NOTE ** Because I am still a baby, I will only be placed in a home where someone is home often, such as
retired, work at home, work opposite shifts, stay at home parents, etc.
UPDATE 1/5/09 - Dory is doing well and getting big. She weighs around 38 lbs. now, but still likes to curl
up in our laps.
We've made it through the holidays minus a few ornaments off the tree. She a tough one to find chew toys
for. She punctured a nyla-bone frizbee within the first 10 seconds. Stuffed animals last about an hour before
they have been de-squeakered, de-fluffed and dismembered. We have lots of arms and legs floating around
the house!! The only thing she hasn't chewed through are her Kong toys. Crazy dog!!
She loves the snow and going out sledding with the kids. She follows them down the hill and then leaps and
bounds back up over the piles. I think she's part gazelle, and part cheetah. She's the fastest, most bounding
dog I've ever seen.
We finished our first obedience class and will be starting Good Canine Citizen class at the end of the month.
Dory is really smart and seems to enjoy learning new things and showing off to us. Our youngest taught Dory
how to catch snacks when tossed to her. Dory was as surprised as the rest of us were when she caught the
first one. She kept looking on the ground for it!
She's a great companion for all of us and we really enjoy having her around.
UPDATE 12/6/08 - Dory is well and staying warm in her spot by the pellet stove on these cold nights. She
has her final training class this week and we expect her to pass with flying colors. She seems to really like the
class and we are amazed at how easily she picks up the commands. We've been working on having her stay
out of the dining room while we are eating and she's starting to get the idea. She's such a smart girl.
She loves our walks, although it's quite cold at 6:30 in the morning. She has also established a nice group of
dog friends and goes on walks and play dates with them. She still gets sick on car rides so we are prepared
now if we drive longer than 30 minutes.
It will be interesting to see how she reacts to the solstice tree when we put it up next weekend!
Dory has established nice bonds with all of us and we couldn't love her more. She even smiles at us now!
UPDATE 11/5/08 - Dory is doing great. We couldn't have picked a better dog to adopt for our family. She
has adjusted really well and is learning quickly how to get along with all of us. (and us with her!) She wasn't
sure what to make of our "country" home when she first came to live with us. Just the sound of the leaves
and acorns falling from the trees would send her into shivers. Now she loves bounding through the big piles
of leaves and going on long hikes up the mountains that surround us.
This fall she made the rounds to our older sons soccer games and was able to play with all the other dogs
there. She still gets a little car sick if she goes longer than a half hour, but we're working on that. She's
gained a few pounds since we adopted her, but she's still pretty petite compared to other boxers her age
that we've met. She went through her spaying last week and has recovered very well from that. It's hard to
keep her from running around, though. She just wants to play. Our vet loves her and can't get over how well
behaved she is. We have to credit Beth and the rest of Dory's foster family for getting her off to such a great
start.
We had our first obedience class tonight and the whole family went. We all took turns practicing the
exercises and Dory did great. Joe's been working with her everyday so she's got "sit" down pat and did
great with the other commands we are learning. Her favorite part of the class was the "off leash" time. My
daughter liked that part the best too. It was fun to watch her check out and play with all the other dogs.
After a few minutes we noticed that she would go off to play for a bit but she always came back and stood
in front of the family as if she was protecting all of us from the other dogs. Then she'd go off and play again.
She went right to her rug in front of the pellet stove when we got home and hasn't moved since. Puppy
training is hard work!!
Dory likes to stand in front of the pellet stove and bark at the pellets as they drop in to the flames. It's going
to be a long winter if we don't break her of that soon!
She's a great cuddler. If we are sitting on the floor she's immediately in our lap. If we are standing she's
laying on our feet. She just can't get close enough, and the kids love it.
We feel so lucky to have her, and can't believe she's only been with us for only 1 month. Can't wait to see
what she does next!
10/5/08 - Dory has been adopted!
7/28/08 - The Finding Nemo Crew arrived earlier today from Ohio. According to their paperwork they
were surrendered to the shelter on 6/26/08 at 4 weeks old. That would make them 8 weeks old now. They
have been vaccinated (puppy vaccines and kennel cough) and dewormed several times already. The pups
are pretty big for their age. Not necessarily very tall but short, squatty, solid little babies! They look like they
have some mastiff in their heritage (both their builds and coloring). Some of the smaller pups resemble labs.
Maybe Dad was a Mastiff/Lab mix? Guess we will never know! What I do know is they are fat, friendly
and CUTE as can be. Pictures will be coming very soon. You better gets those applications in as they pretty
babies won't be around long!
