UPDATE 12/22/07 - Overall, Cooper is doing quite well. He's adjusted well to our household, though
he is definitely one of those dogs that will fight you for pack-leader status his entire life! He adores
having Brady around, after the first few days of sorting each other out they have been inseparable.
Whether they are sleeping in one of the crates together, playing tag with a toy or wrestling, they are
quite happy with each other.
He's doing better with the cats as well. Rashka, the older one, had a history with dogs and I think he
thinks he is one! The other day Brady and Cooper were sleeping in one of the crates together while I
was wrapping presents and Rashka came downstairs and went in a curled up next to them! I tried to
get my camera, but alas, they had to see where I was going and the moment was ruined. Akela still
doesn't like it when the dogs stick their noses in her face but I think thats just cause she's a princess and
doesn't like it when something happens that she didn't choose.
Every month or so we go visit our parents in CNY- they both love car rides!- or they will come visit us
so my boys get to hang out with my Mom's girls. They live on almost 40 acres of trails, ponds, etc and
both Brady and Cooper adored it! They got along well with my Mom's dogs, a rotty-Princess- and
dobbie mix-stazi, with only a few minor squabbles. Mostly they just loved having so many friends so
there was always someone to play with!
Thanksgiving this year was especially nice for us since we hosted for the first time in our first house:)
Since everyone was coming from 4+ hours away everyone stayed over a night or two and all the dogs
came as well! Our two boxers, my mom's rottie and dobie mix, and my Aunts husky! Thats five
rambunctious dogs- all under 3 yrs old- for three days! It was a bit hectic at times but very enjoyable
and Cooper did especially well with everyone. He's a little less high energy than Brady so he played,
but not as rambunctiously. We're definitely fencing in our yard this spring though, that will be such a
help for next year!
Other than a few personality quarks- like always testing his boundaries, thinking the trash is tasty, etc-
Cooper's only real problem is his separation anxiety. He did great the first week he was with us but
ever since then its been hit or miss, and mostly miss, with how he does when left alone. Its only a few
days a week that this is necessary but it seems as if medication is going to be unavoidable. At least to
get over the hump. If the medication can calm him down enough for the confidence building exercises
to work then we can slowly wean him back off. That is the hope anyways.
Because of the holidays the obedience classes in our area were taking hiatus' until January so we're
enrolled to start then with both of our boys. Other than the above mentioned problems (which are all
brought on by the separation anxiety) Cooper is doing really well with his training. He sits-stays well,
his come-on-command is wonderful, and if I give him my warning sound he immediately stops. He
does excellent on the leash, no pulling and walks by my side, and getting better and better on the leash
in public. I almost wonder if there will be anything to work on by the time we start the obedience
classes! He even "finds" things really well:) He sits-stays in the kitchen, we'll show him the toy we want
him to find then we go off to another room and wander around and finally hide the toy somewheres.
When we return to the kitchen we tell Cooper "go find your toy!" and he'll run off and search around
with his nose and come prancing back to the kitchen with it, happy as can be!
Its great fun and he loves having the "job" of finding the toy.
Well, those are the updates for now! We'll be back in a month and let you all know how the classes
are going:)
UPDATE 10/15/07 - Cooper is doing magnificently! I picked him up from Bridgit and Richard's
house yesterday afternoon and he was, of course, wonderful in the car. His profile says he's not leash
trained, but he does really well. He has to be reminded every now and then to not pull but other than
that (and that he likes to lean on you LOL) he does great. We went for several walks yesterday around
the yard and a nice long walk around the neighborhood yesterday and a jog/walk this morning and he
improves his leash manners each time!
Akela and Rashka are adjusting much quicker than I expected! After dinner last night Matthew and I
were watching the last of the Pats game with Cooper laying down at our feet and both cats came
downstairs and jumped up on the couch with us :) Cooper definitely shows interest in them but from his
body language its a "they're just little dogs, I want them to play with me!" kind of interest. There has
been absolutely no aggression and we haven't allowed any chasing so I think things will continue to go
well (especially since Akela has even started to approach him and touch noses when he is sitting/laying).
He had an accident last night but I attributed it to his counter-surfing-3 lbs of beef-incident at his foster
home before I picked him up yesterday LOL. If nothing else it was a good way to teach us to make
sure we don't leave anything unattended- even for a minute! We'll try leaving him home for a couple
hours while I go out for errands this morning and see how it goes. I'll be sure to update!
