SMUDGE
UPDATE 7/1/08 - At last, Smudge met his non-fur brother, Nick, who has been serving in the military
overseas since before Smudge arrived.  Well, we got home after midnight because of flight delays, it
was dark, Nick was dressed in his uniform still and he is 6'6" tall.
When we got home, we let the dogs out while Nick was unloading his gear from the truck... Smudge
showed he is quite a watchdog with a lot of heart.  He ran up to him barking like a crazy dog... took
one look "UPWARD" at this giant.. took 3-4 steps back then charged forward full steam ahead.  He
really was impressive.  Smudge's sister did not recognize Nick at first glance either.  But as soon as we
advised all was well...and there was no threat, Smudge decided his heart could start beating again and it
was ok to breath. I still lol thinking about this.
Smudge has identified him as family and Nick is allowed to come and go with out any problems.
Welcome home Nick.

UPDATE 4/17/08 -   Smudge and I completed our dog obedience class.  We will mailing a copy of our
diploma to SCBR.  He wanted to clown around during our final test.  All the parents of the typically
"naughty" dogs thanked Smudge for drawing attention away from them for a change. He got a good
final grade.
Smudge has really settled in.  He is very relaxed and knows all the household routines and rules. He
knows when I'm pulling in the drive from work, he is always waiting in the window.
We had the entire backyard fenced in last month.  With 2 boxers running around, rough housing...it was
the only way to go.  He does love to play with his boxer sister.  He understands how to play  frisbie, he
jumps up to get it.. but just cant open his mouth to grab it.  He jumps up and stops it with his body, and
boy does he have one heck of a verticle leap!! I have never seen a dog that can jump this high!

UPDATE 3/23/08 -  It's been over 3mos since Smudge joined his forever family.  He has totally
claimed us as his family.  All seperation anixiety is gone.  He knows which windows gives him the best
views when we are outside or leaving. What time to start looking out for us to come home from work.
He is always in the window when I get out of the car.  He knows the rules.  Not to touch really old cat's
(17years old & blind)food dish until he walks away, then it's clean up time!!
We have invested in having the entire back yard fenced in.  Having Two-2year old boxers who love to
run and chace each other, they sometime forgot where the property lines are.  Now, there are no
worries.  They seem to sense they can play even harder... They can watch the neighbors without
interuption.
Our required dog training class is going very well.  We are over 1/2 way done.  He's already been thru
dog training before, this is just our bonding time.  I joke and call the class, "Mommy & Me Class".  My
husband comes & watches so he will be on the same page on what commands mean what.  (he gets a
kick out of the other dogs, at 6mos they are all legs & eager to please) The other dog owners are
getting exposed to a large boxer and how gentle he is.  There is a little dog named Dewey who was
rescued from "Black Dog Rescue".  They focus on Ohio & Indiana as we've learned their pounds kill
twice a week.
This was our 3mos update.  We are well adjusted and the way it should be.  :0)

UPDATE 2/14/08 -  Smudge continues to fit right in with our family.  He had a little seperation anxiety
when we left for work, when one of us went out to the garage or even when my husband would snow
blow the driveway.  He would sit by the window and cry. With time it's getting less and less.  He's
realizing that we are coming back.
We had our first obedience class tonight.  He does not need it... I do.  He did everything right the first
time, we did it a couple times more so the teacher did not think we were "snobs".  Then he laid down to
rest while the rest of the dogs barked & snapped at each other.  He listens better then our female boxer
Penelope.  She is a princess... if she does not want her nails trimmed she books out of the room &
waits around the corner.  She will listen to me while I trim Smudges nails... I always say when we are
done we can get a treat... she will book right back in to get the treat only to realize that only Smudge
gets the treat..then....and only then will she allow me to trim her nails.  Smudge sets a good example for
Penelope... shes a wonderful dog.. just a princess. We are so glad that Smudge finally found us to make
the family whole :0)

UPDATE 1/20/08 - Just a quick update my husband & I adopted Smudge just before Christmas.. we
drove to Maine from Buffalo/Rochester, NY area.. He is well worth the ride. He is was 2 years on on
12/14/07.. he is only a few months younger then our Boxer Penelope. Great fit.. not really any
adjustment needed... once he figured out the food will always be there, he stopped eating everyone
elses food... both boxers sleep in our queen bed since day 1... someone they fit without me getting a
back ache. This was a good decision. :0) He totally fits in our home, well behaved..The only minor
problem(and this is very minor) we have is a little seperation anxiety, as one might expect.. we are
technically the 5th home he's been in to include his fosters(also his last home..forever). His crate is next
to our other Boxers so his whining has got to be us leaving. Our dog training class starts in Febuary and
they stated they will cover this... but in the meantime, any suggestions.. Right now I don't make a big
deal about leaving..so he does not get worked up, we have the same routine every day... perhaps just a
little time is needed so he will realize, yep, they're coming home and not leaving me?

