CHAMP - Boxer/Golden Retriever Mix
|
UPDATE 7/25/09 - Hi, Champster here checking in to update everyone on me. It's been a year since
I took that long car ride from Buffalo to Massachusetts and I have to say I really love it here. My
mommy still takes me on car rides all the time. I love being in the car almost as much as I love my
peanut butter treats. Mommy and I are always traveling all over the place, and lately she's been talking
about some far away place called Spain that we're going to be moving too. She also has been talking
to me with funny new words that I don't really understand. We came home from our favorite pet store
last week with a brand new crate that she wants me to get used to. I wasn't too excited about it at first,
I mean who wants to sleep in a crate when you can sleep on mommy's bed?? But because I'm such a
good boy I've been sleeping in there every night and she is so happy in the morning. I like it when she's
happy and gives me belly rubs for being good. We've been working on all sorts of new tricks, which
I'm SOOOOOOOOOO good at. Right from the start too, not to brag or anything. She told me we
might be going back to see my favorite trainer, Spence, a few times before we go to that funny Spain
place. I'm still a little nervous when I meet new doggies, but I've been trying so hard to meet everyone
nicely sometimes I get too excited. Spence is always trying to get me to meet new dogs and helps me
not be so nervous. Anyway, that's it from here for now. I'll be sure to let everyone know what this
Spain place is like. Mommy keeps saying they have lots of CHEESE and boy do I love cheese so I'm
sure we'll be happy there. Paws out for now!
UPDATE 2/8/09 - Greeting from Champ and I! Sorry for taking so long to get to our 6 month update,
but we've been out and about traveling all over the place, but we're finally back home and ready for the
update. We finished our obedience classes a few weeks ago and I wish had I learned about the magic
of hot dogs months ago. We are definitely reaping the benefits on our walks and hikes thru the snow.
We tried to go snow shoeing, but I need more practice just standing up before we start taking it
seriously.
We just got back from visiting some friends down in North Carolina and Champ was a hit with all of his
new canine buddies down there. He even has a new girl friend named Ginger, another rescued Boxer
the same age as he is. They played together for hours and were giving lots and lots of kisses all week
long. They were both heartbroken when we left and my friends told me Ginger kept looking all over
the house for him for several days after. I know I'm looking forward to heading back down there to
see all the dogs again and Champ is too!
The past six months have flown by so quickly and now I cannot imagine my life with out him. He has
made our house such a happy place and we wouldn't trade the craziness for the quiet again!
UPDATE 10/20/08 - I can't believe how quickly the past 3 months have gone by! Champ is doing
fantastic in his obedience classes and loves practicing all of his new tricks for an audience. We're
starting to work on not getting so excited when people ring the doorbell in preparation for all of the
trick-or-treaters that will be stopping by soon, which could be interesting. We've also started going for
runs in the morning one or two days a week and there is definitely an improvement in his focus and
concentration. If only I had his stamina! This boy can run for hours it seems. He has definitely settled
in here at his new home and we love every minute spent with him!
UPDATE 9/21/08 - Champ has made some huge improvements over the last month! We started our
obedience class last week--and despite our loud arrival, once he calmed down he really did well with
all of the new ideas and techniques we practiced with the other dogs. Champ gets very nervous when
he is around new dogs and people and he was starting to get very hard to handle if I couldn't calm him
down right away. The trainer gave me some tips on how to get him settled quickly and they've worked
like magic so far. I've slowly started introducing him to situations were there were more than just 1
other dog around and he's been doing quite well with that. We had a big outing to the pet store
yesterday and after the first few anxious minutes, he calmed right down and was the star of the
store--making friends with all of the employees and customers! He's also made some recent
improvements on our walks and I'm hoping we can start going for runs together once I get him to stop
running sideways as he's biting the leash :)
UPDATE 8/21/08 - Champ has been a wonderful addition to our family! He has adjusted very quickly
to living in our home and easily fell in line with our daily routines. Our morning walks have been a bit of
an adventure though since Champ tries to meet every squirrel, bunny and chimpmonk in the
neighborhood! Beth's suggestion of the Gentle Leader was the greatest advice for us and has made
handling this very strong and playful boy much easier for my mother and I. We don't start obedience
class until mid-September, but we've been practicing our basic commands and he seems to be picking
up on those very easily and I'm sure Doggy Manners will be a snap for him! We are very excited to be
meeting our SCBR cousin Brandy this weekend when we go up to New Hampshire to visit my aunt and
uncle for our annual family gathering. More details to come!