Matthew is so happy to have him here, we both love him already. Cooper quickly showed us his goofy
personality so we know he will be very happy and fit in perfectly around here. We feel that his minor
anxiety issues will be resolved the more he settles in and we are more than willing to work on them with
him.
Thanks for such a great dog SCBR!!
10/14/07 - Cooper has been adopted!
10/10/07 - Richard picked up Cooper from his owner this AM. She stated the reason she was giving
up Cooper is that her husband became nervous about him, he apparently barked at him a lot & her
husband did not like him anymore (though she was in love with Cooper & would have kept him if she
could have).
Cooper rode home a true Boxer gentleman...sound asleep in the back! When they stopped for a potty
walk and a drink, my husband had to call me and have me give out SCBR's web address to all of
Cooper's adoring
fans! One man in particular an aquaintence from work saw Cooper and was on his Blackberry right
away to look at the adoption process. I don't think Cooper will be homeless for very long.
WARNING!!! He is a true "puppy-boy" he appears to have a lot of growing to do. His paws are
HUGE but, nowhere near as big as his HEART! The biggest problem so far is not having enough laps
to go around when
only one of us is home with 2 boxers!! So far, Hercules has been a gentleman. Although he does not
understand why he has his leash on IN the house. :) I'll keep you updated!
10/2/07 - I just brought Cooper back from the vet as he was favoring his left hind leg. He has a
sprained Left hind cruciate ligament. It doesn't appear to be ruptured. He is on an anti-inflammatory.
Two vets aged him at just 12-14 months old. A bit younger than the SPCA did but still close.
We looked on all the paperwork I recieved for him and no where was the heartworm test. I know you
had him down as negative on his profile but no heartworm paperwork came with him. We did the
heartworm test again and a lyme test. He was negative on both.
I applied his frontline today and gave him his heartgard. He has settled in like this has always been his
home. He listens really well. He slept great last night on his new bed next to the girls. They were all
playing with toys this morning. We have not left him alone with the other boxer residents in the house
yet. I will try for 10-15 minutes later when I go down to the horse barn.
Cooper has stolen my husbands and my hearts already. We really love him already.
10/1/07 - Cooper made it home to Peppermint Hill Farm safely. The two female boxer residents took
to him very quickly. All played together and ate together. Now they are all laying down together. My
husband is thrilled because Cooper seems to be favoring him and staying with him. My two females
have always stayed with me and my husband was always a little jealous. Now he doesn't have to be.
Cooper feels right at home. It feels like he has always been here.
10/1/07 - I got Cooper from his foster mom and did his adoption this morning. Boy is he a nice dog!
8/15/07 - Cooper has made his way into SCBR, many thanks to Stephanie at our local SPCA and Gail.
Cooper was found as a stray and brought to the shelter. He was found with his leash and collar, but no
ID just around the corner from the shelter at a busy intersection. He is very lucky not to have been hit
by a car. He was held for the mandatory stray hold but no one came to claim him.
Cooper was adopted by Stephanie's brother. He was with the family for 2 weeks and was fabulous
with their other dog and kids. Unfortunately they were unable to work with his anxiety. Cooper has a fit
when crated and has broken out & even gotten stuck trying to get out of his crate. Stephanie being the
wonderful person (and boxer lover) that she is took Cooper to foster, began working with him and
contacted SCBR. Cooper was great with her dogs as well, but very interested in the cats.
Cooper will need a home where someone will be home more often. Cooper was left uncrated when she
went to work/wasn't home. Cooper is not destructive, he just some accidents (urination only). His
accidents were always in the same spot, so a potty pad or old towel was left in that spot whenever she
left. Sure enough Cooper would go on it. Cooper is otherwise housebroke, no accidents unless left
alone. He is currently on Clomicalm to help ease his anxiety.
Cooper is a friendly, happy, bouncy boy that seems to love everyone he meets. He met the resident
Boston Terrier at his foster home without any problems. Cooper is about 1 1/2 years old, fawn with
white and just an all around sweet dog. He will make a wonderful pet for someone who can overlook
an occasional accident in exchange for boxer kisses. Cooper is neutered and fully vaccinated. The only
thing this sweet boy needs is a special family to love him. More updates coming soon......
