PENNY
UPDATE 1/17/08 -   Penny is such a nice girl. We love her here but she tends to need a lot of attention.
When we leave her she has a tough time. She has broken out of her crate so many times it's not even
funny. Now we have a crate inside of a crate, hooked onto a chain, with 5 different pad locks to make
sure she doesn't break through. So far it seems to be working. She can't quite get the leverage that she
was able to get when the crate was on the floor and a bit larger. We also notice that she is extremely
nervous around new people and does not do well at all with dogs, however; she does get a long well
with my in-law's Boxer, Dempsey.
She completed her training certificate at PetSmart about a month ago. She had a tough time in training,
though. The environment was a little too stimulating for her. We love Penny but she definitely has some
special needs.
We are doing the best to keep her content and it breaks our hearts that she has such a hard time being
alone. I'm hoping that she will adapt more, in time. I have noticed that she seems to do well with the
"Kong" in her crate while we are gone.
My son absolutely loves Penny. She gets so excited when he comes home from school, too. It's really
cute!
I'll keep you posted.

UPDATE 12/4/07 -   Penny is still doing well. She only has one more class and then she will complete
her training. We've found that Penny definitely has problems with other dogs. She seems to be very
nervous and overprotective when in their presence. She also is an escape artist. The major problem we
have run into is her getting out of her crate and getting into mischief. She also jumps in the crate and it
moves and then she grabs whatever she can...the carpet, tableclothe, couch. It just seems like she gets
very anxious when she's alone. Otherwise, all is going well with her. She is wonderful with my son
despite his increasing activity level and she also gets along pretty good with the cats.

UPDATE 10/26/07 -   Penny is doing just great. She has bonded with the family nicely. Mostly with
me, though. She follows me around the house all day and she is so snuggly. She really is my best friend.
She's also great with kids. She plays with my son gently despite his roughness.
I have to say that she is well trained. She comes when you call her, sits upon request and will sit when
she is put on a leash, she doesn't jump on people, I easily taught her to lay down and give me her paw,
she waits her turn to come into the house and seems to be looking for your command. She is rarely ever
alone; however, when she is at home alone she's good. We have not had one accident since we've
gotten Penny.
Every day my son goes to school I take Penny for the ride and then we go for a walk on the bike trail.
Sometimes we go to my in-laws who have a male boxer and she plays and runs around with him. The
cats aren't particularly pleased with her, though. She loves to chase them around the house but they
seem to be getting more comfortable with each other.
I have signed Penny up for obedience training at Petco. She will actually be starting tomorrow. I really
don't think she needs the training but it will be good to socialize her more with other dogs.
As for Penny's eye, the vet thinks that her eye has a scar on it instead of an ulcer. BTW I was curious if
she had any vaccinations while she was rescued other than rabies. Can someone get back to me on this?
We really are just so pleased with Penny and feel that we have been blessed! Thank you!

UPDATE 10/1/07 -   Penny continues to be a delight. She is excellent with my 3 year old, too. The cats
and Penny have not yet become friends; however, they do seem to be curious about each other. Penny
and I take daily walks together on the bike trail that we live off of.
We went to the vet last week and got some ointment for her persistent eye ulcer. We have an
appointment tomorrow to evaluate her eye further.
We think Penny is wonderful and are feel that we are so lucky to have her!

UPDATE 9/22/07 - Penny is doing awesome. She is such a great girl! She has adapted so well to our
family and routine. We have discovered she is an unbelievable escape artist. She managed to get out of
her double locked crate by bending the bottom portion. I'm getting the distinct impression that she
doesn't really like to be crated. She confidently jumps our bed and snuggles up as if that is where she is
supposed to be. She follows me around where ever I go and is always ready for love. She really is a
doll; however, today when she was relieving herself she decided to roll around on the ground and got
herself all messy in her dog mess. I had to give her a good bath to clean her up. She was cooperative,
though. We are so pleased to have her in our family. We absolutely adore her.

9/16/07 - Penny has been adopted!

9/5/07 - It has been a while since I have reported on Penny. A lot has happened since we last "talked."
Penny and Maizy decided that they were going to go a step beyond being just being civil to one another
and become play pals. Everyday they have been tumbling through the house. We call them the
"banger-sisters". LOL However both the dogs continue to be strong willed. Maizy is a rough playmate
and sessions have sometimes been cut short by the people in the house because they start to "sound
serious." Just today the two girls were walking on a leash side by side playing with a stick. I took my
eyes off them for a second and they started fighting. Maizy has two slashes across her nose and Penny is
sporting a new "war wound" on her neck. Penny is not one to back down from a fight. She often
appears to get excited by the high energy of the other dogs even if it's just play energy. She has a hard
time with doggie-stimulus.

Penny has been switched to a new crate made of a stronger gage wire. The lock is stronger and we
have found this one to be inescapable for our little Penny. She continues to spend nights in the crate as
she has not been consistent about being able to "hold it" until morning. Penny does not give us consistent
signals that she needs to go out. If you walk her regularly she is usually fine. If you forget you are liable
to have and accident on the floor. Penny does not soil her crate.

Penny continues to be VERY loving with the people in my house. My son play with her a lot. He likes to
wrestle with one of my dogs and he has found that Penny likes this too. She seems to realize that she is
playing with a Oyo and not another dog, my son never gets hurt. We really love Penny and know she
will make a one dog family very happy. Don't let the "tough" act fool you, she really is a keeper.

