UPDATE 12/16/09 - Hytop is doing great. He just loves the snow and gets very excited when you
throw snowballs at him.
He and the cat sttle down for the night on his dog bed every night. They're the best of buddies. He also
gets lots of time running around granpa's field and playing with the other dogs. He just can't seem to get
enough of other dogs. He's not so sure about the cows and pigs though.
We have campfires in our back yard and had a surprise visit from a neighbor down the street that
Hytop hadn't met yet and Hytop stood in front of me and barked at him and the hair on his back stood
up on ends. Once Josh or I say Enough! he sits and relaxes. He has become a good protector. Or at
least he puts on a good show.
He's such a big part of our life, I really can't remember what it was like without him.
UPDATE 12/10/08 - Hytop is doing so good!! He's loving all the holiday company we've been having.
He's had a great fall season helping Josh & grandpa in the hay fields. Running at full speed with the
other dogs and tuckering himself out!
He's very gentle with th ekids. Loves to play ball with them and loves to give kisses & sniff the little
babies.
He's had itchy skin, which we were told is form the lack of humidity, but other than that a great bill of
health.
UPDATE 6/5/08 - Hytop just had another check up w/the vet & has gained weight. 73 lbs. He's all
muscle except for those jowls. LOL He loves the outdoors. Chasing tennis balls & running through the
sprinkler. I do need to find a bug spray that's safe for dogs. Bugs seem to love him.
Josh & I ar egetting married this weekend and going to Mexico for a honeymoon, so Top gets to spend
the week at grammy & gramps house with their 4 dogs and the cows & chickens. He will have such a
good time!
3/7/08 - Hytop is loving teh snow. I hope he enjoyes being outside as much in the summer.
He graduated his obediencec lass. He was very sad to say goodbye to his love Matilda. If she didn't
like to eat cats, we'd adopt her too because they're just SO cute together.
Hytop is becoming quite the protector. Only barks when people he does not know comes on to our
porch or strange men come in the house. No signs of aggressive behavior like lunging or anything, just a
nice deep throaty bark to let them know he means business. Once they meet he's usually a big bag of
love.
UPDATE 2/8/08 - Hytop is doing very well. He had his first visit to the vet for a checkup & all the
ladies in the office were putty over him. Note to self: don't let Josh take him to the beach by himself:-)
We have 2 classes left in obedience. He would rather spend the whole time playing with the other dogs,
but is learning quite well. He still has soem separation anxiety from Josh so we're working on that.
While everyone else in the class is trying to get their dogs to "come", we have to work on "stay" with
Hytop. I understand "velcro like Boxer" now.
We're slowly introducing new fruits & veggies to him. We add some veggies & rice to his food and he
just loves it. But when not mixed in w/his food he spits stuff out & we have to give it back to him and
say eat it 3 or 4 times before he actually tastes it and realizes he likes it. .
He is an all around great boy!
11/07 - Hytop has been adotped!
11/13/07 - Hytop is doing very well here and is great with the other dogs. He and my other foster,
Joey, have been playing the last few days. They love to "jaw" each other ("my mouth is bigger than
your mouth!"-LOL) & throw in a jab or two here and there with their front paws. It's so cute to watch
them play. Hytop seems so much happier now, like he is completely relaxed with all the changes and
de-stressed from his time at the kennel. He has been nothing but great in the house and no accidents.
He has only a couple of accidents in his crate on one of my longer workdays when I could not get home
to let him out soon enough. This Southern boy is still adjusting to the cold up here though as he tries to
hide on the couch whenever it is time to go out. I have to get his leash out and then he gives in and goes
outside to do his business. He makes sure I know he is not happy about it as he stands shivering at the
gate to come in as soon as he is done! LOL Hytop is a very nice boy and will make someone very
happy. I have fallen for this big guy already and I know you will too!
11/9/07 - It's been almost a week since Hytop became a Northern boy and he is doing great! He now
is out with my boxer girl and my other foster, Joey, and not one issue so far. He got to sleep out of his
crate last night and slept happily on the dog beds near me. I think he would have loved to come up on
the bed if there was room, but he is so big and new still, that I made sure he used the dog beds for now.
Hytop's stub tail wags a lot more now and he seemed interested in the other dogs' attempts at playtime,
but he seems a little shy still about getting too involved in what they are doing. He does like to watch
them though & is not bothered by them or my cat at all. He does test his boundaries a little here and
there so he will need to go to someone who has some dog knowledge and will not let him become boss
(think of the Dog Whisperer show and being pack leader--that's what Hytop needs). He has had the
runs the last couple of days and I am not sure if it is just all the changes and different food. I will try to
get a stool sample into the vet to make sure that is all clear. He was wormed at the shelter, but he may
need wormed again. More updates soon on Hytop, the Jolly White Giant! :)
11/5/07 - Hytop arrived on Saturday after a long trip from a great shelter in Alabama we work with.
He was a stray to their shelter about 6 weeks ago. He is neutered and up to date on his shots and
heartworm/lyme negative. Hytop is a very BIG boy! His pictures do not make him look as large as he
is in person, but when he stands up in his extra large wire crate, the tip of his stub tail and tip of his
poorly cropped ears stick out the top! He is about 70 lbs now and is still pretty skinny. I think he will
be about 80 lbs once filled out. I have to find an XXLG crate for this big guy! Don't let his size fool
you though as he is one big marshmallow! So far he has been perfectly fine with my cat and actually
acts like he has probably lived with cats in the past. When I tried a few times to "cat test" him, he just
sniffs my cat & then looks at me as if to say "so what? That's just a cat, what do you want me to do?!".
LOL The shelter said he was good with other dogs, but I have not tried him yet with my girl or my
other foster. He is great in his crate & is crate trained & will go potty outside as soon as I take him
out. More updates on Hytop as he settles in!