UPDATE 12/30/07 -   My husband Mike & I (Laura) have adopted Smudge. We drove up to Maine
overnight with our boxer Penelope and non boxer Rancher who is a cocker/chow mix. Quite the
adventure. The dogs behaved quietly all the way home, 11hr ride! Many potty breaks and ginger snaps
as I learned from the SCBR community, helps to prevent car sickness. As soon as we got home and let
them out of the SUV.. it was play time.  Smudge fits right in with EVERYONE.  He has met our
daughter in law and my entire family except our son who is currently stationed in Korea.  I explained to
Smudge that he is finally home, sometimes you have to take a few detours along the way in life because
you need to meet certain people that help make you the person(boxer)that you are. The way he calls
"dibs" on the couch when we settle in for tv each night... he "gets it"....he's home.
Smudge sleeps with us and our boxer Penelope, we all fit nicely. He's a very smart boy.  He listens and
learns quickly. He loves mealtime, I have to keep an eye on him so he does not become "Pudge"
instead of Smudge.. but as much as he likes to play outdoors, should not be a problem. We have a
large backyard.  Smudge and our boxer run, romp and tear up the turf just like horses. He acutally
bounces quite high when he he's playing, he reminds me of T-I-G-G-E-R from winnie the pooh!! Being
a big boy some might be intimidated by his wanting/needing to play. I enjoy watching him, He is very big
but also graceful. Smudge likes the cats and is not bothered by the rabbit, he leaves the cage alone. We
have checked on our obedience classes, the next schedule is not yet posted. They should know the
dates just after the first of the year.
Will keep you posted.

12/15/07 - Well my little Smudgie got adopted this morning & is headed for NY with his new boxer
"sister", who was very sweet also, and a"brother"-not a boxer. Laura & her husband were very nice &
fell in love with Smudge immediately. Not hard to believe as he was such a sweet dog!! I will miss him
sleeping on the other half of my bed and following me all around. Smudge was such a good, laid back
dog for only being 2 years old. He got a great big marrow bone yesterday for his birthday & to keep
him busy while I was at work. I will miss him terribly as he was such a sweetie!! My blessing to his new
family & prayers for a safe journey back to NY. I love you Smudgie!!!!

12/4/07 - My thanks to Julie for bringing Smudge from So.Portland to Augusta for me to pick him up.
What a great dog!! Smudge, cute as a button, climbed into the back seat, laid down, and went to sleep.
The drive back home always seems faster than the ride down. I have to say what a pleasant surprise
Smudge is for such a young boy! I expected him to "mark his territory", but he hasn't even thought
about it-much to my delight! He doesn't jump up on you, is totally potty trained, hasn't bothered my
cats, who have kept their distance,
is very calm for his age, and does not appear to have separation anxiety. I left him alone today while I
was at work for 6.5 hours. I did put the trash behind closed doors to eliminate any possible trash
picking, but came home to a happy dog! He sleeps with me and keeps me warm & is the usual "velcro"
boxer. He's been very gentle meeting older people. I haven't seen my 4 1/2 year old grandson because
of the snowstorm, but that will be the final test. He didn't seem to crazy about the snow. He does his
business and is ready to come back
in the house. Smudge is a very kissy boy and is very gentle taking treats. I'm sure he'll be adopted
quickly. Some lucky person will be blessed with a VERY good boy! I'm very thankful for his company
for as long as I'm blessed to have him with me.

12/1/07 - Smudge was surrendered back to rescue today.  His owner said their other dog is very
nervous and neurotic and was causing Smudge to start becoming that way.  He was starting to get
jumpy and nervous about things like she is all the time, so they felt it was best for him to find another
home.  They loved him and said he was wonderful with the kids too.

Updates soon from his foster home.
.

UPDATE 9/27/07 - Smudge just completed his 7 week obedience course. He did really well. I cant
beleive how smart he is. We are still dealing with his 'biting " the kids feet during play. I had the trainer
come to the house for 2 hrs- I am hoping this can be resolved. He loves to ride in the car and play in the
hose. He got his first indoor bath and he didn't seem to mind. I have never had a white dog before and
boy does he get dirty!!

