UPDATE 6/23/08 - Duke continues to do very well and impress all that he meets! He just got more
compliments from the neighbors down the street that we met for the first time the other day on a walk.
They remarked at his friendly and easy-going disposition and how incredibly handsome he is!! We will
begin Canine Good Citizen classes this week. He still does great on his walks. The only "problems"
we have are when we get home he is REALLY excited and wiggles and jumps all over the place. We
are just trying to minimize the jumping, but think the wiggling is absolutely adorable and he can do that
all he wants. We are grateful that he only jumps on us, no one else. He has also taken to chasing the
kitty (when he happens to come upstairs), although as I write this the kitty is laying on top of the couch
and Duke walked by him twice with only a glance. We continue to enjoy him in every way, he is such a
darling and we couldn't be happier!! We hope he feels the same way (we think he does! !!).
Until the next update.......
UPDATE 5/21/08 - Duke is doing outstanding, and he is just such a joy to have in our home. He just
graduated from obedience school last week, and although there were only 3 other dogs, I must say he
was the best student in the class. He is just so smart, and we are starting to teach him tricks now. We
also signed him up for Canine Good Citizen's classes, which start next month. Duke had himself a
girlfriend named Heidi in his last class, and she may be in the next class. She is a sweet 11 month old
Rottie that Duke is madly in love with.
Duke is full of those Boxer kisses and wiggles, and everyone that sees him comments on how
handsome he is! When he sits, he sits up proud and tall, and that has been commented on as well.
Duke has gained more weight, up to 60.2 lbs at his last vet visit almost 2 weeks ago (we thought his
anal glads were clogged, but turned out he was fine). He wants to be friends with our Kitty, Pooh, but
Pooh is a grumpy old man and spends most of his time in the basement where Duke can't get to him.
He did venture up several times today, and Duke wanted to play, but Pooh was having none of that.
Hopefully Pooh will get to the point of at least being able to tolerate Duke. We'll see.
Bottom line is we are totally in love with this dog, and we couldn't be happier or feel luckier to have
him. He is such a sweetie!! Thanks again for all the work you all do, without you we wouldn't have this
wonderful new family member in our home!!
UPDATE 4/14/08 - Duke is doing very well. He is really a nice dog and he loves to give the Boxer
hugs and kisses (he will lick you to death if you let him). Everyone says how handsome he is.
His temperment is excellent which was recently tested in obedience school when a 3 year old rug rat
took a karate kick near his face. Duke just looked at the boy like, "This kid has no manners." He does
well meeting new people (although a bit shy) and he really likes to make friends with other dogs. He
has 2 girlfriends in obedience school (a Rottie and a Cocker Spaniel).
Duke has had no accidents (he was housebroken when we got him) and he does very well in the crate
when we are both out of the house (not very often). He has excellent leash etiquette so it is a pleasure
to take him for his daily walks (weather permitting).
Duke had a checkup at our vet and he is in excellent health. A stool sample tested negative for
Coccidia (he was treated for that prior to adoption and had lost weight due to the parasite). He was
very skinny when we adopted him but he is filling out nicely. You can really see his muscle tone and not
so much of his vertibrae, ribs, and hips. He weighed 58+ pounds at the checkup. (He did very well at
the vet and showed off his good manners).
Duke is also very intelligent, and has learned his sit and come commands very quickly. "Lay Down" is a
bit of a challenge, but he is usually pretty excited when we try it. And speaking of excited, you should
see his "Boxer Wiggle" when we come home or get up in the morning. It is just hysterical!! What a
sweetie!
Our 2 cats still hide in the basement, but hopefully they will come around.
That's about it so far. I will send an updated picture if you have an email address I can send it to.
If you have any questions please call or email and we will gladly get back to you.
Thanks for everything and keep up the good work.
3/20/08 - Duke has been adopted!
3/12/08 - Duke is such a great boy! He went to the vet last Friday and is heartworm/lyme negative, has
a very slight heart murmur (low grade 1-2 out of 6) and his fecal came up negative for worms, but he
has Coccidia (an intestinal parasite). He is on medicine for the parasite & the vet says he should start
gaining weight within the week. Duke loved everyone he met at the vet, including other dogs and a cat
in a carrier. He even showed his happiness by rolling over on his back many times in the waiting room,
showing off how funny & cute he is! I have not seen ANY issues with his personality, he is just super
sweet. Duke also did great spending the weekend at a kennel as I went out of town for an SCBR
event. The kennel owner kept telling me "He's such a sweet boy! Duke is going to make someone
VERY happy & a nice companion!". I could not agree more! Duke is ready to go to his new home
this week, is that you?
3/4/08 - Duke is doing very well and settling in nicely. He gets along great with my boxer girl and my
other foster boy, Tyson. So far he seems okay with my cat too, but they have only had a couple of
meetings, so we will see how he does when they have more time together. I found out his birthday is
9/11/05, so he is a little younger than thought. He is neutered and will get his heartworm test and
check-up and other shots needed on Friday this week.
I have noticed he is very alert and attentive to what is going on around him (either looking out the
window of the house, the car, when on leash outside, in the yard, etc). Due to Duke's past
"mis-adventures", he will need a home with either a fully fenced yard or someone who will keep him on
a leash when he is outside. Invisible/electronic fencing or letting him be out free with you will not work
with Duke. We do not want to see him get into trouble, being right back where he came from.
2/29/08 - Duke arrived on Saturday thanks to his transport volunteers! As you can see by his pictures
he is a cutie! He is very sweet too and we know he lived with other dogs and was good with them.
Duke has a little bit of a checkered past though and it will take a little while for us to decide what will be
the best home for him. Poor Duke was literally on death row due to very neglectful owners. He was
allowed to run loose and got into trouble with the law two of those times. The first time Duke was
protecting his property and bit a neighbor's ankle. He mostly got pant leg, did not puncture the skin,
but left a mark. The neighbor went to court FOR Duke, saying what a great dog he is and that he did
not "blame" him and did not want anything bad to happen to him. The owners were given a second
chance, but did not follow the judge's ruling and Duke was back in court, this time for chasing a
neighbor when he was running loose. Again, everyone spoke great of Duke and asked that he be
spared as he is such a great dog and just in the wrong home and the wrong situation. The judge
allowed Duke to be spared only if he was released to SCBR, where we could evaluate him and find
him the RIGHT home that will do everything to keep Duke safe and not put in situations where he could
get into trouble again.
More updates as I get to know him better.
FROM SOME OF DUKE'S TRANSPORT VOLUNTEERS:
"Duke was a very good rider. He had no problem wearing the seatbelt harness. He mostly curled
up on the blanket in the backseat, and looked out the windows a little. He's a sweetie, but needs
to get some meat on his bones. Gayle"
"Duke was quite shy and very skinny. He rode like a champ for me. Duke laid down as soon as
he was in the car and didn't make one peep during my leg of the transport. He warmed up a bit
by the time I met up with Kristine and Vincent. He gave a little bit of attention and walked
around a bit with Vincent. I think Duke is going to make someone a great forever friend. He
seems very sweet. Jaime"
