| UPDATE 2/7/08 - We let our beloved Kato Man go to the Bridge today. He was diagnosed awhile ago with degenerative myelopathy, and because there is no real treatment, we opted to let him tell us when he was ready.
I knew yesterday that he was very tired -- he did not want to get up and go out, and when I finally got him going, he went outside, did his business, and could not get his back legs going. Even with all of the rugs downstairs, he kept falling. I slept downstairs with him last night, and when he looked at me, he had those sorrowful eyes telling me he was too tired to go on. We were with him and stayed with him until we knew he was free. Our vet and the techs were wonderful. We loved him a lot and are greatful he spent his last months with us. Dick and I cry for him today but are also greatful he is now in God's hands running free. Thank you all for caring. UPDATE 10/28/07 - Kato is doing very well. And, we absolutely adore him. There is something about seniors that can't be duplicated. He and Abby love to ride in the car and even sit side by side in the back seat Abby is still exuberant and has to be harnessed, but Kato sits there like the true gentle dog he is. He continues to have a back leg problem, but is quite good at compensating for it. Abby still can't engage him in play, but on a nice, cool, non-humid day there is a lot of bounce in the boy! I continue to communicate and send pictures to the lady who took him in when his owners discarded him and will always be grateful that he found his way to our home. 9/07 - Kato has been adopted! 9/8/07 - Kato has been with us for several weeks and has adapted amazingly well. His eye papolloma is gone, and the eye specialist has given him a clean bill of "eye" health. He had to have eye drops 3 times a day and was very cooperative. He also lets me brush his teeth once a day as we are trying to do plaque removal the old-fashioned way. Kato would make an amazing companion to anyone -- young, middle aged or older. He is such a kind, gentle gentleman and just needs that extra loving that he may not received in his past life. His only health situation (although not to him) is arthritis in his back legs. He kind of sits down in only a way he can figure out! We have several hard wood floors in the house so we just put down some extra throw rugs to help him maintain his balance. If he loses his footing, he does pick himself up and goes on his merry way. We have also started him on glucosamine. We continue to have our long walk in the morning and shorter ones in the afternoon. I believe that developing good exercise has also begun helping him develop better muscles. Abby still tries to engage him in a play session to no avail. He did go after the tennis ball and pick it up once -- and I guess he thought once was enough (LOL). He choses not to repeat that play session!! There is something about a senior dog that can't be compared -- they just love and love to be loved. If Kato can fill a void in your life, he's the man! 8/27/07 - Kato has returned from successful eye surgery. He is resting comfortably after being hand fed his dinner and enjoying a lot of extra attention from Dick and I as well as Abby Girl. We will see the vet in two weeks for his follow up visit, and he is not expecting any problems. Kato is quite a guy. He now sleeps upstairs with the rest of the family as we bring him in through the deck. We had to put down a couple of extra rugs on the dining room floor so he wouldn't slip he has arthritis in the back legs. He is becoming a little more playful and loves his walks. He tries very hard to keep up with Dick and Abby and does not want to split off from walking with them. He is an absolute love. 8/20/07 - With Kato being on Zuberin for his arthritis, he now walks up and down the stairs with either Dick or I watching over him to make sure he doesn't fall. He's quite a guy! 8/18/07 - We had a good visit with the eye vet this morning. Kato's eye papoloma is adhering to his eyeball and is red and he is recommending it be removed. His surgery is scheduled for August 27 to take care of this. His normal price would be $650 but because Kato is a rescue, he will discount to $400. Dr. Stack told us other than Kato's arthritis and eye problem, he appears to be quite healthy. Kato has come a long way in the week he has been here. He gets his teeth brushed daily (really bad breath (LOL) and enjoys walks around the neighborhood. Thought I would send a picture of Abby & Kato -- I truly believe Abby is learning to respect age!! 8/17/07 - Here is some more on this poor boy's past from the nice lady who called us to help. Kato was left by his family with her (their neighbor) to watch him until they moved. Well, they decided they did not want him back & she could not keep him. She said he is a great dog she thinks he has some arthristis in his back end but it isn't being treated with anything. She says he hasn't been to the vet in years but appears healthy. He was kept in the basement where he used to live. She says she asked them if he had a blanket or a bed when she took him and they said no, he just likes the floor. :( She says he is great with her dog he is very mellow and good with kids. Can you give this boy the life he deserves with a home that loves him? 8/15/07 - Kato went to the vet yesterday and is UTD on his shots, weighs 68 lbs, is neutered. Our vet contacted an eye specialist today as Kato has a huge papoloma on his eyelid which has grown inside the lid. Even though it's pretty ugly to look at, he is still quite handsome, and he loves to have his belly rubbed. I am very grateful to our new vet who called this specialist for us. I won't know until Saturday morning how they can handle it, and I don't want to project. We started him on Zuberin yesterday, and he does seem more bouncy today. He and Abby met this afternoon in the backyard, and all went well. I now believe Abby's main ambition in life is to get one of these old folks to play with her. Maybe it's her way to get them into therapy!! At this point, Kato has not been introduced to cats, but I can't imagine him being anything but a gentleman. He is house trained and does not need to be crated. He goes up stairs, but we do help him go down. We're all trying to get used to what he can and can't do. I'll keep you posted on the eye situation. 8/13/07 - Here's our first pictures of Kato Man. As you can see, he has some hair loss and heavy duty body callouses. We enjoyed seeing the photos on his write up page. I'll do a full update once he visits the vet tomorrow. We're all enjoying a quiet Sunday at home. He and Abby have met through the gate with no comment by you know who. I think Abby Girl may be mellowing. One night this week, we will have them meet in the backyard. 8/11/07 - Kato has arrived at the Dreydoppel home for seniors--thanks to Ralph who again went so many extra miles for us -- we are grateful to him. I'm in love with this boy already. He has many problems -- a large cyst growing on his eyelid and rubbing on his eye, rub marks on his legs and unfortunately hip dysplasia. But, he is so loving. He was quite dirty so before we brought him home he went to the groomers and I swear when he came out he was perkier. Our groomer showed us how to help him into the car by using a towel. He goes to the vet Monday afternoon to be updated on everything and to give us some thoughts on how best to let Kato enjoy the rest of his life. Will send pictures tomorrow. Thanks again Ralph -- you are truly a wonderful person for what you do. |
