UPDATE 7/28/08 - This is our second update for Duke. My husband an I argue over who's dog he is.
Lindzy age 2 says its her Dukie, you will never guess who wins.
We have been going to obedience school for 5 or 6 wks now and he does great in class, sit, stay,
stand, wait, does not want to do a down - super stubborn! We are working on it. He does the best stay
in class, he won't move once he is in a down stay. He is not great with other dogs at all, he sometimes
doesn't like strangers. We were advised to have him around other dogs other than our other boxer
Rocky but it makes me nervous that he would hurt another dog. The trainer said lab, golden, something
laid back off lead, on neutral teritory, we don't have any places like that around.
Duke loves little kids!
Duke also likes steak, he is a counter surfer!
UPDATE 6/30/08 - Duke is adjusting wonderfully, he was home for 10 minutes and was laying on the
couch like he owned the house. He has been great with the kids. We recently started obedience training
and i am hoping that they help with some issues he is now showing. When he goes on walks or is
approached in the yard he is rearing up and snaping in peoples faces and chests. The trainer seem to
think we can fix this.
Today he actually came in from being outside and he had layed on the walk way where the kids and i
just had colored with chalk now he is blue.
When Duke first came i noticed that he was squinting with one eye and he was treated for an eye ulcer.
Since then he has had all his vaccinations done and an ear infection treated.
We love him very much, and so doesn't our other Boxer Rocky.
5/31/08 - Duke just left to go to his forever home. He fell in love with his family instantly. He
smothered his new skin sister with kisses and was very gentle with her. He met his new fur brother
also. They played like they have been together all their lives. His new family said when they first saw
his picture on the website they knew he was their dog. Some things are just meant to be.
5/28/08 - Duke went to a parade on Monday. He loved to see all the people and gave the little kids
kisses. He was not phased when the bands and firetrucks went by. He didn't even flinch at the gun
salute. He spent the rest of the day at a cookout and was very well behaved. He greeted each person
without jumping on them. He played with a small dog for a while and took a few naps in between. He
briefly met the cats and did not seem to enjoy their company. I will try them again before giving it a "no
go". If you are looking for a love bug look no further. I let Duke on the couch the other day when I
was watching TV and he cuddled right up with me, turning around periodically to give kisses.
5/25/08 - Duke has been here for a week now and his personality is really starting to come out. He
loves all the people he meets and gives lots of kisses. He will jump a little when he gets excited but he
is very gentle for his size and is working on staying down. He is very strong and did not come with any
leash manners but he is great when you use a Gentle Leader. He loves to go for walks and will sit when
you put the leader on. He definitely likes to be with his people. He was pretty stressed the first few
nights and would cry and pant if I left the room. I slept on the couch to ease the transition but now when
I go upstairs to bed he settles in on the dog bed (sometimes sneaks on to the couch) and knocks on the
door in the morning to let me know he has to go out. He seems to be good with other dogs. He
watches them as they walk by and will follow them as they walk by the fence. We went to a obedience
class today and he was good with the smaller dogs but was a little dominant with the one his size. His a
great eater and is totally house trained. We are working on crate training but it is a big adjustment for
him. He will be going to a parade and cookout tomorrow to see how he does. He will also meet the
cats shortly. Get your applications in. This handsome boy will not be around long!
5/21/08 - The shelter where Duke was surrendered had this to say about Duke before he came to
SCBR:
"His owner said he did not have time for Duke anymore. He lived with 2 small kids, one was an infant
and he was fine with them. The owner does not know how he is with cats or dogs but said Duke was
attacked by another dog in the past and did not fight back at all. We've only had him for a day and he is
a nervous wreck in the shelter, biting the cage and literally shaking and making this horrific cry. we've
had him out with us in the office and he was nervous but he's even worse in the kennel. he seems very
social and friendly, he actually solicited some play with me today, he needs leash work as he pulls quite
a bit."
5/20/08 - Duke is doing very well. He is a very sweet boy. He is not crate trained and does not like
the crate at all. I keep him in the kitchen while I am not home and he is pretty well behaved. He will
counter surf and he has bypassed all barricades I have set. (baby gate, blocking the door to the living
room with the crate) I just went to check on him during my lunch and he was comfortably resting on the
couch. He does all his business outside and loves to ride in the car. His surrender form states he will
react to the door bell and I have noticed that he barks when he hears the Nextel chirp. It's almost like
he is answering the telephone. He likes to follow other dogs along the fence when they are walking by
and played with a small dog yesterday. He chased her around the yard for a while and was pretty
gentle with her.
5/17/08 - Duke has arrived and is a big handsome boy. He rode very well in the car. He liked to have
his head out the window and laid down some of the ride also. He met a few adults and loved them all.
He is not very happy to be resting in the crate right now but he seems to be settling down in it. I was
told he is good with other dogs and people of all ages. We are still getting to know each other so I will
update shortly.
