UPDATE 12/2/07 - Well, here we are...experiencing Honey's first winter! She loves running in the
snow and sticking her nose and face in it. She was afraid at first but soon got over that. She is doing
really great, she is walking really well on her leash and obeying most commands. Still working on a few
but she has come a long way. She still meets with her boyfriend Ozzy once a week and they play like
crazy!! I think next year we might consider a brother or sister for Honey, She loves being with other
dogs. That's about it for now, more updates to follow. Merry Christmas!
UPDATE 11/4/07 - Well, here we are, only 3 months since we adopted Honey and it's hard to
believe she hasn't been here forever!
Honey (and I) passed our obedience training final exam a few weeks ago with flying colors. She has
done fabulous! Our trainer can't believe what a different dog she is since he first met her a couple of
months ago. She has learned well and I hope to take her to a new level of training in the spring. She
really loves it and she gets all proud of herself and prances around when I praise her for doing all the
right things.
She's loving the cooler weather, and loves running through the piles of leaves I rake up...always the
helper. I can't wait to see what she'll think of the snow!!
That's all for now...more updates to follow.
UPDATE 10/4/07 - It's hard to believe Honey has only been with us for 2 months!! She has settled
in so well and become a part of our family so fast, it seems as though she has been with us forever. I
can't stop thinking how fortunate we are to have found her, she is a fabulous dog.
We are in our fifth week of obedience trainging and she (and I) are doing great!! I am so proud of her
when we are walking and someone else comes by with a dog on a leash, and I tell Honey to sit, and she
does until I tell her otherwise, and just watches the other dog drag their owner by, barking and trying to
get to Honey (been there!)and the owner will tell me what a well behaved dog I have! We take our final
exam next week and I expect us to pass with flying colors.
Honey has a new boyfriend named Ozzy...he is a 10 month black lab. His owner is a friend of mine
and we have a play date every Monday afternoon at a park and the two of them just run and play and
explore for a couple of hours. It is so much fun to watch them, they love it! As soon as Honey and I
make the turn into the park, she starts getting soooo excited, pacing and crying in the back seat of the
car. She loves her little Oz man!!
Well, time for Honey's walk...more updates to come.
UPDATE 9/2/07 - Honey is doing so well, it's like she has been here forever! She has adjusted
beautifully in this first month. We started obedience training this week and she's coming along pretty
well. The big problem is that apparantly, squirrels are her mortal enemy and she must chase and kill
every one of them. So far, that hasn't happened and we are working on teaching her to ignore them
especially when we are going for our walks. I am pleased to say that while she still has a great interest
in them, I can successfully get her to keep walking away with out her yanking my arm out of the socket!
I believe she will overcome this. She loves her walks (she has endless energy!) we walk 2-3 miles
every morning and do a shorter walk in the evening, with endless games of frisbee and tug-of-war
throughout the day. She has such a goofy personality, she has us laughing all the time. As I write this,
she is sitting next to me with her toy in her mouth staring at me wondering when I am going to stop this
computer stuff and play with her! (and this is after her 3 mile walk!). She is such a joy to have, we feel
very fortunate to have found her...more updates to come.
UPDATE 8/12/07 - Honey has been in our home 1 week now and is doing great!! It took her no time
at all to make this her home. Although we had to get through the first day or two when she was afraid to
walk on any floor without carpet (silly girl!). We actually put some runners down on the tile floor in the
kitchen leading into the dining and living room so she could walk without being afraid (silly us?). She's
now running all over the house, carefree.
She loves to relocate things in the house, mostly clothing or shoes, while she doesn't chew them, she
just picks them up and puts them somewhere else around the house.
We never know where we might find a pair of shorts or a sneaker!
I am talking to a dog trainer tomorrow to discuss some obedience training for Honey. I know she will
benefit from it. She is a crazy girl outside, (quite the bird dog!), and she is not very good on a
leash...very distracted by anything that moves. But she is young and I know will learn fast.
Today is a big day for Honey, she will be meeting my whole family for a birthday party...there she will
meet her new cousins (my two sisters dogs) and I'm sure they will have a ball!
She is going to the vet on Tuesday for a quick meet and greet, and to pick up her heartworm meds. I
hope she loves our vet as much as we do. He's a great doc!
So, that is the highlights of Honeys first week in her new forever home. Can't wait to see what this week
will bring!
8/5/07 - Honey has been adopted!
7/11/07 - Honey is now just her old self. I guess the stress of being dumped at the shelter and then the
long journey up north really took it's toll on the love bug. She is playing, eating, getting in to trouble and
all the other good stuff puppies do. Honey gets along great with Sierra, my other foster and Athena, my
baby girl. Honey has told me that now that she is feeling so much better she is ready for her forever
home. I told her not yet, she is due for her spay on the 18th of July. I will update more after her surgery
and keep everyone informed on how well she is doing here in her foster home. Then maybe her forever
mommy and daddy will call for her.
7/7/07 - Honey is doing so much better now. This morning for breakfast she ate some ground turkey
with lots of garlic. I slipped her a cinnimon roll and she ate that also. I gave her ice cubes and she licked
and played with it. She drank some water from the bowl too. Her nose is a little stuffed still and she has
green dryed crust around her muzzel. I jus wipe it away with a warm towel. When I went to run an
errand this afternoon for about an hour or so, I left her in the yard with my two other babies, Athena
and Sierra. When I returned she was all wiggly and jumping up to greet me. She has been on my heel all
day and night. She has improved greatly, but she still is warm and has some greenish nasal discharge
[aka snot]. She still hacks a little bit, but it's not as bad as it was. Thank God she is doing great. Honey
is also still skittish and hesitates when called. I believe she needs to learn to trust us more. That will
come with time. More later on her and I will take more pictures soon when she is feeling completely
better. She was a real mess when she arrived and she still looks emaciated. I will fatten her up and bring
her out of her shell soon.
7/4/07 - Honey arrived heer last night with Ceaser, the super dog. Thanks Jill helping me get this little
girl here safe and sound. Honey appears to be very shy. She was not easy to get close to the first night.
She stayed in the yard when she arrived here at first but when it was time to get her in the house she
wasn't having it. She refused to climb stairs. We had to carry her in and then we had to carry out to do
her business. She ate half her dinner and was acting very sad and lost her first night. We are doing
everything to get her to come out of herself more, but she is proably sad not being with her daddy
anymore. She also had that long journey from TX and this I know stressed her out. She has a bit of
kennel cough and she will be going to the vet soon for her check up and for a spay appointment. Will
update more soon. She is a little love big and sweetheart who just seems lost and misses her home.
7/3/07 - The TX crew arrived late this afternoon. Honey is a little peanut, fawn with white. She was
surrendered to the shelter because her owner is in the military and got transferred.
