1/19/08 - Oh my God, I can't believe this. Zak and Weezy were brought in together, fostered together, and adopted within a week of each other. Does anyone know if they were brother and sister? I just can't believe they got sick with the same symptoms, vomiting and pain in their back legs, and had to go to the bridge during the same week. I am trembling as I write this - what are the chances???? Ryan, I am so sorry for you and your family and your other boxer, I just can't believe it - we are in the exact same situation at the exact same time. It makes me think there is something else at work here..........at least we can take comfort that they arrived at the bridge together and will keep each other company on the other side. Now I'm crying again, but in some way this seems meant to be. Run free Zak and Weezy, together and happy. We loved you so and always will. 1/19/08 - Although we rescued Weezy only 10 months ago, she was undoubtedly a proud member of our family. When she first arrived at our house she was in rough shape, cowering when anyone would walk towards her. Over the next few weeks and months she leaned to trust us and eventually realized we were just here to love her. She bonded with our other boxer and became a cozy pillow and cuddling buddy to our 2 year old daughter. Always reserved in nature, she would run in circles when her leash got taken out. She loved taking trips to the park and always sought out the smallest dogs at the park to play with. Her warm friendly eyes were able to seek out loose socks no matter where they were as they were her favorite delicicy. A week ago, Weezy went to the vet for a routine Rabies shot and we were shocked when the vet guessed her age to be around 8 or 9 years. When we adopted her we were told she was just 4 or 5. Although she was in good health, our family was saddened to hear of Weezy's age as it meant she had suffered at a puppy mill much longer than we had thought. We eased our minds just thinking of how far she had come in 10 short months and what a happy dog she had become. Just a few days later Weezy became sick and began to throw up. Thinking it was maybe a stomach bug or a bad sock, we all gave her extra hugs, and substituted her normal food with rice in hopes to ease her stomach. When she didn't seem to be getting any better we contacted our vet and brought her in to the office. At the office we learned that Weezy's intestines had become intertwined and the surgery to fix her problem as very risky for a dog of her age and her chances of a full recovery were slim. We also learned of the severe arthritus lingering in her hind legs. Knowing how much Weezy had already suffered over the course of her life, we knew what we needed to do. While being cuddled and rubbed and told how special she was Weezy went peacefully on to her next life. She was such a gentle sole and brought such wonderful times and feelings to our family. We all learned so much from her and we know that she learned from us what it is like to be loved. We will miss Weezy dearly and she will always hold a special place in our family. We love you Weezy. UPDATE 12/4/07 - I know it has been a while since we have updated Weezy. We are very happy and proud to say that she is doing great. Within the last couple of weeks Weezy has taken another huge leap foward. She is starting to play with other dogs at the dog park. Not just reacting to other dogs but activley engaging other dogs to play. The other day Weezy and my other boxer Dixie where wrestling and playing. This was the first time this has happened. After playing Dixie and Weezy then curled up together and took a knap together. We have been through a long and trying time with Weezy and sometimes we woundered if she would ever be a normal dog. We have learned that there is no such thing as a "normal" boxer but I feel that maybe she is forgetting her past and is becoming a happy dog. So to anyone who may be woundering the same things we were, ( are we doing the right thing? Can a abused dog be rehabilitated to get past their horrible past?). The answer is yes. Give all you can to your dogs and they will return with all the love and loyalty they can. We are so proud of her and cann't wait to see what the future. UPDATE 6/19/07 - In the 3 months that weezy has been with us she has made alot of progress. Upon her arrival she would cower when approched, she was afraid of leashes and wouldn't come out of her crate. While she is still a mellow dog, she no longer uses her crate plays with our other boxer Dixie and spends most of her time with the family. She is no longer afraid of leashes and does the typical boxer wiggle and dance because she knows that she is going for a walk. She prances around our yard like a little puppy, loves her trips to the park and lies very still to allow our 14 month old daughter to cuddle up on her for a little nap. Weezy is a wonderful addition to our family and is finally holding her head high like the proud Boxer we all knew she could be. UPDATE 3/31/07 - Weezy has been slowly adjusting to her new home. When we first got weezy home she would cower anytime anyone would try to approach her. She still cowers alittle but only when it is people she doesn't know. I have taken her to the dog park a few times with our other boxer dixie. the first time she was very afraid of everything. The last time I took her she was running around, and it even looked like she was having fun. She is a great dog and we love having her as a part of out family. 