SOPHIE - Laila
Boxer Mix
UPDATE 3/31/08 -   Laila (formerly Sophie) is doing as well as ever. She and Cassius are still getting
along great. They have yet to have even one "word". They just play and play out in our yard.
With the warmer weather coming, we will get to the park more often. We go every Sunday morning
now, and my husband just started a 4-day work week, so he will be able to take them during the day
once a week as well. I like to try to get them at least a day or 2 during the week as well after work. We
always walk around the neighborhood - at least daily.
Laila's watery eyes have seemed to clear up after the ointment. And her lump is staying as is.
Laila is doing better on the walks with the pulling, but she still needs some reminding! We considered
doing the CGC test this past weekend at our vet's office, but I think she still needs a little more work
with strangers. Unfortunately, when I walk the dogs early in the morning before work, there is no one
out to get her accustomed to other people. She does great at the park. I think she feeds off of Cassius,
as the park is his favorite place!
We are all very excited for the warmer weather for more and longer walks! :)

UPDATE 11/2/07 - Laila (Sophie) continues to do great! She has truly become a member of our
family. She and Cassius are getting along great!! They play and play!
We did have a scare this week. We found a lump on her belly earlier this week. We went to the vet
today and was told that it was just a hernia. The lump is in the area where she was spayed. The vet
thought either a stitch dissolved too fast or there was just a little too much space between stitches. She
said that she was not able to push the tissue back in so she thinks it has healed over already and should
not be a problem. We will just have to keep an eye on it to make sure it does not get bigger.
We also had the vet check out her eyes as she has had watery eyes since she came home to us. The vet
said she does not have conjunctivitis and that her corneas look clear. She thought it might be some extra
cilia (sp?) that is irritating her eyes or perhaps blocked tear ducts. She gave me some antibiotic cream
to try on her eyes for a week to see if that works. If not, we will have to consider seeing an
ophthamologist to check on the cilia. Apparently, the doctor can "zap" it off. Guessing that means by
laser. Hopefully we do not have to go that route. Hopefully the cream works.
We will see how it goes.
Other than that, she is doing great. She plays well, she eats even better and she is getting more confident
by the day. Sometimes it is hard for me to see as she is completely comfortable with me. She is still a
little shy around my husband if he stands up. She is much better when he squats down to her level.
Both dogs did great at Halloween with the doorbell ringing every 5 seconds!! They both just sat behind
me with their festive Halloween scarves on and watched the kids.
She is definitely going to need some formal training. I thought I could work with what I know, (we had a
trainer for our first dog) but she is still a "puller" when we walk and she jumps up on me whenever she
sees me. Only me though. She has mastered "sit" and will do "down" for food. She is getting pretty
good with "paw", too. She is learning "place" (a type of "stay") but I think she mostly just copies
Cassius, our male. ha, ha! :)
We will be contacting the trainer shortly. We will do private lessons with him, then she will be eligible to
be a part of the free group classes. I think that will really help her the most.
More updates later!

UPDATE 10/3/07 - Laila has adjusted really well to our home. She has been making herself at home!!
She is sweet and she follows our male, Cassius, around everywhere! She needs to be next to him, even
touching him all the time. She even wants to sleep with him. Like a typical older brother, he is not happy
about it, but he tolerates it! We are getting her to stay in her crate at night, with the door open, so he
can get some rest!! (LOL)
We have taken her to the local dog park and she does great. It is an off-leash park, and we have let her
run free, but we keep her leash attached to her collar. She mostly just follows Cassius around. But, she
will run up to dogs coming our way to say hello. It is nice to have the leash on her so we can grab it if
we need to. It won't be long before we can take that off.
Her health has been good so far. Her coat is getting nice and shiny after more than a week on Canidae.
We are still trying to track down her distemper and bordedella shot information and also whether or not
she was tested for heartworm and what the results were. (* A tip for owners picking up their new dogs
- be sure to get ALL the information from the foster family when you get the dog. It is very difficult to
track this information down after the fact!)
We have not enrolled in training as of yet. We did do training with our male and we know a lot of the
obedience training skills. She knows "sit", "down" and we are working on "paw" and "place". She also
does the signature boxer wiggle when we get up in the morning and when I get home from work.
She has been a great addition to our family. She is everything we hoped she would be!! It was so worth
the wait! She has even brought our shy male out of his shell a bit. And he is eating better, too, knowing
she will gobble down his food if he doesn't eat it fast enough!
Stay tuned for more updates...

9/22/07 - Sophie has been adopted!

9/11/07 - Well sweet little Sophie has settled in quite nicely!!! She is soooooo sweet loves everyone
and everything. Cats other dogs and goats!! I do suggest she goes to home with another dog as she
really enjoys being with them. She loves my male sooo much, she litterally lays on top of him, he doesn't
like but he deals well with it!!She is learning her name and was spayed last week. I'm not sure if she
knows how to bark as I have never heard her when the other dogs bark she runs. She adores my kids
and gets along well with the cat. If you would like to meet Sophie she will be at the Oxford County Fair
this coming Saturday the 15th of september. She is looking forward to meeting and greeting and giving
lots of boxer kisses!!!!

9/5/07 - Sophie is a boxer mix that was a stray to a shelter we work with, along with her brother
Raven. Thanks to Steven & Grace & her husband, we were able to get them both in this past weekend!
She was there for about 6 weeks with what appears to be her brother (they look so much alike, with
just different heads & he is bigger). They both appear to be about 18 months old & Raven definitely
was closely bonded to his sister. We were sad to have to split them into different foster homes, but we
did not have room for 2 in one foster home at this time.