7/19/08 - Champ has been adopted!
6/12/08 - I can't believe Champ is still waiting for his forever home. Champ has learned to give paw
when asked. He is also learning that I will not open his crate door until he is laying down and calm.
Champ loves to learn new things and would be a great student for obedience class. It doesn't take him
long to learn what is expected of him (behavior wise). We recently put a fence up in our backyard and
we have found that it is possible to tire Champ out. If you accidentally throw the ball over the fence
Champ will stand and face where the ball went. If you still can't find the ball he will stand there and kind
of point to where the ball is by lifting a front leg. Champ continues to get along with everyone and looks
forward to the neighbor's 5yr old grand-daughter to come over with the occasional treat. Champ will sit
there patiently until she puts a treat in his face. He doesn't jump on her or try to give her kisses. More to
follow soon...
5/14/08 - Champ is continuing to do well here with us. We recently fenced the backyard and Champ
has a ball back there playing fetch. We have continued to take Champ on walks and have found that a
Gentle Leader Harness works great with him. He seems to mind a lot better on walks when he wears
the harness. Champ is a pretty obedient dog except for sneaking out of the door behind you. Champ
doesn't go very far very fast though, it's all a big game to him. The only way we have found that works
to get him back in the house is playing fetch with a stick. Champ is a sucker for sticks, he absolutely
loves them. To keep this from happening in the future I have been working with Champ on sitting before
I open the door up. Champ is a beautiful and (mostly) obedient dog and he can't wait to find his
forever home.
4/4/2008 - I took Champ to the vet this past Tuesday. Champ was given a clean bill of health and he is
now up to date on his vaccinations. He did really well waiting to be seen at the vet's office. Champ is
continuing to do awesome with the other dogs. The other dogs aren't as playful as this little guy, so
Champ will go up and bark at them until they start to play with him. We have learned that Champ
vwalks great on a leash if you keep it short. Champ loves to play fetch a lot but he doesn't like to
release the ball. I have learned that if you grasp the ball and firmly tell him "No" once or twice that he
will let go. More updates to follow soon....
3/28/08 - Champ is a beautiful 2 year old Boxer/Golden Retriever Mix. He is fawn colored with a small
white patch on his chest and white tips on each paw. Champ still has his dew claws and a full tail. His
tail is really cute because it curls up. If you sit down next to him on the floor his tail actually curls around
your arm. Champ will be going to the vet's this Tuesday to get up to date on all of his shots. I don't
know if Champ is good with cats but he's great with my 2 boxers. At night Champ sleeps with my 17
year old son. During the day when no one else is home Champ spends his time in a crate. His past
owner said Champ loves to chew on things he shouldn't be chewing on. When we first got Champ I
didn't think he was ever going to lay down and take a nap. I was assuming that he was a pretty high
strung dog. After being here a couple of days though, I came to realize that Champ was stressed and he
has calmed down a lot. Champ likes to take walks put pulls quite a bit on the leash. We believe this can
be corrected with a gentle leader harness. If you like to play fetch, then Champ is your dog. Champ
loves to play fetch but he doesn't like to let go of the ball when he brings it back. Another thing that
Champ loves to do is play tug of war. He will do either of these things all day if you let him. Champ is
by far the most active dog I have had in rescue so far. Champ is anxiously awaiting his forever home.
3/25/08 - We picked up Champ from his owner a few days ago. Champ was surrendered to us
because he growled one time at his owner's 15 month old child. The owner didn't want to take any
chances that it would happen again or escalate to a bigger issue. I will be giving more of an update on
Champ in a couple of days once we get to know him better.
