02/05/08 - Brutus is doing wonderful, and he is patiently waiting for someone to want to give him a
home of his own and make him a part of the family. He is such a good boy and listens so well, he just
wants to please. He really deserves to find his forever home soon and have someone to love him like he
deserves. He will definitely return that love tenfold. Brutus enjoys going outside and running around and
playing in the snow. He found a stick poking out from the snowbanking today and pulled and pulled it
until he got it out and ran across the driveway with it in his mouth. He got to a patch of black ice and
each of his four legs went in a different direction. It was so funny to watch, but didn't stop him a bit, he
went on running, not missing a beat. He is such a lovebug. We are getting quite attached to him, it will
difficult to see him go, but we know that there is someone out there that will read this and know that this
is the dog for them and will love him and take as good care of him as we do. I know you won't be
disappointed one tiny bit, he is such a well behaved boy and just so cute and cuddly. You would be
very lucky to find a dog like this.
1/24/08 - Poor Brutus had a natural tail with the end infected and bleeding all the time. Every time he
would wag it, lots of blood would go everywhere. Being a very HAPPY boy, the tail was never
stopping either. After over 2 weeks of his foster home trying everything to get it healed (& being very
patient!), it was only getting worse. The vet had recommend 2 weeks earlier to just dock it, but that
goes against what we feel about adult dogs (it's an amputation to an adult dog). For Brutus' health, he
had his tail docked on Monday and is doing very well. He kept the bandage on until last night and the
vet checked it today and gave us an E-collar to keep him from chewing on it and removing the staples.
He is feeling great and seems like a new dog. He is so bouncy and happy. I think he feels better without
that sore tail. Brutus is ready to go home!
01/20/08 - Brutus continues to do well and seems to be feeling great. He is looking good, too, now that
he is eating a good diet and putting on some weight. He really has a gorgeous brindle coat. The brown
is kind of a caramel color and is so shiny. He is very cuddly and it is so nice to have him laying beside
you and petting his fur, since it is so soft and feels wonderful. Some boxers have a courser, rougher
coat, like my Mugsie and Mia, but Brutus' is one of the softest that I have seen. He behaves very well
being confined to the kitchen and sunroom. There is a loveseat in the sunroom that he just loves to curl
up on and sleeps like a baby. He is very well housebroken and can hold it a long time. He doesn't have
accidents in the house and lets us know when he needs to go out. I don't crate him at night, because he
sleeps on his dog bed in the kitchen, since I have to crate him during the daytime. We only crate him
when we are out of the house, even though he doesn't get into things, but he and my dogs don't seem to
like each other so I don't want to take a chance that they get together while we are gone. He is quite a
few years younger then my two and they just don't care for his excitement and bounciness. He really
isn't hyper and settles down well, especially for a dog his age, but when I let him out in the rooms where
my dogs are, they are not happy with him or he them. Outside, we introduced them one at a time, they
did the sniffing thing that most dogs do when meeting a new dog face to face, and all was well, but
inside the house, even with one at a time, it doesn't work out for some reason. I am thinking that Brutus
might do best as an only dog. I am putting it mildly when I say that he is a loyal, sweet dog with people,
big and small and he gets very attached. He does great on a leash and is a pleasure to take for a walk.
He will not run outside ahead of us when we take him out, he waits for us to go with him and stays very
close to us. He goes and does his business and comes right back to stay close. He is playful and alot of
fun out of doors, my husband and I both enjoy taking him out and playing with him. He really is looking
for someone to take him home and and love him. I know he would be so happy to have a forever home
of his own. He will be a great pal and love you back with all he's got.
1/14/08 - Mr Brutus is just doing terrific here in his foster home. He has adjusted well and seems so
grateful to be in a warm and cozy place instead of the shelter he spent a few weeks in. He is over a
bout with kennel cough and the vet gave him antibiotics to help with that. He is like a new dog and has
more energy then he did previously and is acting like a well behaved, normal boxer.
This weekend we had our three grandchildren over for a couple of days. Brutus loved them being here
and it was mutual. They just adored him. He was so cuddly and gentle with them. He is such a lovebug
and just wants to be where his people are and will curl up and go to sleep so contented.
