DUKE
4/23/08 - Well, Duke has been with us for 4 days now and has been a wonderful addition to our home. He loves to run! We took him to my in-law's house where they have a couple acres for him to run off-leash and boy did he tucker himself out running circles around and around us! He does love to waunder a bit and if he's called in a stearn voice he tends to ignore you, but if you use a playful "Come here you, silly, Dukie" he comes to you with no problem, butt wiggling the whole way! And he LOVES his squeaky toys. When he's in the mood to play you will know it because all you hear is the constant squeak of his toys. He also likes for me to throw the toy in the air so he can catch it...and he's REALLY good at catching it!

He is a little nervous around new people right now. If he's approched too quickly he'll turn and try to get away in the other direction (and boy is he FAST).  When new people try to pet him on the head he ducks and tries to get away, but has no problem if my boyfriend or I do it.

Duke is doing very well with the two cats in the house. He's very interested in what they are doing but if they get too close, you can tell he gets a little nervous, which is a good thing in my mind (and I think the kitties enjoy the power LOL). Duke hasn't gotten a claw to the snout yet, so I take that as a good sign that the cats are getting used to him as well. The first couple of meetings, I though for sure the cats were going to give him a lesson on who REALLY runs this house! But apparently there has been no need.

As far as other dogs go...he hasn't had too many encounters yet. He has, however, met my aunt's chihuahua, Mocha, and we aren't convinced that the meeting is going to bloom into a wonderful friendship. Mocha is definately an alpha female, but even though she nipped Duke's heels a few times he did nothing back to her. He was just really excited to meet her and I think it made her nervous because he was constantly in her face. So we kept them separate for most of the evening that I was over there...we are going to try again later in the week. This morning Duke saw my landlord's yellow lab, Sunny (male), thru the glass door and he was entranced. I couldn't get him away from the window no matter what I did...called him, tried to offer treats, tried to distract him with toys...nothing worked. I'm pretty convinced that Duke needs to be the only dog in the family, but he'll return all your love 10 FOLD! No doubt in my mind.

Duke is the best cuddler and we've let him get away with lounging on the couch. I tried to keep him off of it at 1st but he was pretty persistant, so I gave in! LOL. He looked at me like "The cat's get to, why can't I?!" He's doing great with letting me know when he has to "go." We haven't had an accident, yet, and so thus I haven't felt the need to crate him. But he hasn't been left alone yet, either. I bring him to work with me until around 2pm, at which time my boyfriend gets off and takes Duke on errands and to visit friends. He loves car rides! But, so we aren't sure if there's any signs of separation anxioty yet. 1st test will be later in the week when I'll be in meetings all day, so Duke will have to stay home alone (I think we will crate him at that point)!

Well, that's it for now...I have a feeling that I'm going to be saying good-bye soon though, I can't imagine anyone not wanting to give this sweet boy his Forever Home!

4/20/08 -
Duke has arrived and has started to settle in very well. I can tell he's a little stressed because he hasn't eaten but a couple bites of his food. He seems to be completely house broken, and is very good about letting me know - little whining and then runs to the door as soon as I get up. We've introduced him to the guard cat of the house (Monroe), and with one good "hiss," Duke FLEW out of the room and onto my boyfriend's lap! Looks like he's a bit of a pansy around cats, (LOL) but I'm going to say he'd be OK with cats in the house...we aren't sure about other dogs yet. He was surrendered because of issues with him fighting with ONE of his two fur sisters. His previous owners weren't sure if it was him or the sister that caused the uproars but they had to be separated because of it. On the plus side, he walks great on a leash, you just have to remind him "slow-down" or "easy" sometimes. He LOVES car rides, knows some basic comands and is just a complete pleasure to have around! I have a feeling he is going to find his forever home very quickly!
