UPDATE 8/13/08 - Dexter is the Man! He brings us so much joy everyday! His temperment has
changed so much since we adopted him and he's become a very needy little cuddlebug. Dexter loves
his Mom and I and dances when we come back into the room, even if we're only gone for 5 minutes.
He's discovered water this summer and loves to chase it when sprayed from the hose. He'll crash
through the bathroom door if it's ajar and stick his head into the shower while you're in it, licking and
trying to bite the water.
Dexter went camping last month and he went all 3 days (Against campground rules) off of his leash and
lead. We were the last campsite and had plenty of privacy, there were chipmunks and all sorts of fauna
around, but he barely noticed them. He was content to hang out whith his family and friends, warming
himself by the fire and watching the river rush by.
Dexter also went down to the Cape a few weekends ago. His grandparents bought a house on a bluff
over looking the water. Dexter ran and chased his tennis ball into the surf, even trying to bite the small
waves on the beach only to find them salty and untasty.
Dexter also met a bunny rabbit and two cats at a friends house a couple of weeks back. The bunny
was really interesting, but after I got a good sniff of him, he lost interest. He smelled alot like my Guinea
Pig friend Vinny, who lives at home with Dexter.
Dexter's Mom and I think that he needs a friend to live with and will begin the search for a larger house
for Dexter and that friend next summer. Until then Dexter will make do with his playgroup friends and
his Pug nextdoor neighbor Fred.
UPDATE 4/25/08 - Hello,
First off Dexter is doing very well. Initially, he was completely out of control, but with obedience
training (intensive), a very rigid daily schedule, doggie day care and the help of some anti-anxiety
medication prescribed by our vet, he's become the perfect pet.
Dexter has many friends in our neighborhood, he's the superstar of his day care and he always get
compliments where ever he goes about his behavior and his handsome looks.
Dexter can also walk off-leash now and always stays with us when he's at the off leash dog park.
Dexter is a ball hawk as well, sometimes he'll chase a tennis ball until he's so tired he curls up in a ball,
right on the field and takes a nap.
His health is good as well. He went to the vet last week and got all of his shots updated. He was
microchipped back in February, so if he ever decides to wander, he'll hopefully find his way home.
Dexter recently took a trip to Cape Cod, where he discovered the ocean for the first time. It was a bit
cold on his toes, but he played and chased his ball in and out of the surf for over an hour while he was
off of his leash.
Another aspect of Dexter's turn around is his gentleness with children. He'll lay down upon command
and let anyone pet him.
One sad aspect of Dexter's past is that he was definitely a victim of abuse. It was speculated by our
Vet that he might have been a stolen pet and the last few years of his life weren't too kind.
He has several large scars on his body and of course his broken leg went untreated sometime before
we adopted him as well. Dexter will lunge at anyone who approaches him with closed fists, especially if
they're raised. He has a fear of loud noises as well and is deathly afraid of items such as brooms and
rakes.
We have some great photo's of Dexter if people would like to see them, we'll email them if you'd like.
1/18/08 - Dexter has been adopted!
1/7/08 - Dexter went to the orthopedic specialist last week and turns out he has an old break/injury that
has long since healed and cannot be fixed now. The good news is he is now able to go to his new
home! More updates soon on this wonderful boy from his new foster home!
12/27/07 - The vet said Dexter's left front "elbow" looks luxated (out of joint). She didn't take x-rays
because we would have to sedate him and it wouldn't be worth it for her to take x-rays because she
would have to refer him to an orthopedist who would take his own anyway. Sounds like it may not
require surgery, just manipulation to get it back into place. Dexter will be going to see our orthopedic
specialist.
12/26/07 - Dexter has been limping quite a bit lately, and his front left leg feels very swollen at the
elbow joint. Neither of us can think of any event that triggered an injury, so not sure if he's been
favoring the side since we had him or not. He's been limping slightly for about a week, however it
doesn't seem to be getting better, so he will be going to the vet to get it looked at.
12-18-07 - Dexter is such a wonderful dog, it's hard to imagine he was found in the Merrimack River
with no apparent owner! Thank you to the vet office who took care of him & called us to help!
We've had him for a little over a week and he is perfectly housebroken, gets along great with other
dogs and our cat. The cat seems to like to hiss at him at every opportunity, however Dexter just walks
by and ignores him. He is the perfect dog for a house with children or just lots of attention! He follows
my husband and I around the house, sleeps by (or often on) our bed, and plunks his cute head on our
laps when we sit to watch tv. After he gets his fill of attention, he is fine to relax by himself or with Syla
(our dog). He has plenty of energy, however we take him for a 30 min walk when we get home and
that satisfies him completely. It would be the perfect Christmas present for him (and his new owner) to
find his forever family!