We also introduced our dogs, Mugsie and Mia one at a time outside with Brutus and they did quite well
after much sniffing to get acquainted. He is a little more energetic then they are so they were a little
taken aback, but did okay with him. Also, his tail is something they are not used to and tried to stay out
of the way of it.
Brutus barked for the first time today. My husband was outside shoveling off the front porch and Mugs
and Mia heard him and started barking. Brutus was gated in the kitchen and started to bark, too. It was
so funny, Mugs and Mia ran back into the den where I was sitting and where Brutus was gated and
looked at him so surprised and then at me as if to say "he can bark!". It was a riot because they
geniunely seemed surprised by the noise coming out of this dog. He has quite a bark! After all the the
different experiences that we have put Mr Brutus through, like going to the vets, walking on a leash,
meeting our grandchildren and our dogs, he is still an A+ dog that anyone who has a wonderful, loving
forever home to offer him, would be so fortunate to adopt.
1/10/08 - Brutus has been with us a week today. He is much more energetic and will romp and is so
playful when we take him outside. We have a rubber stick that he chases after and will run after it and
bring it back, sort of. He couldn't find it in the snow the other night, so he and I went walking in the
snow up to our knees, because we kept sinking in, trying to find this stick. Brutus kept digging in the
snow looking for it and going around and around trying to find it. It was a fun time with him and he kept
me laughing as we were sinking in the snow trying to find his stick. He tried so hard to find it. He
knows our routine now and is very good about going in his crate when he is told when we leave for
work or it is bedtime. He wasn't feeling well when he first came in and was a perfect angel, almost too
good. Now that he is feeling better, he is still a very sweet, good boy, but now he is acting more like a
normal boxer being playful and interested in toys. This is such a terrific dog, as I have said previously.
He really deserves to find a loving home with a family who adores him, as I know he will them with all
his heart. He just loves people and being petted. He rolls over and lets us pet his belly and he can't
keep his eyes open, as it relaxes him so. The grandkids are coming over the weekend, so I will have
more to report about how he is with them. I have not introduced him directly to my two dogs yet, as
there were alot of growls over the gate. Now they don't pay too much attention to each other and
maybe now that Brutus is settling in and feeling better, we will try each of our two dogs seperately,
starting with our female, and see how it goes. I am not sure of his history with other dogs. The shelter
checked off that he was good with them, so we will see.
1/04/08 - Brutus has been with us for a little over 24 hours and he is just the best boy he can be. He
went into his crate the first night here, with a little coaxing, whined for a little while, but then settled
down and went to sleep for the night. He walks very well on a leash and stays right beside us when we
take him out to do his business. He really loves people and whoever adopts him better be ready for a
great buddy. I had to take him to the vets to have his tail checked, and he was such a good boy. The
vet and his assistant commented on how well behaved and calm he is. I took him to Wendy's after for a
burger. He sure deserved it for being so good! When I went through the drive-thru, Brutus sat up in the
car and was sniffing all the wonderful smells from the restaurant. When I got the bag of food, he laid
back down like he figured it probably wasn't for him. He just curled up on the front seat until I drove to
a place to stop and give him his burger. He loved it and seemed so pleased that there was something
yummy for him.
I looked over his paperwork from the shelter and read that Brutus was surrendered to them because his
owner passed away. Poor boy, as loyal as he is, it must have been tough for him to lose his friend and
then to find himself in a shelter. Brutus is looking for a new friend, someone to give him love and
attention as he has plenty of love to give. He truly deserves the best forever home possible.
1/3/08 - We have a wonderful new guest at the Homeward Bound Boxer Haven. His name is Brutus
and boy is he a sweetheart! For a dog who has only been here for about three hours, he has settled in
well. Right now he is laying down on the dog bed gated in the kitchen after a hearty meal, to help put
some meat on his bones, and a quick walk outside to do his business. (it is freezing out tonight) He has
met my two dogs through the gate and he has been wagging his tail and seems very happy to see them.
Not only is he gorgeous and has a super sweet face, he is gentle and calm. Those two words were
written on his paperwork by the shelter who he has been with since mid-December. They also put on
his info that he is very loyal and when I went to pick him up they were so happy that he was going into
rescue to help find him a forever home. They said he is a terrific guy! I don't think Brutus will be in
rescue long as he is a great dog who will make a wonderful addition to the family.
