UPDATE 7/26/09 - Emma is celebrating her ONE year "new home day" this weekend, and is doing
great. The vet found an irregular heartbeat at our last check up, which could be a result of the
heartworm Emma came into rescue with. Emma does not seem to know she is "sick" and still goes 0 to
60 in one second flat. She loves to run, play and snuggle.
UPDATE 2/2/09 - Has it only been 6 months since Emma joined our family? She fits in with us so well,
it seems like she has been here forever. She still has clinginess issues, tends to shadow us all the time,
and does have some separation anxiety when we leave for work in the morning, but overall, she seems
to understand we always come back. We bought Emma some work toys to keep her busy while we
are away during the day, and she has the run of the house-choosing to snooze the days away, rather
than throw a dog party. We recently took a ski trip to the Poconos, and were excited to see Emma in
action in the snow. Emma, the snow bunny, chose to curl up by the fire rather than romp in the snow,
and actually gave us a look like "you expect me to do what in that stuff?" She is a love bug and cuddle
bunny, and gets pretty vocal if you don't give her constant attention. She and our 4 year old have some
jealousy issues when it comes to cuddle time, so we have official "family snuggles" while watching
TV in the evenings, so everyone gets equal time to cuddle together on the couch. For a 6 year old,
Emma is pretty rambunctious, and insists on games of tug and fetch each night after dinner, although she
usually gets winded after a few runs. Emma has had constant skin irritations, and we are treating her
with medicated shampoo and spray on going as it crops up, according to the vet this is due to allergies,
and the dry skin doesn't seem to bother her at all. Emma is doing just great. We are about to graduate
from intermediate training, where Emma mastered "go to bed", "heel", and "come with distractions".
Emma is a really great dog, and we feel so lucky to have found her!
UPDATE 10/23/08 - It has been 3 months since Emma joined our family, and she is doing great! She
finally met her "Grandma"-who usually only takes to smaller dogs. Grandma was quick to fall for
beautiful Emma, they bonded immediately, and care packages have been arriving regularly since
Grandma left from her visit. Emma is enrolled in advanced doggie training, and we begin classes in
November. She is such a show off in class, and loves the attention she gets for her "stays". Emma is all
set for Halloween, and will be part of the Fischer "pit crew", as my 4 year old is dressing as a "Race
Car Driver". We head back to the vet soon to get Emma's second follow up check for remnants of
heartworm, and then we can address her gum disease. We really can't rave enough about how beautiful,
smart, and loving this boxer girl is. She has fit into our lives and family wonderfully, and we wish we
could find 5 more just like her to join our family. Thanks again SCBR for bringing us together!
UPDATE 9/23/08 - Emma is doing wonderfully! She continues to amaze us with her playfulness and
energy, acting more like a puppy most of the time than the 6 year old she is. Her latest favorite activity is
playing hide and go seek with my daughter through the house. She continues to be the little love bug,
and just loves to snuggle with us. She also continues to talk up a storm, and if you are not paying
enough attention to her, she will let you know pretty quickly! We drove up to Lancaster to visit with
friends and Emma was in her glory. She ran around the yard with the kids all day and slept like a log
that night. Our friends have an 18 month old, and Emma amazed me with how gentle she was with her,
like she knows the difference between babies and older kids and adults and plays at different levels with
each-she's so smart! We have also had the pleasure of discovering how loud Emma can snore, and how
flatulent she can be. My 4 year old delights in Emma's ability to "clear a room", and of course my
husband is quite impressed by her "abilties".
We did experience some medical drama, due to not having proof of her heartworm treatment, but after
tracking down the vet who treated her, we are back on track. Emma was suffering from allergies, which
we are treating with antibiotics, steroids and a medicated spray. Emma is a good sport and takes her
medication like a champ. We graduate from obedience training this week, and have been contemplating
signing up for advanced classes for this smart little girl. We can't believe Emma has only been with us for
two months, it seems like she has always been a part of our family, and we love her.
UPDATE 8/20/08 - The Fischer's are still trying to figure out how we got so lucky to have been
matched with the BEAUTIFUL, and TALENTED Ms. Emma. (proud new Mom talking!) On her first
day with us, Emma took all of 5 seconds to get acclimated and claim the house, and has been an
absolute joy since her arrival. She is still a little clingy with us, and is not quick to let any of us out of her
sight, but my 4 year old is more than happy to have "her shadow" follow her around the house. Emma is
great with my daughter and more than tolerant of the 4 year old's "affection", she happily allows the
sometimes too tight hugs and face grabbing as long as she gets to give some slobbery boxer kisses in
return. We have discovered Emma's love of all things "tuggable" and she and my husband get in some
great wrestling matches each evening. It is hard to believe this little girl is 6 years old, as she gets these
wondeful bursts of puppy energy and tears around the yard like a mad woman. We began obedience
training 3 weeks ago, and of course Emma is star pupil (still proud new Mom talking). It's obvious
Emma knows what she is doing and mastered sit, stay, lie down, and heal before class even began, my
4 year old however, may end up being "left back". Emma is a big "talker" and carries on conversations
with anyone who will listen to her, she lets us know when she needs to go out by wiggling and talking to
us. She is a real smart girl, and what a love bug. Emma gets compliments on her beauty from everyone
who meets her, and the boy dogs in the neighborhood and at the dog park all love her, and shower her
with attention. We have had a lot of visitors to the house since Emma's arrival, and all of them have
fallen in love with this boxer girl. Emma has become an unwitting "ambassador" for SCBR, and I
suspect you will soon be inundated with adoption applications. No one can believe she is a rescue, she
is certainly breaking the stereotype of what people think of when they hear "rescue dog". Emma's
favorite activity is lying outside in the sun watching us in the pool, or lying next to us watching television,
or lying next to us doing pretty much anything. She just wants to be around and we are happy to have
her with us. Thank you SCBR for bringing us together.
7/27/08 - Emma has been adopted!
5/31/08 - We picked up pretty Emma today at a shelter in NJ. She was a stray and it's so amazing that
no one came to look for her. She is the sweetest little girl. So easy to love. She was spayed yesterday
and is heartworm positive - but a very low positive. She will receive treatment and be ready for her
forever home.
She walked in the house and settled right in. We left her for 2 1/2 hours to go to church and she was
fine in the crate.
My children have fallen in love with her and are arguing over whose room she is going to sleep in as I
write this. Emma sat with my son this afternoon on the couch and watched Caillou (a children't
show)for and hour. She was quite happy to just hang out and sit still with a 4 year old. I can't find
anything wrong with Emma's personality - she just goes with the flow. I just gave her a bath and she
was a saint in the tub. She got in all by herself and even wanted to put her head under the flowing
water. She has really thick "fur" . She didn't even to the doggy shake afterwards - she just waited until
I toweled her off. I think she may even have been kept outside often. No matter - she is all clean now
and smells good.
More tomorrow and pictures, we are all tired as it took several hours to get her home from the shelter
due to the weather here in Southern NJ. We had tornado warnings all day.
5/31/08 - Hi Everyone, Emma (formerly known as the original Dolly - don't ask) has arrived at the
Boxer Bungalow on the Links. She is the sweetest thing and is trying to settle in - My Riley thinks she
needs to get in her face. Sooooo Riley has been banished to the bedroom for a little while - timeouts
are gooooood. Emma was spayed yesterday and is heart worm positive so she will be taking it very
easy for a while. I will send an update and topbox later this evening (pics too).
