KERRA
DEAF - (NOTE: Due to my hearing impairment, I will need a home with a fence, another dog and
someone that is home more often (ex: at home parent, work at home, work opposite shifts, retired, etc)

UPDATE 6/2/07 - Hello this is mom to kerra or as she is now called lily,Everything is settling in
beautifully here. my jealous one sweetie is fine so far, patches and lily play all the time and we love her.

5/18/2007 - Kerra attended a BRAD (Boxer Rescue Awareness Day) recently. What a delightful
trooper she turned out to be. It was a long day for Kerra, but she had kisses for everyone. Even though
she couldn't hear the sqweaks, squawks, shouts, and general clamor at Petsmart, it still could have
turned out to be a stressful time for her what with all those weird looking (and smelling) strangers. Not
so...she delighted in meeting new adults, kids and pooches and never showed signs of fatigue. She slept
like a log for the rest of the day when she returned to her foster home, though.

A few remaining things an adoptive home should know about Kerra:

She has had ONLY 3 instances of submissive peeing and this happened when people came into the
house and made  direct eye contact with her. This should not be an issue as long as visitors know that
it's best to greet the humans of the household first!

Kerra can still be skittish at times. When she is you'll have success getting her to come to you if you
move slowly, show her your hands, wiggle your fingers to "come here" and bend a little to her level. She
is quite the follower and will let the resident boxers lead the way before happily joining in. We use lots
of rewards in the form of treats and petting. We touch her softly as often as possible so she is less likely
to startle when she doesn't see/hear you coming.  An easy way to get her to come to you is to pay
attention to other people or animals! Or to show her a treat or item of interest.  DO NOT CHASE
HER - 0% success rate if you do!

We haven't made a lot of progress on sign language, but I think she will blossom with just the right
person who can help her understand that all those funny movements actually mean something.

We are still working on clearing up her ears...They were a real mess. She is so good when we apply the
ear cleaner and the ear med drops. I know she doesn't like it, but unlike one of our other boxers, she
has NEVER even thought about trying to nip me when the drops are applied. Of course she gets treats
afterwards for being so good, but still - I trust her completely. We have never seen one sign of any
aggressiveness towards people or dogs.

This girl will be missed soooooo much when she is snapped up by her lucky adoptive family. Our
mothering boxer girl Sandy will probably pack her belongings and tag along because Kerra is her
exercise buddy and her "best to hang around with pal". If you are willing to work with this sweet lap
dog and want to test your skills at sign language, get your application in PDQ. In the meantime, we
remain honored to have her with us.

4-24-2007 - Well, it’s been quite a while since Kerra’s last update and it’s time for her
mid-semester Boxer Academy report card! The entire “staff and all her classmates are very
proud (and in love with) this well-behaved and sweet-natured coed. Here are her grades:

Health: A minus – Kerra is recovering from her spay and her ears are really clearing up. No sign of
ear mites now, but a slight presence of yeast, so we continue with the ear meds for another week. We
are still working on putting a little more weight on her. Her pictures don’t look it, but her ribs, hips,
and back bone are prominent and we’d like to see a few more pounds on her.

Attitude: A – It’s easy living with Kerra - you hardly notice there’s another boxer living here
now. She tries to please, follows curfew, goes with the flow, and never causes a fuss.  The crate isnâ
€™t her favorite, but she will go in for us. She can’t wait to romp with her pals again, but she must
be patient until the Vet says “OK. Just give her your lap and she's yours.

Sign Language: C plus – Just a little progress here, but she will come to us if we squat or bend down
to her level and wiggle our fingers to “come hereâ€.   She will also follow the tip of a finger out the
door or into the crate. We are still working on the basics like sit, down, stay, etc. She’s not at all a
problem, though, because she follows the other dogs as they respond to our cues.  Still not one
accident in the house – even after her spay. She was totally out of it when we brought her home. We
couldn’t get a bite of food or sip of water into her for at least 12 hours and yet twice she stirred her
wobbly-self to do her business outside. So good!

Sociology: A – She loves (and needs) dogs, people, and the kitty. She would get an A+ except she
will sometimes bark and/or growl at strangers while we are on our walks. She always is better walking
alongside another dog and acts reluctant to go too far away from the house when she is the only dog on
a walk. Also, she still startles or scares easy if you move quickly towards her or touch her when she
doesn’t know you are near.

I've got to post a better picture that shows how cute she really is. If you have patience and a desire to
teach her sign language, she will add a sparkle to your life. She is a true jewel and someone will be
soooooo lucky
and privileged to adopt her, restore her shine, and earn her loyalty and trust. In the meantime, she is
welcome to complete her studies right here - safe and sound - at the Academy, but don't keep her
waiting too long!

4-7-2007 - Kerra has been at the Academy now almost a week and we can’t say enough nice
things about her. She is adorable (cuter than her pictures) though too thin. At least she is a good eater
now and goes willingly in her crate for a treat or for meals. She will whine and/or bark a little when we
first put her in the crate for the night, but quickly settles down for a good sleep.

Kerra LOVES, LOVES, LOVES being with the other 3 boxers and is most relaxed when one or more
are near AND she is cuddled next to a warm human body. She shadows her foster Dad and Mom all
through the house.  She has not had one single accident since she came to the Boxer Academy which
we find amazing
since she doesn’t seem to know any commands and was a stray before coming to rescue. She
loves to go for walks and is better on a leash than one of our resident boxers. She startles easily though,
so when we want to pet her or touch her or put a leash on her, we need to let her see our hands and
smell them and we need to rub her under the chin a little first.

Kerra went to visit the vet yesterday and is up to date with all of her shots. She tested negative for
heartworm – yippee – and her fecal did not show parasites. However, we found out she has ear
mites. No wonder she
didn’t like me trying to clean her ears. The vet flushed and treated her ears with medicine and we
need to keep up the ear meds for 3 weeks. She will be spayed shortly and then should be good to go.
This little girl will win your heart within a minute. As the note above says, she really needs at least one
other dog in her life. She learns so much from our three. She also needs a good fence. When she saw
her foster Dad in the driveway and she was alone in the back yard she climbed halfway over the fence
to get to him. Someone also should be home most of the day. She is still very much a puppy and we
suspect she is closer to 1 1/2 than 2 years of age. She tries so hard to please and is so happy when
shown attention. Just yesterday she discovered that it was fun to play with a gummy bone.

We are not sure about cats. We don’t think she would harm the kitty, but she is soooo interested
and stands at alert when she sees him. One thing that is really strange…she is the first dog we have had
that just doesn’t sit. She either stands or lies down or drapes herself over your lap! What a dear
she is and once she fills out a little, she is going to be dynamite! If you have patience and are willing to
help her with sign language and lots of positive reinforcement get your application in. She will be your
life long companion.

4/1/07 - Mr. Kodak's Academy for Fine, Young Boxers, fondly referred to as - The Boxer Academy â
€“ welcomes Miss Kerra , a cute, white boxer girl, who has matriculated to the academy from out of
state. She was a stray so not too much is known about her past, but she wanted us to be sure to thank
Betty and George for getting her off the street, into a warm shelter, and on her way to a better life.

We will be learning as much about Miss Kerra as she will be learning at the academy, but we already
know she is deaf, has one blue eye with a big brown and black patch around it and one brown eye, and
she is very, very thin.  Did I mention that she loves to give kisses and loves to get lots of rubs, pats, and
attention? We have enrolled her in beginning sign language, nutrition 101, and crate magic.  We’ll
keep you posted as she settles in.
