UPDATE 2/18/08 - Ruby continues to be a fabulous addition to our family. We had her
microchipped last week and she was great. Our family grew in October with the birth of our twin
daughters. We were a little concerned about how she would react to our new additions but she has
been wonderful. She is very protective of them with strangers (which is a good thing in our opinion)and
attempts to give them kisses to say good morning as well as whenever she thinks we are not looking.
Ruby continues to be an expert counter surfer and recently stood alongside the counter and enjoyed a
loaf of banana bread that was prepared for my grandmother in Puerto Rico :-( My grandmother thought
it was very comical when I shared the story of how I made her a delicious treat and as I finished bathing
one of the babies I saw Ruby licking the crumbs off her face with a big satisfied grin. Ruby has been
observed standing alongside the counter and using her long boxer arm to reach out and scoop items she
wants. Honestly, just when you think you have out smarted her she finds a way to get the desired treat
when you are not paying attention. Perhaps the baby gates that are in our near future will alleviate some
of her surfing.
Ruby has a few pals she enjoys spending time with Tucker, a black lab mix and Cooper an australian
shepard mix. Cooper was rescued by a friend of ours in November and is a constant hiking companion
for Ruby. We are really looking forward to the warmer weather so we can get her out hiking more. It
will be good for me as well so I can loose those last few baby pounds!
Ruby is so wonderful we continue to discuss adopting another boxer. She is so social with other dogs
and we really enjoy watching her frolic and play. Once the babies are a little bigger I think we will
enhance our family with another wonderful wiggly boxer.
UPDATE 9/18/07 - Ruby continues to do well. She has discovered the joy of chasing the barn cats,
turkeys, and deer at our new home. She has also done a fabulous job with the crate and will go in
independently when she is tired or with prompting if she is snuggling on the bed and falls asleep. She
sleeps in her crate all night with the door open.
We are pregnant with twins and are expecting soon. Ruby has been very protective of her mom as her
belly has grown especially when strange people approach. A very good security system when you live
out in the country. We hope she will provide equally good protection to our children. She has been a
goofy and loveable addition to our family. We can barely remember what life was like before we had
her. We think we may be ready for another boxer soon but want to get used to our babies first.
Ruby had a benign tumor removed from her ear and did very well with her recovery for the most part. I
must say it's very hard to keep a boxer quiet for 3 weeks. She was not a big fan of the elizabethen
collar for the first few days but became a pro after that. We lived in a 3rd floor apartment at the time
and she ran up and down the stairs with ease after her adjustment period. Boxers are so smart.
She continues to love playing with her best friend Tucker, a black lab mix. They run and run to the point
of exhaustion. It's funny to see them once they've begun playing because they are both covered in
slober. When I drive her home from his house she sleeps the whole way home.
UPDATE 6/4/07 - "Kisses", who we renamed Ruby with permission from Leanne the first week we
took her home, has been doing great. Our dog trainer said that she would show her true colors after a
one month "honeymoon period" which turned out to be more like 2+ months. Now that the
"honeymoon" is finally over she has begun to be a bit naughty. She is an expert counter surfer. She has
helped herself to butter, nectarines, cookies, and whatever else she can sniff out on the table or
counters. We have learned that even in the car she has an innate ability to sniff out goodies. We all
learned that with some digging she could open the center console and cup holder in the car to retrieve
doggie treats, strawberries, etc. Unfortunately we learned this the hard way upon returning to the car
after a quick trip into the store or gas station only to find a smile on her face, an empty bag of goodies,
and a torn up console and broken cup holder :o( Now that her first round of training class is over she is
training us.
We still love her to pieces and feel like she has been with us forever. She has a new friend, a black lab
mix named Tucker, who she plays with weekly. She is always exhausted after a play date with him. She
is a very social dog and seems to like every 2 and 4 legged being she meets.
We will be moving to a new home in August on 13 acres. She has visited several times and loves to run
and run and run on the property. We think she will be very happy there.
UPDATE 4/29/07 - Kisses is doing great. We absolutely LOVE her. She graduated from obedience
class on 4/25/07 and looked really adorable in her graduation cap. In obedience class Kisses learned
to come, down, sit, heel, sit-down-sit, wait, stay, and started to learn stand. She is such a brilliant dog.