UPDATE 8/28/07 - Smudge continues to do well. He is doing his training class and has finally learned
down-that was a hard one for us.I make him specially prepared hot dog treats and he really goes for
those. He is just a big goofy guy and we love to have him around. Chante seems to actually like him
now-before she seemed as though she was tolerating him. It is funny to watch the two of them running
circles in the backyard. The nice thing is that they are exhausted when they are done. He loves his
Canadae and is still a very messy eater. He is a great addition to our family and really feel that we gut
lucky and got a great dog.

UPDATE 7/27/07 - Smudge is doing well and has certainly made himself at home. I feel like he has
been here forever. He has a wonderful personality and the kids love him. Chante our 4 yr old female
boxer at first did not care for him but now will even share her blanket in the den. He will begin his
obedience training next week. We are working on down and he really knows sit now. He also walks
well on the leash. He is a big goofball- hates the bath but loves to be in the sprinkler. When I shut the
hose off he actually will go up to the hose reel and pull on the hose until he has it pulled out halfway
across the yard. Now he needs to figure out how to turn it on-lol!We also found out that he does not
like brooms or vacuums. I brought him down to my daughters lacrosse game and the kids were
throwing a stick for him and he looks like a great big white rabbit -jumps straight up into the air about 3
feet. There are a few things that he needs correction with but is an awesome dog and once he finishes
his training will be the perfect gentleman. He loves his canadae and as his foster mom Dot told us- he is
the messiest eater I have ever seen.
Thanks for giving us the opportunity to adopt Smudge.

UPDATE 7/10/07 - just thought that I would introduce myself to the list. My name is Chris and along
with my husband Frank and two children Dakota and Hunter adopted Smudge. He has adjusted very
well since arriving about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Its like he has been here forever. I also have a 4 yr old
female Chante that at first did not care for him , but now are buddies. The two have a ball playing
together and the kids adore him. Chante does not like to play ball so they are happy that Smudge does.
We had one major fight on day 2 and no issues since then. I am actually surprised because with her
personality I thought it would take longer. He definatley needs some training which we are signing up
for. He loves his canadae and of course treats. He is a real mush. We have only one issue that we are
dealing with and that is he bites the kids ankles when they are playing. He is finding out that we do not
tolerate that. Im surprised that his former owners allowed that. He has definately found a place in our
hearts. A special thanks to Dot for all her help.

6/27/07 - Smudge has been adopted!

6/16/07 - Smudge is coming out of his shell! He has challenged Abbi for my affections and I now have
to turn my back on him. He wants to really bond with me and we can't have that! He plays a lot with
Rose and tho' she recovers very quickly from a good romp outside, he is still taking a long time to get
his breath. He is
improving on a daily basis and should soon be on the quicker recovery list. As far as eating is
concerned, he has decided that the meals here are pretty good and is now anxious to get to his food
dish. Quite the
change from when he first arrived and had to be coaxed to eat. He now has a good appetite.

I have discovered that he will lay in bed until you tell him to get up! This morning, I got up and 4 other
boxers were waiting at the gate. He just looked and me, but when I told him to come he jumped right
up.He is a smart boy and really very good.

6/14/07 - "Just big dumb puppies" doesn't fit Smudge at all. He is very mature for his age.  He is calm,
doesn't jump on people, is not a rough player in the house,  allows anyone to take a bone or food away,
takes treats very gently and gentlemanly, is pretty respectful of the permanent residents and is not an
alarmist.

The only time he really lets loose is outside playing with Rose and Sam. Then he goes full tilt and is a joy
to watch. He is really enjoying playing chase with my guys and you can see the changes on a daily basis.
His wind and stamina are improving every day and he is having a ball. In the house he is a real calm guy!

6/13/07 - I think I have figured out a few things about Smudge. I think he must have been crated a lot
or wasn't given much exercise. At first he got very winded just going out for a few minutes. Now, he is
still getting winded, but it is daily taking longer for him to get tired, but he is recovering much quicker
that when he first got here.

I did crate him the first couple of nights. Now he sleeps upstairs with the rest of the gang. When we go
bowling tomorrow evening, he will have a test. I will leave him with Clara and Abbi loose in the family
room.
I do not expect to find any damage when I get home. He is too well behaved a guy for that!

He has a pretty poor appetite right now. I think that with exercise it will come around. He is also a very
slow eater and a bit messy. He does love to be with you and loves to cuddle.

6/10/07 - Smudge is an owner surrender, and a very sweet boy. He has lived with cats, a small child
and another dog. He is submissive to other dogs. He is also a very, very Flashy Fawn! (he's all white
with only fawn on his tail!).  He is housebroken, crate trained, and gets along well with the "gang of
four". He and my boxer Sam are in the "honeymoon phase" of their relationship. We shall see in a few
days how things are. This is a very nice young dog, and I don't believe he will be around long. Get your
