is home more often (ex: at home parent, work at home, work opposite shifts, retired, etc)
UPDATE 2/20/10 - Nilla, Terry and I have moved to an active adult community in western New York
where pets are very welcome. Both dogs have adapted well to life without an electronic fence. To them
it means lots of walks on paths where they get the chance to follow interesting scents.
Nilla passed her Therapy Dog International test in November 2008 and visited a nursing home for
several months in 2009 until we moved. When the weather gets better we will go back to the nursing
home so she can get reaquainted with her many friends. The residents of the home are happy to see her
and she enjoys visiting with them.
Nilla and Terry continue to keep me amused with their antics and my walks with them are keeping me
in shape.
UPDATE 11/17/08 - It's been a while since I've updated you folks on how Nilla's doing. We've been
quite busy staying out of the way of workers helping to update our nice old house. The workers are
now gone and we are settling into our comfy house for the winter. Nilla finished her second season at
horse camp this summer and she did very well.
After camp a spot opened up at the new Petsmart in their advanced class. Nill did very well and
received her advanced training certificate. Two of us dog-handler teams from class got together a few
weeks after the classes and our trainer helped us review the test for Canine Good Citizen and Therapy
Dog International testing.
Well, last Saturday, 11/15 Nilla and I (Terry, the Golden went along for the ride) traveled to Fairport,
NY to take the combined CGC and TDI test. NILLA PASSED!! I was so nervous during the test that
it's a miracle I didn't pass out. The evaluator was very kind and talked me through the test. She was
very taken by Nilla's sweet disposition and feels she will make a very good therapy dog.
I have forms to fill out for both CGC and TDI before Nilla can actually go to nursing homes, etc. but I
hope maybe by Christmas she and I can get a visit or two in at a nearby facility. Next spring I figure
Terry will be ready as he is maturing nicely and wants to keep up with his sister.
I am so proud of Nilla. Her deafness did not get in her way at all. I again give thanks to her original
owner who helped Nilla develop her very sweet disposition.
UPDATE 1/13/08 - How time flies. It seems like yesterday when Nilla joined Terry (Golden) and me
and here it is her one year anniversary. Nilla is very much at home and is very fond of Terry. Both
continue to be comical and except for their separate walks each day, are inseparable.
Nilla loves schedules and tries to adjust them to her advantage. I feed them 3 times a day which I find
helps me to keep them in good weight; Terry needing to lose a little and Nilla needing to keep at her
present weight. So, their first meal is between 8 and 9, their second between noon and one and their
last after 3pm. Well, I've noticed lately a feeling that I'm being watched around 11:30. When I look up
there is Nilla, sitting patiently, looking at me with a sweet, intense look and right behind her is Terry
sitting tall and noble and looking hopeful. They proceed to attempt to con me into an early lunch with
tail wags and soulful looks. At first I thought they just wanted an extra run out in the backyard and so
I'd let them out. I swear that on the way out the door they had knowing smiles on their faces. They'd go
down the steps, circle aroung the picnic table and come right back up the stairs to sit in front of me, side
by side and looking at me with very sweet looks. I couldn't help but laugh; but told them they'd just
have to wait for lunch time.
Nilla hasn't started advanced obedience since the Petsmart where she and Terry go closed down and
was opening a new store in another area. Both the dogs have visited the new store and Nilla will
probably start her class in late January or early February. She walks very well on a leash now and also
goes into her crate at night on her own when I lead Terry to his. This is quite a change from when she
first came.
If I can figure out how to send pictures from my phone, I have some cute shots of Nilla and Terry that
I'll send along.
UPDATE 7/13/07 - Nilla has graduated from intermediate obedience and will start advanced
obedience after summer camp is over. Right now Nilla and Terry (golden retriever) are very busy
dudes. During the summer I work as Head Instructor for Sprucelands Equestrian Camp
(Sprucelands.com). It's an 8 week residential program for beginning to advanced riders. Consequently
Nilla, Terry and I are a little too busy to get to obedience classes.
Terry has earned the right to be off the leash at camp as this is his second summer in the program.
However I am always with him and I don't let him run free at the barn. Terry has had a lot of fun
showing Nilla the ropes. I keep Nilla on her leash because of her deafness but may let her run free with
Terry after camp is over and things have quieted down.
Nilla is very popular at camp for many reasons - because of her cuteness, her sweet disposition and her
very good manners. Everyone loves her soft head and they like to pat her. Nilla loves all the attention
and gives out many wet kisses.
She and Terry continue to be devoted to each other and have devised many games together that involve
running and chasing each other in circles. Then while they rest up from all the exercise, Nilla washes
Terry's big, golden ears, something that is hard for me to do because he won't hold still for me.
I'm thinking that if Nilla continues to do well with her training, I might see whether she can pass her
Canine Good Citizen test and the Therapy Dog International certification so I can visit nursing homes
with her. I'll take it a step at a time and see how she does. She likes meeting people and is more mature
than Terry. We'll see how things go.
I'll keep you advised on how she is doing.
