4/11/07 - Lakota is doing very well & has found his favorite toy out of the dozens to chose from in my
house is an empty 2-liter soda bottle! LOL He carries one around so proudly & will chase it like a
crazy nut if it rolls & tries to get away from him. Such a silly boy! :) I have found out recently though
that Lakota is going to need to be placed with older kids. He bites my hand when trying to get a toy out
of my hand or if I hold onto a ball too long that I am about to throw for him. He doesn't do it hard to
break the skin, but he does it like a puppy would & again, he doesn't realize he has big teeth & a strong
jaw. At first I just thought he was being too mouthy, but now that he's settled in more I am seeing it as
he is biting to get what he wants. I am
working on this with him, but I would not feel right placing with little ones.
4/6/07 - Lakota is doing very well & boy is he HAPPY we had snow the other night! This is one dog
that just LOVES the snow! He was catching snowflakes as they fell, jumps through piles of snow just
like a little puppy, soooo excited & happy! LOL He likes to play catch with soft snowballs & would
stay out in the snow for awhile just to play if you let him. He is doing great with my dogs & I have
found he is very submissive. I think Brindle, my foster boxer, was at first intimidated by Lakota's size,
so he decided Lakota needed to KNOW who was there first & older. Lakota just melted to the
ground & cried & didn't want to argue! :) Now they are best buddies & Brindle actually likes to play
with Lakota now.
I have found that Lakota is obsessive with cat chasing though & he gets very rough, to the point I do
believe he would hurt one. He has got my cat J.J. a few times & has made him "squeak" (I think
Lakota thinks he is a fluffy squeaky toy that moves!). Now I have to put J.J. in another room when I
have Lakota out as he will not leave him alone.
Lakota really needs a home soon where he can get more exercise & even maybe have a dog that will
play with him. Like most "working dog" breeds, he really does like to have something "to do". I found
he would focus completely when we were playing catch with the snowballs & if it's feeding time he does
too! :) With some good obedience training & a little time, I really see Lakota as blossoming into a
great buddy. He has a sweet, puppy innocence type of a personality & just doesn't know he has grown
up into a big body yet! :)
3/16/07 - Lakota is a gorgeous long haired purebred German Shepherd that needs a home. He is 13
months old, about 100 lbs & neutered & up to date on all shots. He had a terrible beginning to his life
as when he was bought at 8 weeks old, the "owners" put a muzzle on him for the next 10 months when
they were not home just so he wouldn't get into trouble! I guess this is their THIRD dog they have
done this to & they dropped them off at the shelter too just like Lakota. Both of the first dogs had to
be put down for flunking the temperament & behavioral tests at the shelter. Lakota was in line for being
put down too, only because he's a wild & crazy 8 week old puppy in a 100 pound body & he doesn't
know how any obedience training. Luckily he is super sweet & doesn't seem to have any ill effects
from this awful life, so we offered to save him & find him a REAL home that will love him. He walks
great on a gentle leader collar (without it, watch out!-LOL). He needs someone who is use to the
German Shepherd traits of barking, whining & being mouthy (not nasty at all though) & needs a person
who it not going to let him run the house. He gets along with kids of all ages (lived with 1 year old &
up) & other dogs & does okay in a wire crate (needs an XXLG one though!). Pictures will be up
soon, but trust me, he's a beauty with an all black back & nice sable & black on the rest of him!
