and I like kids as well. Once we
meet I'm sure we'll hit it off. I never have a bad day and I can hardly wait to meet
you."

9/22/08 - Well, thanks to Terry, Karin, Dick, and Gayle, Joey got sprung from the
shelter and into my arms! We are still getting to know each other but he's been
WONDERFUL so far. He arrived yesterday afternoon and we spent most of the
day hanging out doing laundry and other household chores. He helped me every
chance he got!  So far he's definitely a velcro dog...follows me & my boyfriend
everywhere! We've already discovered that he knows quite a few commands, like
sit, lay down, paw, stay, and we're even working on roll-over and drop-it! I can't
imagine all the stuff this guy could learn with a few training sessions! He and his
forever home could have so much fun leaning new things together!!  Aside from
training, Joey seems to have no interest in my cats. They decided to do a little
snooping this morning and he sat on the couch, just as content as could be. Even
when one jumped up on the arm of the couch to get a closer look. Joey just gave
her an inquisitive head tilt and then turned to lay back down. So I think he and the
cats will be fine together. And on both of our walks we've met a couple other dogs,
which he wanted to get a closer look at but once I gave him a stern "NO" he did
his best to ignore the barking and continue his walk. He's good on a leash but
does tend to pull when he spots something. So we will be working on that.   I
haven't had a chance to dive into his paperwork yet, so his top box info will
becoming in the next day or so. But check out the pictures of this big lug...are you
his forever home?