UPDATE 4/13/07 - I can't believe it's been 3 months, and at the same time it seems as if Nilla has
always been here. She graduated from Beginner Obedience March 22 and begins Intermediate training
on April 17. My camera is now working and I've taken some nice pictures of Nilla and Terry (Golden
Retriever). Will send them as soon as I figure out how to do that.
I just got a vibrating collar for Nilla but haven't tried it out yet. She is very good with hand signals,
however if she's not facing in my direction then she doesn't know I'm signalling. In the house I can
stamp on the floor and she feels the vibration; outside I would like to use the vibrating collar as a
method of getting her attention. Nilla is so smart I'm sure she'll pick this up quickly. I'll keep you posted.
Meanwhile Nilla and Terry continue to keep me laughing at their antics.
UPDATE 3/13/07 - I'm happy to report that Nilla is doing very well. She continues to be cute and
cuddly and very, very smart. We have completed 6 of the 8 Beginner Obedience classes and she is still
the star student. I'll be signing her up for Intermediate classes as she is doing so well and seems to really
enjoy the instruction and the other dogs.
Nilla has gained another 3 pounds and needs only to gain another 2 or 3 pounds. The lick spot on her
leg is almost gone and her general health is very good.
She and Terry continue to be inseparable and are very sweet and funny together. As far as Willie, the
cat, goes, Nilla originally touched noses with him, the first couple of days she was here. However, as
time has gone on, Nilla's interest in Willie has become a bit too intense, so I have been keeping Willie
upsstairs, while Terry and Nilla have the run of the downstairs. This morning Willie had opted to be
downstairs and consequently quite a chase ensued. Willie moved surprisingly fast for a heavy cat and
escaped through his cat door. I have decided that Willie's confinement to the upstairs is now the rule of
the house. When the dogs are crated at night, Willie will have the run of the house. This situation does
not surprise me. The wonderful boxer I had many years ago simply did not get along with cats, so the
cats we had at the time always had escape routes available to them.
One of these days I'll get my camera up and running and send in some updated pictures of Nilla and
crew.
UPDATE 2/13/07 - Nilla is a true delight. She fit into the house and routine right away. She and Terry
(1 yr. old golden retriever) get along very well. Nilla explained to Terry that since she is older she gets
to be alpha dog and Terry said he is fine with that. They play together very well and keep me in stitches
with their antics. Nilla watches Terry to pick up cues about the routine around the house.
Nilla responds to many hand signals and is learning more signals every day. She started obedience class
on February 1 and has had two lessons. She is the star of the class (I may be a bit prejudiced)and likes
to show off her good manners.
On Monday, Feb. 5, the Invisible Fence trainer came out to help me train Nilla so that she can be loose
in the entire backyard, not just the smaller fenced in area. The trainer told me they have trained many
deaf dogs and that the training has been very successful. She did very well with her training and by last
Friday was let loose with Terry (both of course wearing their special collars). Again she took her cues
from Terry and is doing very well. I do leave her leash attached for now so that I can step in if I see her
getting too close to the boundary.
Nilla has been to the vet to get her shots updated and have a checkup. She is in very good health. Nilla
was given antibiotics for a lick spot on her right front leg which seems to be clearing up. She has gained
about 3 pounds in the past month and could stand to gain maybe another 5.
She loves her walks in the neighborhood and has made friends with a nice dog down the street. These
walks give Nilla special time alone with me (this is true for Terry too). Nilla and Terry are also good at
getting lap time with me, again one at a time.
I am truly thankful for this wonderful chance to add Nilla to my family. I couldn't ask for a nicer or
cuddlier friend.
1/13/07 - Nilla has been adopted!
1/4/07 - Nilla is doing really great here, she is a joy to foster. I have to say the longer we have her here
the more comical she is. However, she is not the most perfect dog, yet. She has her quirks. For
instance, every night we have to crate her at bedtime [she can be a restless sleeper at night]. She
doesn't like it and goes in with some resistance. Come bedtime, we pull her off the couch and she
knows what we are doing and she turns her body into dead weight. It's always drama to get her to bed.
We can't help but laugh at her when she does this. We pull at her to get her up and she turns herself
limp and makes us drag her in. She's like a spoiled little child who doesn't want to go to bed. Once in
the crate though, she is really good. No whinnying or anxiety.
Also walking her is such a chore. She is definitely not leashed trained. She pulls like a bull. She sniffs
everything in site. Back and fourth, and left and right with her head down the whole time. Like a vacuum
cleaner. She really gets into her nightly walks and makes sure she misses nothing. I am sure with time
the leash and Nilla will become great friends.
A family who loves to laugh and get washed by a boxer tongue every night would be perfect for Nilla.
Nilla truly is a character, you can't help but love her.
12/23/2006 - Nilla has settled down so much in her first week here. She now goes in her crate with
little effort. She has grown attached to my male boxer Jax. She respects him and no longer bothers him
to play as much. Jax is 10 yrs. old and doesn't play as much as he used to. However, Nilla can
sometimes get him in the mood, then playtime begins.
