MAYBELLE
UPDATE 7/9/08 - Hello fellow SCBR members,
I am very sad to report that MayBelle has crossed the bridge. We only had her with us since last fall!
As many of you know, we adopted her at about 10 years old, and she developed some health
problems, including terrible arthritis and liver cancer. We did as much for her as we could, and finally it
was not fair to her to keep her stuggling on. She had a rather quick downturn and went peacefully.
Maybelle was a wonderful addition to our family and each day we miss her when she is not there to
greet us at the door and when we realize that no one is following us around the house and even when
we don't have to take all the food off the counter before bedtime :) We miss her tone-deaf bark and her
5am requests for breakfast!
Maybelle rests permanently under her peach tree in the back yard. It may be a while, but there is no
question that another senior boxer is in our future. I really have a soft spot for the elders-- they are soo
quirky and they are just my speed. Thank you SCBR for blessing us with another golden girl!

UPDATE 3/19/08 - MayBelle is still trucking along. Since my last post she has had some medical
complications, though. She has lost some of her teeth, but still manages alright with her food. We have
kept her arthritis from bothering her too much by sticking to her vet's recommendations for food and
exercise and supplements. The warmer weather helps, too. MayBelle also appears to have had a small
stroke, as her rights jowls are paralyzed. This has caused her to drool from that side of her mouth, but
it's pretty easy to catch it with a cloth before it hits the floor or anyone gets slimed. Lastly, she has
developed some lumps, one of which the vet is concerned may be cancerous. Basically, MayBelle is an
old gal who is showing her age (and then some). She is very sweet and loyal and helps keep our
household on a steady routine. We are really blessed to haver been able to provide her a good
retirement home for her late life. Despite her ailments, MayBelle shows little evidence of slowing down
and no decline in her spirits. She keeps up with her boyfriend across the street, and is always interested
in making new friends, human or dog, and is always hopeful for a ride in the car, weather it's ours or
someone stopped on the street!

UPDATE 11/24/07 -   Hello all! MayBelle is doing great. She is getting oodles of love and perhaps a
little too much treats :) Last month MayBelle was discovered to be deaf. We knew she was slightly
hard of hearing, but we thought she was just rather stubborn. Nope! So we were able to get her into a
training class that has taught us hand signals to use with her, which has been great. She graduates next
Tuesday.
MayBelle is very loyal and follows us around the house all the time and looks to us for cues. MayBelle
does not like to play with us or with other dogs, but she loves to be around other dogs and follow them
around. It's always great when we can go walking with another dog in the woods near our house
because then we can let her off the leash and she will run along with the other dog. By herself, we could
never let her offleash, because unless she is looking right at us, she has no idea we are calling to her.
MayBelle is also now on a special diet because she has a muscular degenerating disease. With enough
exercise and the right nutrients, we have been able to keep it mostly at bay.
MayBelle has a boyfriend now who lives across the street, an American Bulldog. The two of them are
content to sniff each other and walk around the yard smelling and peeing together. Aah, love.
For Halloween, Maybelle entered the costume contest at the local pet store. She was a home-made
bumblebee, complete with stinger, and won third place and a bag of treats which seemed to offset her
humiliation :)
Overall, we have developed a nice routine around here and have successfully adjusted to each other.
I'd like to send some pictures of MayBelle so everyone can see how great she looks, but I'm not sure
how to do this. We are starting to talk about adopting a second friend, and we think MayBelle would
benefit from having a companion she could follow around and take cues from, but are not ready to do
this quite yet.
Happy Thanksgiving!

9/07 - Maybelle has been adopted!

7/13/07 - Maybelle has been with us here at the Thunder and Lightening Boxer Retreat for just about a
week today. She has settled right in and made herself at home. That is what I love about the mature
boxers, they know how to settle in and just enjoy life. Now, when we picked her up at the shelter they
said she was found as a stray. I'm not sure how that happened because she seems to find the nearest
door and ask to go in no matter where we happen to be. LOL. She walks excellent on a leash and is
ready to go for a walk whenever you ask. I have to tell you the other day I had to take her to the vets
office and leave her for the day for her Cushings test. The good news is the test was negative she
doesn't have cushings, but that is not the cute part of the story. I must say the look she gave me when
they led her out back just said it all. She looked at me as if to say you are leaving me too? It really
broke my heart, I told her I would be back but the look of defeat in her eyes when I left nearly brought
me to tears. Can you imagine being this age and having your family that you have probably lived with
your whole life taken from you, and not understanding what is happening? Anyway when I got back to
pick her up they had me wait in a room while they went to get her. They brought her in and it was an
instant change that came over her face. It was almost like looking at a child on Christmas morning. Her
look just said it all, You came back for me!...... We left the office at a run she was ready to head to the
car. She ran right to the correct vehicle in a parking lot that was full. Jumped in the car ( I drive a
suburban, this girl is spry) and was ready to go. On the way home I had the windows down about half
way. I looked in the back seat and she has her feet on the arm rest with her head and shoulder out the
window just enjoying the breeze. She looked so happy, her jowls and ears just flapping in the wind
sniffing everything in the air. We got home she jumped out of the car and ran to the door. As soon as
we got inside she began to prance and bounce around. You could just tell she was so happy to be out
of a kennel. I took a picture of her when we got here just because I wanted everyone to see that pure
happiness on her face.

Now if you want a great companion who is really happy and grateful for every day Maybelle is the girl
for you. She really loves to ride in the car and can cuddle on the couch with the best of them. Can you
give Maybelle that retirement home she so greatly deserves?

7/5/07 - Hi all,  Here is my new foster girl her name is Maybelle.  She was a stray to the shelter.  I think
she is one of the oldest looking boxers I have ever seen.  She was once fawn but is truely now mostly
gray all over with a little light brown color here and there.  LOL.  She seems to be pretty healthy and
happy to be out of the shelter although she let us know last night she  does not like sleeping in a crate.
She finally gave up barking and resigned herself to it but she wasn't happy when I let her out this
morning she gave me a look of pure disgust. LOL.  I'll do a write up on her later when I get to know
her a little. box top info to come.
