HOBO
UPDATE 10/2/07 -   Hobo is now affectionately nicknamed “Hobieâ€.  Hobo sounded lonely
and hopeless, which is no longer the case!
We adopted Hobie on August 18.  He joins his two-legged brother and sister, mom and dad.  He
adjusted to our home and to us very quickly and has settled into his routine nicely.
Hobie looks forward to his morning and mid-day walks with mom and his evening walks with the
family.  He walks great on a leash—and only pulls when he wants to meet one of the neighborhood
squirrels.  Even the neighbors comment on Hobie's great leash skills!
Hobie loves a soft bed and will sleep wherever there is a cushion or blanket.  I don’t know how he
ever lived on the streets.
He has been to the vet a few times, he’s up to 67 pounds and the vet says he looks great.  Hobie
had his teeth cleaned and a few lumps checked out – but is healthy.  However, Hobie does have a
few more porcupine quills still coming out, which the vet said may happen for up to one year.
We had three successful classes with the trainer – Tom Shelby  -  who was very happy with Hobie
and felt he fits very nicely with our family.
Hobie loves riding in the Suburban as he has the whole back to himself.  He's wonderful with children.
He's eating regularly twice a day (and a bone at lunchtime).  And, all you have to do is look at him and
his little tail just about wiggles right off of him.

8/18/07 - Hobo has been adopted!

8/3/07 - Here's the long overdue update on Hobo!   After he saw the specialist on 7/20 & had all the
quills pulled out of his throat & under his tongue, we have not had a DROP of blood being coughed
up!  This obviously turned out to be his trouble.  Poor guy!  Thank you so much to Leann & Dot who
chauffered Hobo to the vets & took great care of him!  He was very thankful for that & he also thanks
everyone who sent good thoughts & money to help with all his vet visits!  He did say that "porcupine" is
no longer on his menu & he would not recommend it to any of his other doggie friends! :)

Hobo has been here just over 3 weeks and all I can say is THIS IS ONE SUPER SWEET BOY!  He
is so gentle & loving & even during all his quill problems, he never once complained or had any issue
with anything all of us tried to do to him (pulling quills out of his tongue, poking & prodding him for
more quills, etc).  He will give very sweet, little kisses when you ask him & he is just a very mellow, laid
back kind of boy.  He gets along great with my two older boxers & has never had any issues with
them.  Hobo has become more use to my cat, but at times he does still get a little too curious for him.
He loves to go for car rides & is a nice co-pilot!

Hobo was neutered yesterday, had his shots updated & negative for heartworm/lyme combo test.  He
now weighs 58 lbs (he gained 6 more pounds in 2 weeks!) & he is looking much better.  He will
probably be about 65 lbs once he is filled out.

I cannot say enough great things about Hobo, he is just the perfect boy & he deserves the perfect
home!  He is ready to go home now, what are you waiting for?!  You are going to miss out on a
wonderful boy if you do not ask for him now.

7/26/07 - THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP FINANCIALLY AND
EMOTIONALLY FOR HOBO!  HE IS DOING GREAT NOW!

7/21/07 - "WHAT I SAW": Hobo came into rescue just over a week ago. He was and still may be a
bit of a mess. He has very patiently endured people poking and prodding, and then pulling quills from
his face, neck and mouth!  He was vomiting blood, and one vet couldn't find a valid cause. The second
vet couldn't find anything conclusive with the endoscope. With both vets he had more quills removed
while he was "out". There are still more! He has been transported first by one and then another. He has
been "deserted" or so it would seem. He spent the night in the vet office, while awaiting a possible exam
at another place! He went without food because he had to be put "out". I looked into the eyes of this
poor dog and saw nothing! He was desolate! He got petted, fed, walked, talked to, and petted some
more. Still nothing hopeful in those sad brown eyes. He couldn't come into my house for two reasons:
Abbi and Rose still arecoughing from Kennel Cough and he doesn't need that, and Sam and he
wouldn't get along (Sam doesn't like other male dogs). So, he spent more time 'alone' in the back of my
vehicle.

Then his "foster mom" arrived and I took him out of the crate and Julie took over. He started to show
life again. Here was someone he knew. He hadn't been deserted! She was there! Life was starting to
show in those eyes, again! Here was the person that he had been staying with. The person that he had
cuddled with.
He was going to go to ride again, but with his foster mom. If only they could talk, and if only we could
make them understand that we are not leaving them permanently. He isn't very old, but I feel that he has
been through a lot, and been disappointed quite a bit. He still needs to gain weight before he can be
neutered, and then he will probably still have more quills to come out! But when they left here, he was
showing hope! He will make someone a very nice dog, in time, with love, patience and training.
Hopefully his name will not be his destiny.  Dot

7/20/07 - HOBO AND THE ENDOSCOPE: They found nothing conclusive! However, they did
remove another 30-40 quills from his throat, under his tongue and in an encapsulated lump under his
chin! I have him until late this evening. He has already been fed and watered and is crated in the back of
my Escape. He is a sweet boy.  Dot

7/19/07 - HELP NEEDED FOR HOBO!  Hobo has been coughing up a lot of blood off and on the
last couple of days. Today our rescue vet put him under to look in his throat and pulled some more big
porcupine quills out of his tongue and throat but he did not feel this was the problem.  Now Hobo
needs to see a special vet with a scope to check further inside his throat & stomach to see if they can
find out what is going on.  Hobo's vet bills will be well over $800 just to determine what is wrong and
what we can do for him.   SCBR needs your help to pay for these extra expenses to help get Hobo
better!  Thank you for anything you can do!

7/13/07 - Hobo came into rescue on Wednesday night thanks to help from several volunteers who
drove him closer to me.  He was running loose for almost two weeks and had a face full of porcupine
quills!  He was soooo skinny when they caught him, not only due to being a stray, but his mouth was so
infected & he could not eat with all the quills. :(   Poor Hobo!!!  We are so thankful to the people who
caught him & later on his running mate, Penny.  A volunteer spent 2 hours with the vet pulling quills &
could not get them all.  Leann & I noticed when he came in on Wednesday night that he had lots of tiny
quills coming out inside his mouth & on his face & neck. He was so sweet with us both trying to pull
them out & he would wag his tail each time we did, like he just knew we were helping him to get better
& feel better too!  I pulled out about a dozen more last night when he cuddled with me on the couch &
I will keep checking each day to get any more that start to work their way out. (OUCH!!)

He is a very cute boy & is doing great in his crate.  He has met my cat JJ a few times & is VERY
curious, so I don't know how that is going to go.  Hobo just looks a JJ as if he is thinking "hummm, a
porcupine without the pricky things!?".  :)  He is eating very well & drinking lots of water to get
hydrated again & put on some much needed weight.  I am doing a general worming on him now & will
get a fecal sample soon to see if he has any other types of worms.  He may just be so skinny from not
being able to eat for so long as Penny is in a lot better shape.  More updates soon!

FROM ONE OF HIS TRANSPORT VOLUNTEERS:

7/12/07 - I was happy to go get that boy!! His little tail just wags.  He instantly acted relieved.  He
seemed so happy to be in the car.  He jumped right up into mine, found the biscuit I'd left for him and
he ate a few more, then he curled up and went to sleep for the whole drive.  Take a look at the pictures
I took of him while I was driving, and one of Hobo in the car with Fred (his next transporter).  Hobo
looks like he's been a frequent passenger in the front seat. :)    I'm sure Hobo & Penny will find fabulous
homes, because they sure deserve it!
