HONEYDEW
8/11/08 - Honeydew's foster mom has lots of news to report! Apparently the SCBR Website change-over
happened at the same time that I sent in an update, and it got "lost"--so here we go with all the "New"
information.

First of all, Honeydew had her birthday, so she is now 7 years old.  Maybe in years, but she keeps acting
younger!  When I come home (even if I've been gone only a short time) she is so excited and happy that she
bounces up in the air to say hello like she is a three year old.  And with the way my house is set up, and the
doggie door, she runs circles around the house up and down the stairs inside and out.  SO even though I
haven't been taking her for walks (because I am not feeling young!) she is getting plenty of exercise and has
slimmed down to a great weight for her.

Honeydew finally had enough time elapse since her heat cycle for it to be safe to spay her--so she is spayed!
No more puppies for this poor overbred momma--hooray!  She had had so many that there was alot of
uterine tissue, and that makes a spay more difficult and potentially more dangerous for  the dog.  But she did
great, and came home and recuperated.

But then she had another urinary tract infection so we went back to the vet and found out that she has a lot
of crystals in her urine, which are causing the ongoing infections (and probably causing her a lot of
discomfort, too).  SO Honeydew is on another round of antibiotics and is on a prescription diet--a special
kibble from Royal Canin that will prevent the formation of these crystals.

Now Honeydew has been on her prescription kibble for a week, and seems to be doing well.  When she
finishes this round of antibiotics we bring in another urine sample so that it can be re-checked--and hopefully
we will find that the prescription diet is working. She doesn't need any other medicines or treatments, and
she seems to like the food just fine so there shouldn't be any problem with continuing it.  She isn't supposed
to have any other foods (which would upset the nutrient balance), so a home that doesn't have little children
would probably make that easier.  As would no other dogs in the house, but Honeydew would prefer to be
the sole recipient of all of the attention anyway! And she does love attention.  She really is a honey to have
around!

6/19/08 - Honeydew continues to be a real sweetie here.  The past few days I have caught her curled up
with Beau on a large dogbeds--once in the living room, and again in my bedroom.  I was happy to see them
together!  She has really learned that everyone gets enough food and enough treats so she doesn't need to
grab hers first.  She still (and probably always will) wants to be the boss, but that's ok with me as long as
she settles for letting them know that with just a low growl.

We have been walking regularly and for the last three days have used the Gentle Leader.  Which has made
our walks easier and more enjoyabe for me.  I was able to control her, but when she saw another dog, I
needed to use my strength.  And I want ANYONE to feel comfortable knowing that they could easily walk
her--she is a big strong dog--so the gentle leader is working out great--she doesn't pull at all!  Like most
dogs she hated it at first, but is already getting used to it.  Maybe tomorrow we'll take a walk downtown to
the grocery store with the gentle leader and her backpack.

6/7/08 - This Honeydew is such a sweetie pie.  SHe continues to entrance everyone she meets.  And she
absosultely delights me!  When I come home, she is waiting at the front door--which is a full-view glass door
(except for all the doggie nose art).  And she is just wiggling all over--from her nose to her nub she is so
happy that I am home.  It just makes me happt to see how happy she is, and really makes coming home
more of a pkeasure.

Julie took a few more pictures of her today, so hopefully when they get on the site, you can all see what a
doll she really is.  She has fully recuperated from her urinary tract infection, and is patiently waiting for her
forever home.

5/24/08 - Honeydew has had a busy few days!  Today she spent the afternoon at a BRAD in Saco and
enjoyed meeting all the people she could--she is such a love!

Yesterday we went to the Vet for her Heartworm check--she is negative, Hooray--and her Distemper, etc,
shots.  And to pick up some antibiotics for a urinary tract infection.  Poor girl hasn't been feeling that well!
She was a VERY good girl and everyone thought she had a great temperament.  We also made an
appointment for her spay, and a thyroid test, because her hairloss has not lessened so it may be low thyroid
rather than seasonal alopecia.  And she weighed 81 pounds.

