RAVEN - Boxer Mix => Reggie
|
UPDATE 7/9/08 - Reggie is such a sweet boy, the perfect addition to our family. He has passed his
Canine Good Citizen test and we completed 3 series of obedience classes (Puppy, Beginner, and
Advanced).
He loves the outdoors and has a particular obsession with long grass. He loves to chew it. Good thing
for him we have been slack with mowing the lawn :) He is an early riser and is good about waking
daddy to go out and pee since mommy isn't quite a morning person!
He has never been particularly 'kissy' like boxers can be, but we know that he has really come out of
his shell because now when he is excited he will kiss us. He has a weird thing with licking clothes and
feet (eew). At home we use a cable tie out so he can have some freedom in the yard. He has gotten
used to it and knows how far he can go before it pulls tight. We don't leave him outside alone, and I
don't think he would tolerate it if we tried for more than a second to run inside and get something. He
LOVES LOVES LOVES people and prefers to be with us at all times, particularly me as he is a
wicked Mama's boy :). Even at home he will stay near us and when he eats he will take a bite, come
back to us in the next room to check in, go back to the kitchen for another bite, and so on until he is
finished. He doesn't want to get left out of anything. We look forward to the rest of the summer as we
have plans to take him camping for the first time, to the ocean, and maybe to the lake if we can find a
local dog friendly beach area.
UPDATE 4/1/08 - I almost forgot to do this update, time is flying by. It seems like Reggie has been a
part of our family forever. Last night we finished our second obedience class and will sign up for the
next session to get into more advanced training. He loves his class and all of his doggy friends. He has
learned the basic commands (sit, down, stay, leave it, stand) and then some other extra ones. We were
very proud of him last night when he won the puppy push up contest! He did the most puppy push ups
(sit, down, sit, stand) in 1 minute. He did 10! The next class series will focus more on obedience even
with lots of distractions and unfamiliar environments.
This weekend we left Reggie for the night for the first time. We went to Boston and it didn't make sense
to take him with us. He got to go to doggie daycare for a day, and then home with our obedience
trainer for the night. The report was that he had a great time playing all day and snuggling with her
daughter all night. Since we came home he hasn't slept in his crate at night, he is now able to sleep on
the couch or his bed on the floor next to our bed. He used to always follow me (Tricia) around and
whine when he couldn't be near me. If I went to bed and Eli stayed up he would either crate himself or
pace around my bed crying. We are happy that he is feeling more safe and comfortable doing his own
thing. He is growing more secure with just walking around the house and playing where he likes. His last
bath he was hysterical. He kept drinking the water from the shower head and then started tilting his
head down so the water would run down his face so he could drink it. We can't wait 'til this summer to
see if he likes to swim. Though he may be the only boxer who was ever sad to see the snow melt. He
loves to eat it and play in it.
Last week he had loose poops and we had to put him on a bland diet. He is doing better and we
looking at whether it was his treats or if he is growing sensitive to his food. I am planning to transition
him to another food to see if it helps.
Nothing else to report. He is doing so well. I'd like to bring him to a BRAD when one happens near us
so that the people who helped care for him can see what a change has taken place. He is rarely skittish
and though he still prefers women he doesn't get scared and pee when men pet him and talk to him. At
obedience there are a lot of dogs, men and women and he doesn't show one ounce of insecurity.
UPDATE 2/27/08 - Reggie is doing great. We finished our obedience session and decided to sign
back up for another one with the same group. Reggie LOVES to go and play with all his friends and we
have come a long way with obedience. He is really consistent with sit, down, stay, leave it, and off.
We are working on coming when called consistently. He is a stubborn little boy! He is such a creature
of habit...we have to make sure to mix up the order of the commands we are practicing because he
remembers to order more than the actual command. For our final obedience class we had to teach him
a trick. We chose paw. Now whenever we are training and he doesn't know what we want him to do
he gives us his paw and looks at us with big puppy eyes just begging for his treat already!
He's officially registered with the town (thanks Danielle for your help getting his rabies certificate!). We
can't wait until spring comes and we actually have a yard to play in! With all of the snow storms it has
been really hard to get him enough exercise. There isn't a side of the road to walk on anymore and
when the driving is bad we are too afraid to have him out on the road. Fortunately we are able to let
him play when we go to our puppy class.
