| UPDATE 12/1/08 - Gemma continues to be amazing! After we got her one of our five cats gave birth to six kittens. Now those kittens are 8 weeks old and climb all over Gemma, who pretends they aren't there; I even managed to get a shot of one of the kittens nibbling and cleaning Gemma's ear while she was trying to sleep! I took her to work with me once (in a nursing home) and she was a great un-official therapy dog. She is a leaner, and whenever someone new is sitting, Gemma is either leaning on them, or positioning herself for a back rub, which she always gets! We feel like she has been with us her whole life...she is so bonded to us, that people are amazed to learn that we have only had her a short while. ADOPT OLDER DOGS if you want the joy of a dog and the ease of a cat! Gemma's health continues to be good...no new lumps forming and she loves to run. Obedience training was not too necessary, as she knows the basics. HOWEVER, now that she is more comfortable, she is slacking off with the "come here"command ...her nose is telling her 'stay where I am". She is a quick learning though...old dogs CAN learn new tricks! UPDATE 10/10/08 - Gemma is doing GREAT! What a perfect dog! She must have had some great training in her other family! She is very good with the cats (all 5!) and last night when one tried to eat her dinner while she was eating it, she left it and came to the kitchen looking very confused, but not at all upset! She went to the vet two days after we got her and all is well. I am slowly weaning her onto a fresh meat and veggie diet along with eggs, fish oil, vitamins, and some joint tablets every day. She has done well meeting other dogs, and she loves our new dog park where she can run free for a while. We start obedience training in a few weeks and I think she will be at the head of the class! Her name really fits her! She is a gem! 10/4/08 - Gemma has been adopted! 8/11/08 - Gemma had her visit to the vet today--we happily report that she is Heartworm and Lyme free, as well as being up to date on her shots and spayed. I'm so glad our appointment was for today, because the runny nose and sneezing that I thought was a reaction to the Bordatella vaccine turned out to be an upper respiratory infection so she is on antibiotics. I knew that she wasn't feeling well. And even that is more proof that she is such a good girl (As well as being gorgeous!). Gemma has not had a single accident in the house, even though she isn't feeling well. She learned the doggie door in about 5 minutes (she's smart and beautiful!) Gemma met the resident cat and waggged her nub--no killer instinct in this little girl. And even when Honeydew gets a little bitchy, Gemma stays calm amd gentle. She really is a GEM! 8/4/08 - Gemma has arrived at the Riverview Boxerhostel in Maine after a long transport and an overnight stay in NJ--thanks to everyone! She is beautiful and an absolute doll who has already met Beau and has wagged her longish nub at Honeydew (who is not quite sure that she wants another female in the house!) Gemma is 8 years old, spayed and up to date on all her shots. Her family moved and dropped her off at the shelter. Gemma does have a large disfiguring lump on her hip--it is so big it looks like she is growing another tail--and a few tiny lumps including one on her eyelid. We will be having these looked at with our vet soon. Other that, she is already for her forever home! SOME COMMENTS FROM GEMMA'S TRANSPORT VOLUNTEERS: "I left my camera home and my cell phone pics just do not do this Regal Girl justice! She was joy to transport….. Its like she new she was on her way to having a better life." "Miss Gemm is going to make someone an outstanding friend. She is sweet, well mannered, and loved the car ride. Cyndi's son wasn't available for the transport but a friend's daughter, Rosemary, is the one featured in a picture with Gemm. It would be wonderful to bring them all home!" |
