| 3/31/08 - This pretty little girl is gaining so much confidence! Charlotte enjoyed herself at the BRAD we had in Sanford this weekend. She met lots of people and loved everyone big and small, large and small. Charlotte was not even fazed by the wheeled walker that came in with an elderly woman--and they can be frightening to dogs who have not met that sort of wheeled conveyance before. Charlotte showed that she loves children, and I think that she might even be OK with a cat--she was interested in the bunnies that were in full view of us the whole time we were there, but di not seem to have a high prey drive toward them. Charlotte is also showing more comfort and confidence in our almost daily neighborhood excursions. She has not barked at any of the humans that we have passed (Or have passed us), and is barking less at dogs. When I see a dog approaching, or see that we are approaching a dog, I try to keep her attention on me and place my body between her and the other dog. I'm trying to let her know that I won't let anything happen to her and that I am in charge. She seems to be responding! Her leg is healing up nicely and she'll have her staples out soon. Then she'll be ready for her new home--is that yours? 3/21/08 - Charlotte is snoozing on the carpet next to me after her long day at the vet where she had that disfiguring tumor removed from her thigh. She has eight staples in a longish incision because the Vet wanted to make sure he got a big enough margin. She continues to be a real sweetheart here. I let her up onto my lap while I was watching TV last evening, and it felt good after a long day at work and a long evening at parent-teacher conferences) to be cuddling with a Boxer! They do so love to be lap-dogs despite their size. 3/18/08 - Charlotte has settled in and has met and is fine around both Captain and my Beau. She walks very nicely on a leash--she doesn't pull at all. She is a bit of a "nervous Nellie"--she barked at two of three adolescents we passed on our walk yesterday, and again at a client and her 2 dogs when we entered the vet's offcie today. However, she responded very well to me when I let her know that that behavior was not acceptable, and that I was in charge and she didn't have to worry. By the time we entered the examining room she was fine and accepted all the procedures placidly. Charlotte is Heartworm and Lyme-free, and will be seen by Doctor Doug on Friday to have that disfiguring growth on her thigh removed. Everyone at the vet's office was astonished to hear that she is 8. And they didn't see her racing around my yard yesterday with Captain--boxing, body-slamming, and playing chase like a juvenile! She may not play with toys yet, but she sure knows how to play with another Boxer! 3/16/08 PM - Charlotte has relaxed somewhat here at the Riverview, and is now comfortable enough to have met Beau face to face. She was a bit bothered to see another foster dog arrive(Captain), but settled down and even wagged her tiny little nub at him through the baby gate. Charlotte does not at all like to go into a crate, but is beautifully behaved when in one! It is so nice to see her become more relaxed here and we can see how affectionate she is. We changed her collar for a martingale type (which acts as both a regular collar and a choke so we have more control) and she can't back out of it. Tomorrow we will go for a walk around the neighborhood, and see how she does. 3/16/08 AM - Charlotte arrived safe and sound here at the Riverview and did her business in the back yard like a good girl. She didn't want to eat dinner but ate a nice breakfast this morning. She did not act like she was ready to be nice to my Beau yet so they are still seperated. At my house she will be crated when I am not at home, so she spent an hour in the crate yesteday while I was running errands. She was OK while she was in it but didn't want to go in! She loves attention and is very gentle. 3/15/08 - I had the pleasure of helping transport Charlotte to her new foster home today (the other female boxer in the foster home & Charlotte did not get along). She is a super nice girl and so sweet! She rode great and the person before me said Charlotte rode with her head in her lap and giving kisses the whole ride. I did see on her older vet paperwork that her birthdate is 6/30/99, which actually makes her 8 years old right now. More updates from her new foster Mom soon! Julie 3/7/08 - Charlotte is looking for that wonderful forever home. Could that be your home? Charlotte is totally housetrained, fine on a leash, is very gentle, loves to ride in the car, and knows basic obedience commands but would like to learn some new ones too. We believe Charlotte should have a forever home where she would be the only dog and the highlight of your life! If you have a place in your heart and on your couch for a senior, she will bring you lots and lots of happiness. After medication for her respiratory infection, parasites and round worms (I made a mistake in my last update on the type of worms), she is as fit as a fiddle, starting to gain weight, and playing with toys. We are also taking longer walks, and meeting new people. We are hoping this weekend to see how she does with children as we have not met any young ones to introduce her to. Oh yes, when Charlotte's forever family comes to get her, she would love to show off her red and blue plaid coat that she uses when it's cold outside. Here are two updated photos showing how much better our foster girl looks. 2/25/08 - Charlotte spent today at the vet's office because I thought she had pneumonia. Saturday she started sniffing a lot, and I called the vet, but he said there was nothing to be done if the discharge was clear which it was. Yesterday (doesn't it always figure that you see the worst on a Sunday or in the middle of the night!) the discharge showed that it had developed into an infection, and the poor thing coughed so much for about 15 minutes that she had a nose bleed. I spent the night on the couch with her and Dick took her to the vet this morning. This poor thin little girl lost 4 pounds over the weekend, and not only did he find an infection, but also parasites and ringworms. She is being treated with antibiotics and will be fit as a fiddle in a few days -- and hopefully a little chubbier. Charlotte is a wonderful house guest. She loves to be loved and gives so much more in return. She is clean and neat and even though she was not feeling well, never had an accident in the house. Our vet said again today he thinks she is younger than 9, and I'm looking forward to when she is feeling better trying to give her a little more exercise than she has had. If you have love in your heart, and want a lady who is kind, caring, settled, and gives great Boxer kisses Charlotte is the girl for you. We have slowed down the meeting process between she and our Boxer, Abby. They have met through the gate, with some barking on both parts, but we want to wait for a while until Charlotte has an opportunity to fully recuperate before we try to have them meet again. 2/18/08 - We visited the vet today with the following report. Charlotte has a good heart, what our vet believes to be an old knee injury, and a cyst on the outside of her right leg and under her neck -- both of which were tested and found to be only cysts. He said she appears to have a young mouth and may be somewhat younger than her records indicate. It appears that she has not been to a vet since 2004 where it was reported she had a mast cell removed. And, of course, he said she needs to put on some serious pounds. She met some neighbors today and was very well behaved with them all as well as in the vet's office with both he and his staff. She had another great night last night, and I'll update when we introduce she and Abby over the weekend. If you have a place in your heart and on your couch for a senior, this little girl will bring you lots of happiness. 2/17/08 - Charlotte had a great first night. I decided to leave her downstairs in the den with the radio on knowing that I could and would hear anything that might be going on. She did absolutely nothing but make herself comfortable on the couch and get up to give me Boxer kisses when I went to check on her . The shelter told me today that she has been there since 2/5, and they were feeding her small meals several times a day which we are also doing. She does not have any food aggression that I can tell as I have picked the bowl up while she was eating with no problem. She very gently sits and waits for you to give her those treats which we are doing whenever we come in from a walk. Although the shelter said she did not like to have a collar and leash put on, she is letting us put them on. Our plan for now is to slowly introduce her to different things, i.e. Abby Girl, neighbors, the little girl around the corner who loves all the pooches who have been with us. 2/16/08 - A friend and I picked up Charlotte at a local shelter where she was turned in with a 7-year old Boxer. We gasped when they brought her out. She is skin and bones! Her owner who turned her in because she had a baby and couldn't afford to feed the dogs. Our wonderful groomer waited for us to get there with Charlotte and as part of her "second chance" gift, he bathed her and thanked us for taking her home -- meaning no charge. For the next several days we will let everyone settle in and see each other through the gate. She is one scared, insecure girl. |