8/05/07- Well what a big day we had yesterday! I felt the time was right and we FINALLY let Penny
and Maizy out of their crates at the same time. Each was a bit apprehensive; Maizy eyed me the whole
time, while Penny was never more than 3 feet from me. They went 4 hours without a squabble and then
it was only when they tried to play with one another that their "signals" got crossed. Again today we
have done the same thing; everyone was walked together A-Okay!!! So far this morning Penny is
looking like the submissive of the two. Who would have guessed. We have also observed Penny
practicing more of the submissive acts like licking of the muzzle with our "alpha" female (Greyhound)
over the last week. Penny actually received a "wag" from our Grey last night in response to her
approach. So folks it seems that Penny is willing to learn the ropes of my house in order to have more
freedom. I guess she's not quite the "princess" we thought she was after all, but we won't tell her that.
This means she has potential in a multi-dog house-hold if her forever-family is patient with her. Penny
continues to be a bundle of love with the humans in the house. She has been slow to understand her
four-legged siblings (dog and cat) but she is coming around. We have nothing but wonderful things to
say about our "Henny-Penny." Once you inquire about her you'll be hooked too!

7/30/07- Penny is such a player! She has really come out of her shell and started to play with the
assortment of toys we have here. My son and she will play ball over and over without stop. She is so
good at bringing it back to him. Last night I took out all the odd toys my dogs hardly touch and
scattered them on the floor. It was a riot to watch her explore how each worked. Some of those toys
haven't been played with since my past foster Juelz left (he was such a player too). When it was time for
my son to go to bed, Penny and Nolan snuggled up and had some play-time together. (I love to watch
little kids and dogs interact so well together) Penny is so into him yet very gentle. I wished I had a video
camera (that I know how to use). Penny is really in love with people. She wants to be with us all the
time. She is devoted and will be a great family pet. So what is taking her forever family sooooo long?

7/25/07 - Penny is official a fixed female! She came back from the vets on Monday a little groggy, but
A-Okay. The vet was also able to look more thoroughly at her eye-ulcer and said the ointment is
working well. Good news for Penny she won't need any extra treatment. We also got a weight check
and Peggy has been doing her best to bulk up since being on the run. She is now a much healthier 52lbs.
Since last we checked in, Penny has gone on mini-vacation with my family and Bishop (the male dog).
She did well in the car, a 2.5 hr ride. Penny continues to be a great travel companion. Penny also settled
into her new surrounding quickly and did not have any trouble. We did take her crate with us. She
continues to dislike that part of her regiment and protests when you go to leave the house. Penny has
also turned out to be rather thrifty at "shifting" her crate and gathering objects from the surrounding area
around her crate and bringing them inside with her. She actually "stole" Maizy's blanket out of one crate
and somehow got in completely into her own while they were both crated side by side (initially 2 feet
apart). Penny is atypical in that she has formed a bond that is equally strong with both Chris and I, many
of our fosters have been real "mama dogs". Her excitement over the two cats has lessened considerably,
but she still does need reminders every few days to watch her manners. In all she has turned out to be a
very sweet dog. Her temperment still tends to make her snippy at times with our greyhound (female) and
as a result we have continue to keep her separated from Maizy as not to tempt the fates. Penny is
patiently waiting for her forever family. She is a little princess that would like nothing more than to share
a home with a family that will treat her as such. She has a treasure full of love (wiggles & kisses) to give
in return.

7/14/07 - Penny went to the Vet this morning. She rode again in the car very well. She is definitely a
seasoned traveler. She did well at the Office. The Vet said she could put on a few pounds....we knew
that. He also found that Penny had an ulcer on her eye which we are trying to treat with ointment, and a
chipped tooth which she appears to have had for some time, but doesn't appear to be causing any
trouble now, but will have to be dealt with in the future. Penny is scheduled to be spayed on the 24th of
the month. The Vet said she definitely has been through several heats if not had a litter or two.

At home Penny has started to feel more herself and is showing it! She has started to test her dominance
with both of my "friendly" dogs. On several occasions she has picked random squabbles with both.
When I brought this up with the Vet, he said that it was not uncommon in unspayed females. Whether
this changes after her surgery remains to be seen. With people she is a complete sweetie. It would be
great to see her go to a family that doesn't have another dog in the house. I can totally see her eating up
all the attention a family has to offer. She still continues to be very interested in my cats. Both cats find
this to be a game, but are growing tired of dodging her. Penny would not do well in a home that does
not have "dog savvy" cats, best scenario would be no cats at all.

Penny is a small bundle of love. She is not "over the top" when it comes to her energy level. I would call
her a mild/medium; perfect for a first time boxer family. She does very well with my 5 y/o son and does
not shy away from his loud behaviors. Plus, Penny being so small, can't seem to jump up on our bed at
night, so she is a doggie bed sleeper. (Chris just loves that one.)LOL. All around she is a great family
dog. You won't be disappointed.

7/11/07 - Penny is just the sweetest little lady I have ever met. She was one of two boxer that were on
the run in central Maine for almost two weeks before they were caught and found their way to SCBR.
Penny has spent the last week in a dog kennel waiting for a ride to her foster home Downeast. The
kennel owner said she was a very good guest; was nice towards the other dogs and was friendly with
him and his staff. On the ride home Penny curled up next to me and slept most of the way. She is an
excellent travel buddy. Upon arrival at the Doggie Den she met all the four legs. Bishop and Peggy just
love her and vice versa. Maizy..... she's being difficult and is in "doggie jail" while Penny gets acquainted.
Penny has also met the cats. She is curious, but respectful so far. My 5y/o son adores her and so far
Penny thinks he's alright to. I gotta tell ya....it's true what they say, great things come in small packages.
Penny's WONDERFUL!!!!!!! Pictures to come. Don't wait to get your apps in she'll go fast. Call
