UPDATE 1/31/08 - 2nd month update!!
2 months has flown by...
dukes has finally started to show his true colors, meaning that he may look big and tough but he's the
biggest baby!
we've gone back to my moms in CT with him this past weekend, he whined for a good 4 hours and
after taking two really really long walks he finally tired himself out enough to relax and have a good time.
we're slowly introducing him to new places, which make him a little nervous at first, but as long as mom
and dad are around he feels a little safer. he loves riding in the car and has his bed in the back so he can
look out the window and sight-see.
We've been working with a trainer doing some obedience work and he's been much much better in that
department. He never jumps on us anymore and he's working really hard to not jump on company,
although that can be difficult for him as he really loves meeting new people and can't wait to say hello.
he also went to the vet!
the vet was laughing at him because he was whining quite a bit, with all the smells and things. when he
whines he sounds like he swallowed a squeak toy! hard to believe he's such a big crybaby!luckily there
were no other dogs in the waiting room so we had a chance to walk him around and get use to the smell
of the place. he's lost some weight since we got him, he's now a healthy 68 pounds and lots of muscle!
his diet is good and he loves treats, but we keep them under control since he could eat all day if he
could! he got his rabies and distemper and he is now a fully licenced dog! what a relief too, since the
laws about pet dogs are pretty strict here in portland.
the walking has turned around almost 100 %. he walks right next to both of us and rarely pulls on the
leash now. he looks forward to his long hour and a half walk everyday and even though somedays it's
cold outside so do we.
in a few more months i hope to say that his bashfullness of new places has decreased but for right now
we're really amazed by how much he's calmed down and how he's settled right in. his favorite thing...
when his dad or i sit on the floor he crawls over and lays his head in our lap and wants to be held like a
baby. it's pretty funny to see.
UPDATE 12/11/07 - first night duke was with us, he cried all night...we were afraid it would happen
for weeks! happy to say after that night he sleeps really well. he has his bed in our room next to us and
snores nice and loud!
to this day he's only had one accident in the house which was the 2nd day he was there and he really is
tottally housetrained.
the first time we tried to take him out on a walk was a NIGHTMARE...feet up in the air, pulling
barking, yeesh. we bought a gentle leader and are happy to report he has totally turned around! of
course he still wants to go sniff everything, but we've actually graduated him to a regualr cinch collar and
he is doing really well!!
every day he goes on two really really long walks one with his dad and one with me, as well as at least
2 or 3 shorter walks, the more he walks, the calmer he is, at the end of the really long walk each day i
see the potential of this dog, he just needs excersize!
we work everyday with him to get him learning the ropes, he sits really well (most of the time) and does
down to wait for food. we are making sure he's introduced to many people and the jumping thing is
SOOOO much better. he's learing who's boss in the house and athat we are just as stubborn and
determined as he is! :)
he's on a waiting list to get into an obedience class which will be great for him, but he has such an ability
to learn, when he feels like it haha.
at the end of the day, duke falls asleep in his chair while we watch a movie and i'm happy to say we
couldn't be happier with him, he's a perfect match for us, and in a few years with some more training
and patience i know he will be such an obemdience happy adjusted dog!
11/23/07 - Dukes has been adopted!
9/21/07 - Dukes is a wonderful boy…he is quite smart and very willing to be obedient…he is learning
to sit and wait his turn at the door and for his food bowl.
Dukes hasn’t met another living thing that he doesn’t adore…he loves having all these
playmates and has gotten along with all the dogs here including our resident “bad boy.
My 6 year old son has played fetch with him, he likes to play, but doesn’t like to return the ball,
and he has overcome the enthusiastic jumping. The word “no…puts him back on the floor
before he makes contact with your shoulders. Dukes is just a young pup. Seeing him wrestle with our
160lb Great Dane is a riot. Dukes quickly learned that if he goes underneath Fritz he has the advantage.
He just stays underneath where Fritz can’t reach him and he nips at Fritz’s legs. Fritz gets so
frustrated that he has taken him down a couple of times with a big roar. Dukes just flattens himself on
the ground as if he’s terrified, (I can see that he’s really laughing!), waiting for his chance to
grab the BIG boy’s chin. Dukes would fit in almost anywhere because of his good nature. He
should have another dog to play with…
9/18/07 - More info on Dukes: He was raised with a toddler, cats, and a small dog (he plays well with
her too!). Both owners work and go to school so they were forced to leave him home all day. He is
completely house broken and doesn’t chew or have any other destructive behaviors. When told to â
€œkennel upâ€ he immediately enters his indoor kennel. However, he does jump because of a high
energy level caused from being cooped up in the house all day. He needs lots of love, attention, and
space to run.
9/17/07 - Dukes has arrived, he’s a cutie-pie! Dukes is a boxer mix. It turns out he was named for
the “Dukes of Hazard. His family was upset to have to turn him over to rescue, however they
felt they had to, due to family issues. So far he is behaving very nicely and has met Mickey, the 7 year
old Great Dane, Bandit, and Brody, they all seem to accept him….He is just a puppy and still has most
of his puppy fat and he is quite sure that the whole world is his playground. He goes into the crate with
a big sigh of disappointment…like “what d’ya mean play time is over? I just got started!.
Dukes will need obedience training…he will listen sometimes however, not often enough to consider
him well trained. He has a big enthusiasm for life!!!! More to come as we get to know this little guy.