Two days ago she got to take along walk downtown to the grocery store with my son, wearing the doggie
backpack.  She helped him deliver some gtroceries to our house, and seemed to appreciate having a job to
do.

Honeydew is a honey.  She would love to call your home hers and curl up on the couch with you after a
pleasant stroll through the neighborhood.

4/30/08 - Honeydew is finished with her heat cycle, so we can set up an appointment for her spay to happen
in three weeks.  She had her first stroll around the neighborhood this evening--now that she will no longer
attract males.  She definitley enjoyed investigating our usual walkway.  At first she did pull on the leash (and
she is a BIG dog!), but that was just because she was so excited to be in a different area.  By the end of our
stroll, she was no longer pulling, and I can tell that she will be an easy dog to walk, even with just a
martingale-type collar.

Honey likes to boss around the boys--especially around any food--but she is all bark and no bite, even as
vicious as she sounds.  Even though she does like to eat, I think that she has lost a few pounds--we'll see
when she weighs in at the vets.

I cut her extra long toenails, and she was very tolerant of that.  Her alopecia is still pretty significant.  I will
have to try and give her some Vitamin E capsules to see if that helps her hair to grow back in.

I know you are waiting for some pictures of this big girl--I will try to get some soon!

4/20/08 - Honeydew is really showing her sweet Boxer personality!  That tiny nub of hers goes a mile a
minute.  She is getting LOTS of exercize running around the back yard, so she is probably losing lots of
weight.  Her alopecia is still pretty significant, but with the warm weather she doesn't need a coat any more.

Honeydew is still in heat, and my males here are VERY interested.  But ineffectual!  We are being very
cautious to ensure that no there dogs have the chance to come in contact with her.  So no walks for Miss
Honeydew that would spread her scent around the neighborhood.  And no unsupervised time in the back
yard, even though it is fenced in.

Honeydew has shown alot of interest in the chickens that she can see on the other side of the fence--no
barking, but she follows them along the fence line, and has half-heartedly tried to dig under the fence.   Her
surrendering owners said that she did not like cats--but also that she had never met one!  I'm going to play it
safe and continue to state that she is "unknown' around cats.  But she is certainly fine around other dogs, at
least males.  She gets along with both of mine (despite their special interest in her!)

4/17/08 - Honeydew is SO much more comfortable here in her foster home.  We are actually seeing her
want to be playful, and run around the backyard.  That tiniest nub she has has been doing alot of wiggling.
(I thought Charlotte's nub was short, Honeydew's is practically nonexistent!)

Fabulous news is that she is drinking and eating, and had no pee accidents in the house today!  NOne for
the last three nights, either, so I think she is adjusting to our schedule here at the RIverview.  I learned that
we have to wait for a full month after her heat 'sign' stops before she can be safely spayed, so it will be a
while before she is ready for her forever home.  But get your application in, because she has a terriffic
laid-back personality.  She takes treats so gently in that infamous Boxer lip trick.

For a dog who had never been crated before, she is ALREADY crate-trained!  Last night at bedtime, I just
opened the door and said 'crate', and in she went!

4/13/08 - Honeydew is a little less stressed today than yesterday, and is relaxing in the kitchen.  She still
misses her family.  Honeydew (Honey for short) needs a trip to the vets for her shots--she is up to date on
her rabies, but that's it.  She also needs to be spayed.  She is in heat right now, so I don''t know when that
can happen.  Right now she has some seasonal alopecia, and is quite hairless in some spots, so she is
wearing a lightweight dog coat even indoors.

4/12/08 - Honeydew arrived this evening.  She is a big girl, 6 years old, overwieght  AND IN HEAT!  She
is an owner surrender as her family is moving out of state and did not want to take her.  She seems sweet,
but a little nervous.  And her toenails ar extremely long--so long that they seem painful.  We'll do a trim
tomorrow if she seems less stressed.
