3/15/07 - Cleopatra continues to be one of the best foster girlies ever. She is the sweetest most easy
going dog. Her crate is now clean most days and seldom an accident in the house. Housebreaking is
coming along very nicely. Cleo loves everyone she meets humans and other canines. I brought home a
new foster the other night, an 11 pound Puggle. Cleo was a bit unsettled for all of 10 minutes now Cleo
and Daisy the Puggle are good pals. She could certainly be adopted to a home with a small dog.
Cleo is so happy with any bit of attention she is given when I pet her that rear end of hers wiggles and
whips around like nothing I have ever seen before. If the other dogs are in the area they get bumped
around and hip checked. It is pretty funny to watch. My dogs just give her a funny look and move out
of the way. Cleo has recovered from her surgeries. Her breath is so much better after having that bad
tooth removed. I can tell she feels better too now that it is gone and the infection has cleared up. Cleo
isn't much for playing with toys yet but is learning. Yesterday all the dogs got a bone as a special treat
she laid in her crate and really went to town on it. It was cute to watch. I don't think she was given
many special treats and with the condition of her tooth I don't know if she could have chewed it
anyway.
Cleo has a silly underbite and her tongue hangs out most of the time. I think it is adorable. Especially
when she settles down to nap with that big tongue of hers hanging out. Cleo has very nice manners,
does not jump on us, doesn't jump on counters, doesn't chew things she's not supposed too, crates
wonderfully and is just about housebroke. Cleo is definitely gaining a few much needed pounds while
here, I noticed yesterday her collar was too tight and had to move it a notch. Better get you
applications in for this sweetie she really shouldn't be in rescue very long.
3/3/07 - Miss Cleopatra made her way to the vet yesterday and she walked to the car then into the vet
office all on her own!!! The trick? My 4 year old son. Nathan and Cleo have bonded so well that if
Nathan walks just slightly ahead of us Cleo follows because she doesn't like to be far from her "kid".
When we walked in the vet tech said "She's walking!". I told her my little trick, she thought it was
adorable and it worked to get Cleo into the exam room too. When I picked her up last night another
tech brought her out, she said "I heard Cleo and your son I have quite a bond". It seems the 2 of them
were the talk of the office. The feeling is mutual too, I've had tons of dogs through my house since my
son was an infant. Within 5 minutes of meeting Cleo, Nathan said "Mom, she's my kind of dog".
Yesterday, he also asked the tech "Are you going to take good care of her?"
Cleo was spay and had a bad molar removed. I had noticed 2 small lumps on her side, the vet looked
at them on her first appointment and wasn't concerned so we are just going to monitor them. When she
was there for surgery yesterday he found one on her chest that he didn't like the looks of so it was
removed. These will just have to be watched by her new family.
Cleo had the worst breath I have ever smelled on a dog. The infected, rotten molar certainly explains it.
When I called to check on her yesterday the vet tech said Cleo had tons of hair and debris between her
teeth. We have NO idea what could have caused this. Luckily the doctor and his staff cleaned
everything out for us. She also got a glowing "report card" she was a very good girl.
I do believe Cleo would be happiest in a home with another easy going dog (she gets a lot of
confidence from them). I say easy going because I think one of the dogs in Cleo's past home wasn't too
nice to her. If my dogs try to play with her, go near her when she has a toy or by the crate while she's
eating she cowers. She is getting better, playing a bit and learning my crew is friendly. I do worry about
her being with a bossy type dog. She won't defend herself and would constantly get pushed around.
Kids are definitely in Cleo's future too, that will make her very happy.
The only negative I have to say about Cleo is she is not 100% housebroke and does pee in her crate. I
believe she spent a lot of time crated at her previous home. We are working on this, it is just going to
take some time. I do need to get better pictures of Cleo, the current ones do her no justice she is cute
as a button. More updates coming soon.....
2/27/07 - Cleopatra made her way to the vet yesterday. She weighed in at 45 pounds and is now up to
date on vaccinations. She is being spay on Thursday 3/1 and also having a bad molar removed. She
was a very good girl at the vet, a bit nervous but very nicely behaved. I put the leash on Cleo and we
headed out the door for her appointment as soon as we got outside she laid down. I had to carry her to
the car, then into the vets office. I also had to carry her back to the car when we were done. It is going
to take a little bit of time/patience to get her used to the leash. We will try walking using treats and see if
that helps.
The funny part of the day came when we got home from the vet. I went to get Cleo out of the car, she
was hesitant, I grabbed her leash and I was just about to carry her when she looked around and
realized she was back at her foster home. She leaped out of the car and bounded up the driveway,
down the sidewalk and up the steps to the front porch. Once inside the house she busted out into the
best Boxer happy dance I have ever seen. Running around and licking the dogs that weren't crated then
running over to the crates and kissing the others through the crate doors. I have to say the fact that she
likes it here so much brought a tear to my eye.
Cleo is going outside now to do her business without me forcing her. She doesn't go too far and usually
potties within a few feet of the back door but we are making progress. She is much more relaxed here
too and has started to get more active. Cleo is a really sweet girl, we are definitely enjoying fostering
her. She is coming around so nicely. She has been fabulous with the other 5 dogs here and my 11 & 4
year children.
2/24/07 - Cleopatra made her way to her foster home on Saturday, she is such a tiny little thing. She
was surrendered to rescue with Abigail and Shadow. Her owner passed away and her children were
left to deal with the dogs. Luckily for these dogs one of her sons contacted SCBR and got them into
rescue. They were going to be put to sleep if rescue couldn't take them. It was even said that one of
her sons was going to shoot them. Thankfully that didn't happen.
Cleo was very good for her 2 hour car ride to her foster home. Once here she tried to settle in but was
just too stressed. I gated her in the family room with me and tried to coax her out of the crate. She
would eventually come over to me only to run back in. The only time she seemed to perk up is when
she heard my kids voices. Last night I decided to let them meet. Cleo instantly relaxed and seems to
really enjoy the company of children. Last night she met 3 of the other canine residents and that went
very well. She seemed to relax even more and seemed happy to be around the other dogs. She met my
youngest dog Dominic and my other foster Mimi this morning. Everything went well, she has been out
with them all day. She actually quite submissive with the other dogs. I usually don't introduce new
fosters to my kids/dogs so soon but Cleo needed this to gain some confidence.
Cleo is horrified to go outside, I basically have to drag her out the dog and even then she won't do her
business. I thought maybe she would do better with the other dogs but going out with them hasn't
helped. Hopefully she will get the idea. She isn't used to a leash. When I picked her up yesterday the
owners son told me "she hasn't learned to walk on a leash yet". Imagine that! 4 years old and never
walked! Cleo will learn what it's like to be loved and cared for. She's eating like a little piggy and can
definitely stand to gain a few pounds. Cleo had a bath yesterday not only was she filthy but she had
some fleas. She smells great and is flea free now. Looks for more updates, this little sweetie is going to
make a nice addition to a very lucky family. She just needs to be given some time to adjust to all the
changes.
