UPDATE 8/16/07 - Well, our handsome little Chance-man turned one year old today! Happy Birthday
Chance! He had a banana honey cake with cream cheese frosting to celebrate! Chance has gained
almost 8 pounds since coming to live with us. He needs it, the skinny little dude! His true boxer puppy
personality is finally starting to shine through...he walks around with his tail held high and constantly
wagging. He wants to play all day long but once 8:00 pm hits, he's sound asleep! He can be mischief
too, if we take our eyes off of him...just take a look at the molding in the spare bedroom! LOL! He
enjoys playing with his toys and he and Spike usually play a game of keep away with one of them. It is a
riot to watch! He was awful at going up and down stairs when he first got here but now he has mastered
them. He is a bit fearful when meeting strangers...especially men. I am hoping that once he gets into
obedience training, we can work on that. He loves my mother and doesn't even bark when she comes
over but he takes a while to warm up to men. Our obedience training was supposed to start on August 1
but not enough people signed up so the trainer has post-poned the class to September. Chance does
pretty well on most commands but I'd like to work on his confidence. We are so thrilled that he is here!
We are also thrilled that he has started giving out tiny little unsolicited boxer kisses...much unlike his
brother's face washing licks! LOL! Happy birthday again, little man!
UPDATE 7/10/07 - Chance is doing GREAT!!! He and his new brother Spike get along like they were
litter mates!! There were no problems with the initial introductions, in fact, Spike pretty much wanted to
play within the first 10 minutes of meeting Chance. Chance was great on the LONG ride home,(9 hours)
a little wimpering but he soon relaxed and cuddled with Faith. Faith and I each took seperate weeks off
from work to help Chance adjust to his new home and to make sure there were no issues between he and
Spike, and for the most part there were no problems. When we got him, we were told he was a bit of a
fussy eater, but we haven't noticed that at all. He eats all his food and at times he licks the bowl too, so it
seems he likes the food we feed to Spike. And he's gained 3 lbs. so far, and he needs it!! There have
been a couple of times he had small accidents, but that was our fault of not recognizing his body language.
And he has done a bit of damage to our spare rooms mattress, but really no big deal. He starts his
obedience training in August but we're working on some basic stuff ahead of time to help him learn
quicker. He also joined his brother Spike for his first off lead meeting. We found this group thru Craigslist,
basically the group gets together and lets their dogs run loose in a closed off field. Spike has made a lot of
friends this way and at this last meeting it was Chance's turn to make friends. And he did, making friends
with the group organizers Boxer and a Weimaraner. So all in all, Chance is doing real well but he does
have a couple of medical issues were dealing with. One is he still had his urinary tract infection when we
picked him up, so he went back on meds for that. But we also found out that he has a genetic condition
with the knees of his rear legs which we found out thru x-rays. The vet seems optimistic that he'll grow out
of it per se. Where he's still young, his bones haven't yet fully grown so we'll have to wait and see,
otherwise he may require surgery. We're real happy Chance has joined our family and we're sure he's
happy to be with us too!!
6/16/07 - Chance has been adopted!
5/16/07 - Boy does time fly! Chance has been here over a month now and we just can't figure out why.
He is just an all around good pup. Chance's urinary tract infection has cleared up and he no longer is
having "accidents" at the pup tent, but he still needs to be crated at night as he has his nights and days
mixed up and if not crated at night, will do his business inside the open doored crate, go figure that one
out! He continues to grow in leaps and bounds, it seems like his front is finally catching up with his back
legs and he is putting on some needed pounds. He crates like a dream, goes in and lays down without
any fuss. He still needs someone that is home most of the day though as he is still a puppy and needs to
burn off that puppy energy. Chance would do just fine in a home with other dogs, we can't be sure about
cats as we don't have any, but I do believe that with his age, he would be able to adjust to a cat. This age
is always hard to do write ups for, he shouldn't ever be denied a chance to live in a home with young
children, everyone knows that kids and dogs go together, but he can still forget his manners and jump up
or chase and nip at young kids. If you have young humans around, you will need to be very vigilant and
one step ahead of Chance, he would never intentionally hurt anyone, he doesn't have a mean bone in his
body, but little ones can be scratched very easily.
Chance's fur is as soft as bunny fur and I do believe that his tail is as long as his body! I don't think
anyone ever gets used to a Boxer with a tail. I have actually figured out that the Boxer nub does indeed
go 100 miles an hour, tails take a bit longer. Maybe I have hit upon a new scientific theory! His bottom
teeth have a tendency to stick out after he licks his chops, it actually looks like he is smiling like those
funny birthday cards you see where the animals have over exaggerated teeth. Well, time's awasting, call
about this boy, you won't be sorry and you'll have a great friend!
4/14/07 - Chance continues to do very well here at the Pup Tent. This past Tuesday, he made his way to
the Doctor for a bit of a check up. He started to have some accidents in the house and we felt that they
were more than normal puppy accidents so we made our way to see the doc armed with a urine sample.
There was bacteria in the urine so Chance has started on a 14 day course of antibiotics to clear things up.
the medicine seems to be working as the accidents are becoming less frequent. This guy is your typical
puppy, he has all the characteristics that go along with being 8 months old. He loves to chew on almost
anything, so we are very careful to watch what he's got in his mouth and redirect him to appropriate and
safe items. He is playful and energetic and can then turn around and become the biggest wet noodle I've
ever seen! He will be outside running and chasing and then come in and literally plop down and become
bend-a-dog. He has even been so relaxed a few times that he has slithered off the couch right onto the
floor and hardly wakes up. He still is a bit thin, his stool sample was clean so it will just take time to put
some weight on this guy, he doesn't have a very large appetite so bulking up will take time. He is friendly
to everyone he meets and is waiting for his turn at furever!
4/4/07 - The Pup Tent would like to welcome our newest guest, Chance. Chance is 7 months old and an
owner surrender with his litter mate Bubba. Chance has only been here about 15 hours, so we really
don't have alot of useful info on his personality yet, but I can tell you that he is a very petite boy, has a tail
and dew claws, I guess he was born in a shelter, he looks to be purebred. He has very long legs, his
back end actually looks higher than the front, like his back legs have grown and the rest hasn't caught up
yet. He needs to put on a few pounds, and he has a small head with an old man's face if you get my drift.
The one picture is my old girl, the lead Supreme Dutchess sitting next to him so you can see just how
small his head is! I really can't tell if he will fill out and be a big boy, but I do think he will get taller.
Maybe like other boxers, he will take time to fill out. So far, he gets along just fine with the resident dogs,
Sundays are open breakfast days, and he barked at each and every person coming in, I know it's not a
mean bark, he is just so young, doesn't really know what to do, so he'll bark. He warms right up and is
friendly to all. Once we get his shots records faxed over, we can determine if he needs any shots or
heartworm test done. More to come, Chance says "take a chance on me", you know you won't be sorry!
