TOBY
UPDATE 1/28/08 -  has it been 6 months already?! toby is doing really well. he's fully adjusted to us
and to our home. he is used to his routine and does very well with it. he's either at work with my
husband during the day or at day care. we go to the beach on the weekends where he runs and plays
until he's exhausted. when we get home, he loves to cuddle with us and loves to hear what a good boy
he is. he's quite a charmer.
we had a follow up scan for his heart murmur and received good news. the murmur is not as bad as
originally thought. we will plan to do one every 9 months to a year to keep an eye on it. every now and
then, he develops some small patches of dry skin. we keep a humidifier going during the winter months
to help with this. we dab a little vitamin E oil on the spots and it seems to work well.
toby is a wonderful boy and doing well! thanks everyone :)

UPDATE 10/29/07 -   hello everyone,
toby is a happy dog :) he's in fantastic shape. his energy levels are way up now having lost some weight
and getting consistent exercise. he loves running and playing on the beach. we've been throwing balls
and frisbees for him and he loves both.
he loves riding in the car and loves coming home even more. when we arrive, he runs up the stairs to the
door and wiggles widly until we let him in. then he runs around the house a few hundred times, in and
out of his crate, up and down the stairs, around the kitchan and living room. he's playing with his toys a
lot more these days. he sleeps really well at night and his appetite is great.
obedience class hasn't been super useful to toby as he knows all his basic commands and then some.
his class is made up of puppies mostly so toby gets to show off a little ;) he's an absolute gentleman on
the leash and the pulling (when he sees something like a squirrel) has diminished tremendously. he walks
by my side with a loose leash and it's a real pleasure to stroll with him.
day care on the other hand has been very beneficial for toby. he has two full days per week of running
and playing with lots of other dogs. the few weeks when we pick him up, the staff tells us how he's
finally learning how to play and getting along with the other dogs really well. we're very happy for him
that he's at this point.
overall, toby is a very happy and healthy boy. we feel extremely lucky to have him :)

UPDATE 9/28/07 - hi folks,
toby continues to do well. he's been going to day care 2 times per week where they exercise and
socialize him. he's doing really well there. obediance class is going well too. we've taken him on another
camping trip with some friends who showered him with affection and lots of attention. he was loving
every minute!
toby does still have a problem with other alpha males. he does seem a little better in this regard but
when he has lots of energy and he wants to go, he's a force. we're hoping continued socialization will
lessen this undesirable trait. in every other way, toby is absolutely wonderful. we're very very lucky to
have him.
his health is great and he's looking good. we will be taking him in for a follow-up scan for his heart
murmur and will let you know how it goes. fingers crossed...
thanks to you all for your hard work and dedication to these wonderful animals!

UPDATE 8/28/07 -   toby has been doing tremendously! he's adjusted to our home and to us very
well. he warms up more and more each day. he's settled into his routine and looks forward to his
bedtime every night. my husband takes him to work every day and walks him either in the woods or lets
him run with other dogs in an open space at the woods every day at lunchtime. his aggression with other
alphas has improved a lot. i walk him in the evenings. he pulls a little with me but i've been working on
this. he's a very quick learner.
we took him camping a few weeks ago and he did really well. he was romping around in the seaweed
and over the rocks having a blast. in the evening, he nosed at the zipper on the tent because he wanted
to go to bed! he wasn't happy until we all were in the tent together, then he fell asleep :)
we took him on another trip last weekend to the house my sister rents on a lake in maine. he got along
well with her dog. we took them hking twice. toby stays with us but likes to be in front of my sisters dog
:) he doesn't like the water at all. on both trips he wouldn't even get in to his ankels. we're very careful
around water with him as we know boxers are not good swimmers.
toby had a good visit at his new vet. he's down to 73 pounds although she'd like to see him ideally at
68. the only concern is a heart murmur she found. we've just had an echocardiogram done along with
an ekg and blood pressure test. he was a very good boy for both appointments. at this point, we will
have the echo repeated in one month to see if there is any change. if there's no change, we will assume
he's had this all his life and just keep an eye on it. if it fluctuates, we may consider medication.
we start obedience class on 9/11. we spoke to the trainer about his aggression with other alphas. he
said we were doing all the right things by socializing him and introducing him to lots of new things. he
gave us the ok to start into a group class. we're looking forward to it.
overall, toby is doing really well and we're absolutely smitten with him. he seems happier and more
relaxed every day. he loves to goof around int he yard with us, running and jumping and wrestling. he
loves riding in the car. he's wonderful with kids. he's eating regualrly twice a day and looks great. he's
full of wiggles and "beans". and i'm sure... i've seen him smiling :)
thanks to you all!

7/28/07 - Toby has been adopted!

7/7/07 - Toby has settled in nicely. He has some of the traits most desired in a boxer- he is fully
crate-trained, house-broken, knows basic obedience, sits, gives paw and walks well on a leash:)  This
is a REAL GENTLEMAN. Toby does well with other dogs who have passive personalities.  They
must be passive and not too challenging. Toby is fast friends with the other fosters and passive resident
dogs.  He is fine with dogs who do no evil eye challenging.

Toby has adjusted to eating dog food.  He turned down the first couple of meals here, just picking out
the chicken or beef.  Hunger won over and he looks forward to his 2 meals a day. He as clearly used to
human food and a diet of just table food is not good for our furry friends.  He has dropped a couple of
needed pounds due to eating a better diet and is more active romping around the yard with the other
dogs.  Toby does have one little quirk-he can and will, open doors to let himself outside-so, he will
need to be watched closely around any door to the outside. Get your applications in, this boy will not
be around long.

6/30/07 - Toby arrived yesterday. Although he was very anxious, he was a wonderful passenger in the
car. He was pacing and panting,  I'm sure anticipating what his next stop would be.  Like many Boxers,
this boy did not do well in the shelter- life is way too stressful for a sensitive breed like this boy.  I don't
have a lot of history on Toby, but I do know that he lived in harmony with another dog.  We also know
he was surrendered to the shelter as his owners were going through a divorce.

In the less than  24 hours he has been here, the look in his eye has changed.  He has a softer look this
morning and actually found a stuffed toy to play with. He was just adorable .... he would toss it in the air
and catch it.  Toby seems to just beam when you tell him what a good boy he is :)  He spent the night in
his crate next to one of the other fosters and did not make a peep......... settled right down.  He saw the
cat............ appeared to have NO interest what-so- ever.  Toby seems to be a little finicky about his
food. It seems that this is a boy who was given a lot of table food-( he has the waist line to prove it ).
This morning he had Canidae dry food accompanied by roasted chicken.  Well, he picked the chicken
out and then proceeded to  flip his bowl around the crate. His expression was something like  HEY ,
LADY.WHERE'S THE MEAT ???

Toby will have  some adjusting to do......... his food is much better for him then ours :)

My last couple of fosters have been youngsters. It's nice to have a mature 3 yr old gentleman.  I'm not
chasing him to pull the roll of toilet paper out of his mouth.  He has not had one accident and so far is
the perfect guest.  This boy will not be around long !!
