UPDATE 5/9/07 - Charlie has made terrific progress in the past month. Our entire family, ages 6-73,
has been very determined to do everything possible to give Charlie every opportunity to adjust. With
patience (sometimes in tremendous amounts more than we thought we had) he is almost
unrecognizable as the dog we first brought home. From day two it was clear that Charlie did not
know how to be with people, let alone in a house. Though not aggressive, he had no sense of
physical boundaries or impulse control when he wanted to play. Not normal, jumpy, energetic boxer
play, but lunge at you, rip at your sleeves, try to rip off your gloves and bruise your arms & hands in
the process behavior. Whether from lack of training or inappropriate training, it was not good.
Combined with the stress of new surroundings, new people, new "pack leader", new everything, it
was not easy for him or us. Fortunately, we have had good resources in our trainer, vet and friends
with well trained dogs, not to mention that Charlie has found his match in stubborness with this family
;>)
Charlie wants to please and he is a fast learner. The gentle leader is a great training tool and has
allowed us to run together as well as to take long walks, often with several children in tow. He was
definitely not sure what to make of the little people around here at first, but now finds them quite
entertaining and a good source of affection and of course, play - the good kind:) There is construction
work going on in Town and he is a bit ancy with all of the activity, but is doing much better with each
day. He is learning to greet people, always sitting before saying hello. Yesterday, in particular, there
were several folks in and out of the house and he didn't even need to be told to sit each time someone
came in. Now that's progress. We will watch & guide him carefully for a long time to come; we have
no desire to set him up for trouble. When in the house he has a lightweight lead, just in case a verbal
command is not enough, though he hasn't had to be crated for even anything minor in the last week.
We keep a spray bottle handy on the kitchen counter, which is, at the moment, his biggest temptation.
Even our 6-yr-old knows how to use it appropriately and only if a verbal command is ignored.
It is nearly 9AM and Charlie is alseep at my feet while I type, having just gotten back from a
6-mile-run; he is a great partner, not even deterred by a wandering gaggle of peacocks in the road
(yes, I did say peacocks). While I work he will be content to just lie at my feet; at lunch we'll play
some ball together and he may play out in the yard for a bit while I continue to work. Later on he'll
take his perch in the front window to wait patiently for the boys to come home from school. Then it's
more play and another nap at the feet of boys busy with homework and such. When my husband
comes ashore it will be dinnertime and an evening walk. He'll most likely wander into his crate for the
night once he tires of our family chatter and story telling and gets his fill of our affections for him. Life
is good.
4/6/07 - Charlie has been adopted!
3/28/07 Charlie went for his first ride with me and my son today. He seemed to really enjoy riding.
Each day Charlie improves. I discovered today that he knows the command for down. He must of
had some training before coming into rescue. He is housebroken. He will make the most loving dog
any family could ever ask for. The important things are to reinforce good behavior (yummy treats), a
routine to establish some stability in his life, exercise, exercise, and love. What a wonderful time of
year to get a young pup. Charlie deserves a dedicated, loving family and in turn he will give to you a
friendship that will last forever!!
3/26/07 - Hi everyone. My name is Charlie and my foster mom says I am the most handsome foster, I
believe her. I have only been with my foster family for just a couple days and I am learning a lot. I
love to go for walks, play with my toys and sit with my foster mom. I am learning to play nice with my
toys, but my foster mom always reminds me with a quick NO when I get too excited. She makes me
understand that she is the boss and I am ok with that. I know I will find a home soon cause my foster
mom says so. How can you resist me?
3/25/07 - Hi All, Thanks to Barb and Tom, Charlie has arrived safe and sound. Thanks to Jeanne for
coming with me to meet my first foster. I could not of asked for a better foster and this dog will find a
home fast. He is soo loving. It has only been a couple of hours but these things are true- He know's
his name, loves toys, seems thru a crate door not be aggresive towards my dogs (lucky Boxer and
Nikkie Sheltie), great on his leash, loves to go for a walk but I don't think he was walked a lot
because he seems to be confused why is he walking so long, not afraid of my husband who is almost
7 feet tall, and loves my 15 year old son. He gives kisses a lot and he is a great kisser!! I know there
is a lot to learn about him in the days to come but from what I see he is an awesome, eager to please
dog. Pure puppy. He's a one year old bouncing boxer boy! What an absolute love, lots of kisses. He
loves playing and exploring. Some lucky family will be very fortunate to get him.
