UPDATE 9/28/07 - Greetings from NJ...We picked up Duke in Portland, ME on Tuesday, and were
sooooooooo excited to see what a beautiful boy he was...my 3 children were so happy to meet him.
We had a nice easy 5hr drive home, with Duke sleeping in a little bed we made for him in the minivan
(as well as laying across my daughter's laps!). Since we've been home he's met lots of kids and dogs,
and has been wonderful with all of them! He and my son have become fast friends...and are napping
together as I type this.
We also took Duke to our vet, and he has to wear a cone on his head for a bit since he's been licking at
his neutered area...so he looks a bit goofy...but he's a happy-go-lucky guy!
9/25/07 - Duke has been adopted!
9/20/07 - Duke has settled into his foster home, and is just having a blast playing with my own dog, Ali,
and the other neighborhood dogs.
Duke really is a sweetheart, and will cuddle right up with you on the couch or in the bed if you let him.
He is so soft and has a georgous coat that is great to snuggle up to! Dule was trained by his original
family to sleep in his crate at night, and when I let him know it is time to go to bed, he'll go right into his
crate and snuggle up with his blankets by himself, even if I'm still finishing my own night routine.
Duke is really a mellow fellow for a 7 month old, and will romp and play, then soon after just drop to
the floor and sleep.
Duke really enjoys playing, chewing on bones, playiing with balls, playing with other dogs, playing with
children, and eating!
Speaking of eating, Duke unfortunately has developed some bad habits--he must have gotten people
food in the past, because he begs when you eat at the table, and barks if you don't give him any. Duke
is no longer getting any people food, but is a counter-surfer, and is always looking to steal food--so he
will need some firm training in that department. Duke also needs some obedience training, as he doesn't
respond when his name is called, but as he is so young, I would bet that with some firm and consistent
training, he will develop into a fantastic adult dog.
I'm working on uploading all of the photos I took of Duke yesterday, so hopefully there will be some
soon!
Duke goes in tomorrow for his neuter, then will be ready for his forever home! He is going to make a
family extremely happy!
9/16/07 - Duke arrived yesterday, and he is quite possibly the most georgous boxer I've ever seen!
Duke is a large deep chestut brindle with a beautiful coat and soft, soft fur. (Pictures forthcoming)
Duke is literally perfect--for a large boxer, he walks like an absolute gentleman on the leash with a long
slack beside me as he trots along. Although he did have one accident in the house last night, I'm sure it
was just nerves from the transition into foster care, and since he went potty outside when I brought him
last night, as well as first thing this morning and after playing in the yard. So, it seems Duke is fully
housetrained. He did jump up a few times on us, but promply instructed him to stay down, so after
those first few times, he has not jumped up at all.
He has met one of the children in the neighborhood, and let her play and pet him as his little tail wagged
and wagged. I put both Duke and my 2 year old boxer, Ali outside this morning after their breakfast
and they
wrestled and played for a long time.
Duke's family unfortunately had to surrender him due to terrible allergies suffered by one of the children,
and were very sad to have to give him up, as he is such a great dog.
