| 10/26/07 - Today was a very hard day for me as we made the decision that Harley needed to go to the rainbow bridge. He was the most dog and cat aggressive dog I have seen in a long time. The only way I could even slightly control him was when I put a gentle leader on him. Even then he would fight with all his might to attack any dog or cat, mostly that silent attack mode too, which is the worst kind. He would even seek them out at all times when none where around him and he would ignore any and all human contact or attention-his only goal was to get them. Even harder to deal with is that his original home surrendered him as they said they did not trust him with their baby as he would get stiff around the baby. I never saw that, but seeing this is exactly what he did with the animals, I don't doubt it was the same issue. Harley did hear some young kids playing across the fence from my house one day & he got stiff and just sniffed the air, again like he does when he's about to go after one of the animals. We knew that he was very sadly not placeable as he was just not trustworthy or controllable around any animal or kids. I'm sorry I could not "fix" your problems Harley. I'm glad I was able to stay with you until the end & tell you how sorry I was for you. Run free my beautiful boy, you no longer have to be on constant guard anymore. 10/15/07 - Harley has been here for a week now & he is settling in a lot with me. He is very sweet and goofy with me and loves going for rides with me when I do errands. He will stand up the whole ride & sniff the air coming in the side window, just happy as can be! I have found that Harley definitely cannot live with cats though. His ultimate goal is to chase my cat, whether he is inside or outside (boy do you need a firm grip on his leash when he seems him outside!-LOL!). He is not good on the leash, so I am going to try him with a gentle leader collar this week and see how that works. I also have not been able to get him with either of my dogs. Usually after a couple of days of the new foster smelling the dogs in the house and meeting them, they adjust. Harley has taken a dislike to both of my dogs and he is very hard to control on leash when he is in this mind set. Harley definitely will not be your condo/big city or dog park kind of dog where there are lots of other dogs to worry about when walking him on leash. I think Harley is going to need to be an only pet with no little kids. I have not seen a mean bone in his body with me and he is just loveable, playful, submissive and cute (when no other animals are involved). I think Harley's new home will be a more quiet type of a home where he can be the Prince and best buddy. Do you have the type of home Harley needs? 10/7/07 - Harley came into rescue this afternoon. He is a 2 year old light brindle neutered male with a docked tail, natural ears & the cutest "tough guy" looking boxer face! (he has that really nice underbite that makes him have that "face" I love!). Harley was surrendered as his family had a baby and they said that it seemed like the baby made him nervous and they did not seem him adjusting to the baby. They felt that since he can be fearful of some things (like shovels) and they were seeing some signs of stress with him around the baby, that he would be best to find a home without little kids. It is obvious that Harley was well taken care of and well loved and he seems like a very nice boy. He likes to go for car rides and is said to get along with other dogs. More updates as I get to know Harley better! |