So I guess the official update is that he is very healthy, happy, and settled in as one of the family. We
have been letting him sleep with us on the weekends and he couldn't be happier. The first few times in
bed he was restless, but now he snuggles right up and snores away. In the morning we are slow to get
up and he will literally hug me; laying face to face with an arm around my waist. Seriously he has no
idea he is my dog and not my boyfriend ;-)
UPDATE 1/25/08 - Reggie has settled in very well. In the past week or so he has really come out of
his shell and is turning out to be quite a goof-ball! The introduction to our cats couldn't have gone
better. He pretty much ignores them, leaving them to get used to him at their own pace.
We crate him during the day and at night. We have tried letting him out of his crate while we sleep but
he paces and whines. We put him in bed with us a few times but he insists on laying between us, on the
pillow and under the blankets and snores so loudly I can't get any sleep...we only have a queen sized
bed, so it didn't work out very well. During the day I fell asleep on the couch one day to wake up and
find him chewing on one very tasty sherpa-lined leather slipper and oddly, a bite taken out of the
window sill...so we don't think he is ready for much unsupervised house time yet. Other than these
puppy chewing incidents he has been a perfect angel and can occupy himself for long periods of time
with his variety of toys. He loves stuffed toys, but they don't last long and we have to make sure he
doesn't get anything with plastic eyes....cause they are the first thing he chews off. I've had to go
mouth-fishing for a couple of small items already.
We have done 3 weeks of our 7 week obedience puppy class. He is pretty mellow at home with us
and the cats, but as soon as we bring him to obedience class and he gets to play with the other dogs he
hops around and literally leaps over the other dogs! He absolutely LOVES every dog he meets and it
is his favorite part of class. He has already learned sit, down, and has become great on the leash. We
are working on a consistent come and stay. He is learning really fast, especially now that he has figured
out there will be a treat for a reward. :)
The week we got him he had some diarrhea. We initially thought it was the stress of moving, but within
a couple of days we discovered he had worms. After being treated for roundworms and tapeworms he
seems to be parasite free and everything is coming out just they way it's supposed to, hehe. A week
after he moved in we had him weighed at the vet and he was 61.9 pounds. Since then I think he has
gained a little bit of needed weight and he looks perfect.
We've been taking him to different people's houses -with and without other dogs- and he does fantastic.
He is a very nice house guest and since he is so submissive with more dominant dogs he doesn't mind if
they are initially a little territorial. He is very good at reading when to give a dog some space and when
it's okay to sniff and play.
He is the sweetest little (well, not so little) baby and just loves to cuddle. Everyone who meets him
thinks he is 'the coolest dog'. We agree. We are so appreciative to everyone who helped get our baby
into rescue so he could join our family.
12/24/07 - Raven has been adopted!
11/21/07 - Well raven has settled in quite nicely!!! he is such a sweet boy!! He is still scared of loud
noises and quick moving people but he has improved 100%!!!! He needs to be with another dog as he
feels more comfortable. Raven deserves a loving home with people that appreciate all the love he has to
give!!! He is soo affectionate if you let him warm up to you, could you be the right home to bring him
completely out of his shell???
9/22/07 - Raven is doing very well and is slowly settling in. He loves being with the 3 boxers here, so
much he drives them nuts as he always wants to be next to them! LOL I have found he loves any type
of balls & will entertain himself. He does need the more indestructible type though as he can chew right
through the softer ones.
Raven is a very quiet boy & not a mean bone in his body. He is still nervous around me or if I look at
him, but he seems to really want to learn what human attention and love is. If I am not looking, he will
come near me and lean either lean against me or touch me. I really think he just was outside with his
sister and did not get very much human contact. I know with some time and love, he will come around
as his sister, Sophie, had made a huge improvement in a more busy household with kids.
9/4/07 - Raven is a boxer mix that was a stray to a shelter we work with. Thanks to Steven & Grace &
her husband, we were able to get them both in this past weekend! He was there for about 6 weeks
with what appears to be his sister (they look so much alike, with just different heads & she is smaller).
They both appear to be about 18 months old & Raven definitely was closely bonded to his sister. We
were sad to have to split them into different foster homes, but we did not have room for 2 in one foster
home at this time. Raven has met my cat and the 3 other boxers in the house & was very good with
all. He was very submissive with the males here who both had to show him briefly that they were
bosses over him! He gave right away,
without a fight. He is very clingy right now with me & nervous about the changes, but so far he has
been nothing but nice & no growls or snapping, just shy & likes to lean against me or go into his crate
for comfort. He will need to be neutered & get his shots updated, along with some time to relax &
adjust. Then Raven will be looking for his new home. More updates soon.