Kisses LOVES to hike and on days when we don't take her (rainy days) she lays in her chair and sighs.
It is very cute but does make you feel a bit guilty despite the fact that she hates the rain.
She has learned to sneak food off the table which I discovered yesterday when I noticed that the butter
was missing from the table. She is a big fan of fruit and we will often give her grapes, watermelon or
strawberries instead of dog cookies. It's a great way to encourage her to get into her crate at night or
when we need to leave for the day and the bonus is we don't have to worry about weight gain!
I think the world knows we have a dog now. We have nose marks on the window behing her chair and
in both of our vehicles :0) We couldn't be happier with her and look forward to buying a house and
having another Boxer join our family!
UPDATE 3/29/07 - Kisses has been doing extremely well with us. We have not had an accident in the
house or crate for almost 2 weeks:)She loves going for hikes and we usually go hiking about 3 times a
week. We take her for a walk or to the dog park to play fetch nearly every day when the weather
cooperates. She seems to enjoy playing in the snow! Not something I expected from a boxer! She has
2 new friends, our friends chocolate labs Chip and Tessa, who she plays "tug of war" and "keep away"
with several times a week. They also have fun hiking together. I secretly think Chip is her best friend.
We Started obedience class almost right away on March 14th. She is a smart girl and learns quickly.
We are still struggling with the "come" command but seem to have mastered "sit" "wait" and "lets go"
and are getting close with "stay" "off" and "down".
Kisses has been showered with new toys over the past few weeks. At first she was really gentle with
stuffed squeky toys. As a result we bought her a few. They are all now in the toy infirmery waiting for
repairs (some are on their 2nd repair).
Kisses health has been good. She has had a few vommitting incidences and has been tested for
everything under the sun at the vet. Fortunately she is in good health and is enjoying her current boiled
rice, chicken and dry dog food combo as we attempt to get her back on dog food.
If you are considering adopting a boxer what are you waiting for? She is everything we hoped for and
more. My husband is absolutely smitten (and vice versa!)
3/3/07 - Kisses has been adopted!
2/19/07 - Kisses moved to Maine on Sunday as the dog in her last foster home has decided he just is
not happy with sharing his family with another dog. Thank you to all of her transport volunteers who
helped get her up here! She rode great & was so cute riding around with me for a few hours Sunday
doing some errands. She found a box of dog toys in the back of my car with her & proceeded to
carefully look through the box & pulled out a chew rope to gnaw on for awhile. Then she discovered
an almost empty bag of snausages type treats & discovered how to open the bag so she could get the
last few treats for herself. All of this as I was driving! She can definitely keep herself entertained! LOL
She then curled up on the dog bed in the back of the car & slept during the rest of the errands.
Kisses is a very sweet dog & you would never guess about her awful past. She was confiscated by the
state last month as a cruelty/neglect case. She spent hours on end crated, not fed or watered, and
laying in her own feces. Her former owner was/is drug addicted and is now in jail. Luckily she is very
lovable, friendly & a happy girl. She shows too much interest in my cat though, so she should go to a
home without cats.
Kisses is ready to find her new home. She will not be able to leave until the first weekend in March
(after her spay), but hurry & ask for Kisses now, before she is pending for someone else!
2/4/07 - Kisses is doing very well in her foster home. In just a few days, Kisses is almost house
trained! She does have accidents in the crate from time to time but has gotten much better about letting
us know when she needs to go outside. She had her first checkup today and the doctor said that she is
a happy and healthy girl - not too big, not too small (no woman I know of wants to be either!) She
weighs in at 58 pounds and is up to date with all of her shots. The only bad piece of news is that she
does have a slight heart murmur but nothing too serious - the doctor said that he would classify it as a 1.
This girl is truly a puppy - she loves to play and run around and of course give lots of kisses. She is
well adjusted to her crate and would do well in a family with plenty of kids to play with.
1/29/07 - She is a very VERY VERY sweet girl......... we got home about 30 minutes ago, she
WOOFED down 2 cups of dry food, yogurt and some wet food..... she is resting in her crate... she is
young about a year old......