3/3/07 - Weezy has been adopted! 2/11/07 - Today was a very good day so far for little Weezy. I got up and let them out of their crates for their morning's business, and when I let them in, the other two went running to our son Pat to give kisses and Weezy stayed beside me in full boxer wiggle mode !!! I am soooo excited, as this is the first time she has wiggled, let alone rub all over me, and let me pat and scratch her. My son jumped off the couch to escape the onslaught of boxer love and poor Weezy ran back to her crate. Everyday we see a little more progress. Weezy is wonderful with other dogs, and goes out to do her business as long as she is following the other two out the door. This good girl has had one accident in the house the first week, but has been housebroken ever since. She and her puppymill brother were treated for whip, round and tape worms, and we are hoping to see them put on some much needed weight. She does better with soft food and treats. Overall, she seems to be much better adjusted and after this morning's display, I can say, happy. 2/1/07 - We had a major breakthrough today thanks to my trusty food processor!! She has eaten everything I have put in front of her since noon, including her antibiotics for her mouth. A special thanks to Leann for the crate issue. She eats and goes right back to her crate to get some much needed sleep. BUT... tonight while I was cooking supper, I went over to Zak and sat down to pet him when Weezy came right over to me and stuck her head under my hand for her share. She actually wagged her little nub for the first time!!! 2/1/07 - Weezy is the sweetest dog. She is very petite and her fur feels like chenille. She needs to put on ten or fifteen pounds to really look her best. Right now, she looks a little bit like a runway model. She still isn't eating a whole lot, but we are trying everything to get her enticed. She did eat some homemade potato pancakes from my hand the day before her vet trip. This is one shy, fearful girl, yet with all her fear, she has absolutely no aggression. She will now follow you from room to room at a safe distance, but will not budge an inch while on lead. We will save that for when she feels a little safer. She does very well with other animals. I believe she should have another dog as a companion for security. While her foster brother Zak was still at the vet overnight, she followed our cat Sweetie around when her doggie foster sister Lacey was unavailable. She has had her spay and 4 teeth removed. Her breath smells alot sweeter now and I can hardly wait for her to feel comfortable enough to give kisses. So far Weezy has had only two accidents in the house. The first was the first morning and the second was immediately after the vet. She paces in front of the door when she needs to go out. She will make some lucky, gentle people very happy. 1/28/07 - What calm dogs these are- we didn't hear a peep out of either one the whole ride! She is afraid, but calms easily if left alone. He's a big smush face-he rested his head on our dgtr's arm on the ride. They smelled pretty good- thanks to their baths last night! I'll post pics soon. Thanks for the chance to help 2 cute dogs. 1/28/07 - Hi, Richard and I did part of this transport too, and I couldn't agree more. Zac is an absolute love bug...and he's so handsome! I rode in the back seat with these guys from Worcester to Portsmouth, and got more kisses from Zac than I could count! He settled down behind my seat for a good portion of the ride, but even then always positioned his head so that it was pressing gently against the arm I was using to pat the female. She's adorable too...she has a very LONG tongue that she has a hard time keeping in her mouth, so most of the time it looks as if she's sticking her tongue out at you! She also has the softest coat...and was as gentle as possible, in spite of how frightened she obviously was. I was able to get a couple pictures of her, but the battery on the camera died just as I started to try to take a picture of Zac. Once it's recharged, I'll at least send her pics on. Take care, Anne 1/28/07 - Hi all, I met Liz today to pick up the male and female puppy mill kids. We put the little girl in the back seat, and zac up front with me. The little girl was so out of her element that she wouldn't even walk. When I got to Darien, I had some time while I waited for Patty so I took Zac for a little walk around the rest area. Someone will be lucky to have this guy. He walks well on the leash and his hole but wiggles at the sight of anyone. He wanted to meet everyone he saw. He slept most of the ride with his head on my arm or lap. When he wasn't sleeping, he was giving lots of kisses. After his walk, I sat in the back seat with the frightened little girl and gave her some love. She was scared but didn't protest any, and even wagged her little nub for a minute. I think with a little time she'll be more than happy to be someones little couch potato. Stevan |