Nilla is truly wonderful to have in the house. She is completely house trained and lets you know when
she needs to go outside. She stands at the door and barks at it. If it is night time and she is outside
without Jax, we blink the backyard light to call her back and she comes running. She is learning hand
signals wonderfully, stares you in the face to see how serious you are. Sometimes I forget she is deaf.
Believe it or not she barks when she feels any unusual vibrations in the house, such as back door being
slammed from a visitor entering the house, or any lights blinking from outside, like cars pulling up by the
house. This makes her an excellent deaf watch dog. Very intuitive.
She plays with her toys a lot and prances around the house with stuffed animals dangling from her
mouth. She can be very comical. We love her so much. Her forever family will be blessed to have her.
She is a very showy white boxer with a gorgeous blue eye. her pictures do her no justice. You really
have to see this beautiful boxer in person. The family who may someday adopt her will be amazed at
just how gorgeous she really is. I'll send pictures soon.
12/16/06 - Did I mention Nilla has one beautiful blue eye and the softest fur ever? Her fur is so white
and clean and she feels like silk. She is extremely huggable and soft.
Because she is deaf she tends to constantly search and sniff us out. I feel she is thriving for attention.
She hates being alone. Although she is not destructive, she can get into things you may not want her too.
For example, she was left gated in the family room this morning for one hour and when we came back
in she was chewing on a silk Christmas bulb and knocked over our christmas village. Just little things,
which is not not bad for a one year old.
Getting her in a crate was difficult at first. However as we continue to do so, it is getting better, not
great, but better. No messes in her crate and no anxiety. She is good in the crate once you get her in.
Nilla is learning quickly who is boss and she also no longer tries to dominate my older boxer Jax. I feel
she just needs to be in constant comapny of her people family. She would make a great campanion with
someone who not only has another dog, but who can spend a lot of time with her. She is a lovable doll
and a peach to love.
Because of her deafness, she follows Jax in and around the house to the tee. She is housebroken but
had only had one small accident in the house due to being left alone in the family room [our fault]. I
since then kept her going outside more frequently and she does her business just fine.
She is a good little girl and I feel she is learning really fast where her place is in the house. I know she
only wants to please her people family members in return for hugs and kisses. Please consider this littile
girl for your famliy not only if have another dog, but if you want to drown in hugs and kisses. She is
extremely lovable and pleasing.
12/16/2006 - Nilla has arrived! She is an owner surrender. The owner is terminally ill and can no longer
care for her. She is a stocky healthy sweet girl. One year old and not "puppy" hyper at all. Being that
she is 98% white and she is deaf, she listens through hand signals. She does not like the crate though.
When we got her home she met up with my boxer Jax immediately, who's a senior, 10 years old, in the
back yard. They got along beautifully. Jax wanted to play and started to bark at her and she wasn't
responding. She was to eager to check her surroundings out instead. Once she did that she was eager
to sniff out Jax.
Later on in the evening we had some guests stop by [unexpectedly] and Nilla was happy to meet them.
However, Nilla wanted all the attention to herself and would push Jax out of the way from everyone.
She then tried to dominate Jax and Jax would not have it. A fight almost ensued but Nilla was quickly
put in her place by my husband through hand signals. Once she understood she may not dominate in the
house, she quickly calmed down. I believe she just got excited in her new surroundings.
I will update ASAP on her first night here. Stay tuned.
12/15/06 - I met Nilla Wafer and her mom at the shelter today. Her owner called the shelter a few days
ago as she is unable to keep her. Her husband is terminally ill and she is forced to move. Since Nilla
Wafer is deaf so the shelter manager called us immediately and made necessary arrangements to get Nil
directly into rescue knowing we could find her a great home.
Nilla is a very well cared for Boxer girl. She turned 1 year old in August. Nilla lived with another Boxer
(7 year old male) and is said to be great with other dogs and children. Nilla was around grandchildren
ages 3 months, 4,5 & 6 years. Her owner feels confident that she would do wonderfully in a home with
small children. My 4 year old went to get her with me today and she was fabulous with him. I also
stopped home to pick up my daughter, cousin and sister before meeting Nilla's foster mom and she was
super friendly with both of them. Since Nilla's foster mom was stuck in traffic I dropped everyone off at
the mall then went to meet her. Well as soon as all the kids got out of the car Nilla Wafer started
whining she wanted to badly to stay with them it was very cute.
She did not live with cats but she showed almost no interest in those she saw at the shelter. As a matter
of fact she laid down right in front of a cage full of kittens and took a little power nap. Judging by her
actions I would say she could do well with kitties.
Nilla's owners always called her Nil or Bean (this came from owner saying her little fawn spots look like
Jelly Beans). Nilla is in very good health and was obviously very well loved. I honestly cannot say
enough about her temperament. She is awesome!! I promised her owner we would find her a great
home with another dog to play with and a securely fenced yard. Could her new home be with you?

That is my friend Athena on the left, she got adopted. She says it is so cool to have a new family to call your very own. I wonder when mine will come along?
