BRANDY
UPDATE 5/4/08 - Hi this is Brandy’s skin sister, giving you and update on Brandy. She is such a
great dog and loves attention. Although she loves the outdoors, she does not like it when it is very warm.
A week ago we chained her outside with a dog bone, and she loved it until we went inside for a few
minutes. We came back outside and she had the bone in her mouth and was staring at the door. Brandy
just doesn’t like being outside alone. We recently discovered that she loves tennis balls. At first she
didn’t know what it was. She has three of them in the house and five or six more containers in the
basement. She loves playing fetch with them outside and just pawing it around. Brandy has learned a few
more tricks. She now knows how to give high-five, go inside the crate and give hugs! She recently had a
checkup at the vets and she is doing fine. We got a little bump on her arm checked out. They tested it for
cancer, but it turns out to just be a cyst. The vet said that Brandy is at a perfect weight. She is still running
about 45 minutes to an hour a day. Brandy is a great boxer girl and we are so glad to have her.

UPDATE 1/28/08 - Brandy is doing great! She is very comfortable and at ease with us.  We have been
running our four miles each morning, even in the cold.   I put on her fleece and off we go.  She is at home
for 4-5 hours alone in between family members coming and going. We do not use the crate during this
time and Brandy has not gotten into trouble or had an accident. At dinner time, she puts herself into the
crate without us saying a word.  She does not beg at the table or when people are eating, a marked
change from past boxers.  She is so well-behaved and eager to please!  We have yet to have to
reprimand her at home at all.  Obedience school was another story, but ended with great success.  After
not being able to participate with other dogs week one due to aggression towards other dogs, she was the
“star student on week six. She not only participated in the ring, but sat aside the other dogs and
came to me at command thirty feet away.  Others were amazed that this was the same dog. She  now
even allows my mother’s Chihuahua to lick her face.  They actually can coexist for hours in the same
room. Brandy loves playing with her chew toys engages whoever she can in play.  We do not have many
details as to Brandy’s past, although we know life was not too good to her.  It truly is amazing how
she was able to gain trust in people again and enjoy a good life with us.

UPDATE - 12/28/07- Brandy is doing wonderfully at home with us.  She continues to be well-behaved
and obedient and we have had no problems at home with her.  Dog training has been a bit of a struggle,
but she has shown great improvement since the first week back in November.  The first week she was so
nervous she barked for the first fifteen minutes non-stop.  This is very much out of character from the
sweet, docile dog at home. She also showed some aggression towards the other dogs so we did not join
others in the ring for the first few weeks.  The owner and trainer was very patient (surprised we werenâ
€™t asked to leave) and understood that Brandy must have had little socialization with other dogs.  So I
maintained her outside the ring and just calmed her down while others participated.  We practiced all the
drills at home and Brandy did just great.  By week three, she was a bit better but still anxious.  The trainer
suggested giving her a good tug on the collar and remaining firm with her and offering much praise. Hot
dogs helped too. This did work and week four we actually got to participate in the ring.  Last week,
Brandy did great as soon as we got there.  She was very relaxed and even entered the building without
barking.  Then she participated with the others to the point she was completely focused on me and the
commands.  We even practiced sit, stay, and come thirty feet away without holding her at all side by side
with the other dogs!  It was amazing.  My guess is that Brandy has gained trust in us and has responded
well to praise and a firm tug of the collar.  I am now working on transferring this to our daily runs when we
meet another dog and when we have unfamiliar guests come to the door. She has shown some
improvement here too.  She continues to climb up on laps and snuggle whenever she can.  She loves the
snow but not for too long.  Her favorite spot is in front of the gas fireplace where she warms herself as she
peacefully naps.  She is a very special boxer girl!

UPDATE 11/28/07 - Brandy has made wonderful transition to our home.  She is so sweet and loveable,
constantly looking for a pat or to play.  She quickly became accustomed to the routines of the house.  She
spends about four to five hours a day in her crate when no one is home.  Other than that, she has free
reign of the house with no problems at all.  Each night she climbs up in my lap, puts her snout on my
shoulder, and snores away.  She is a sound sleeper, snuggling all night in daughter’s beds.  She enjoys
our four mile runs in the morning and walks at night.  She does not like to be outdoors alone, mostly likely
due to some past experiences. The vet said she is in great health.  Someone at the shelter took very good
care of her.  She thinks she may even be closer to two or three rather than three or four years old.  She
also said Brandy’s weight is now ideal at 55 pounds.  Brandy is getting a bit better around other
dogs.  Obedience school was a challenge the first night.  Brandy got very anxious and some what
aggressive with the other dogs.  She did not understand how they played and got very nervous as they
greet one another. Each week she has gotten less tense and is responding to the commands.  We actually
can now participate in the ring with the other dogs.  Brandy is very intelligent and a quick learner.  Our
family was devastated when our last boxer (coincidentally also named Brandy) had to be put down last
month.  I often questioned whether I put her down to soon, wondering if we should have waited another
month or so.  I now know that this Brandy was meant to be with our family and the timing was just right
for us to be joined with this beautiful boxer girl.

10/28/07 - Brandy has been adotped! Brandy has just left for her new home in NH! The first thing the
gentleman said when he came through the door: "Isn't she beautiful"? His wife said that the pictures on the
web site just did not do her justice at all. The young lady (skin sister) will be going with her mother to take
Brandy to obedience. I believe they said that she already has an appointment for classes. I think this is a
very good match and Brandy will be the "Queen of her Castle" and a Princess of the family.

10/24/07 - Brandy has been here since the 14th. With this amount of time I figured that she would be well
acclimated to the sights, sounds and smells of our abode.  The first time she met Sam, she didn't like him.
Rose still will not go near her. Today, Sam and Brandy met again, and everything seemed fine. We took
them outside and they were fine while we held the leashes. We decided to drop the leashes. Sam initiated
play and it looked like it was going to be ok. But it wasn't! She did not want to play nice and went after
him. On this basis I am going to say that she should be an only dog. She deserves a home where she can
be the queen and center of attention. She should also be the only animal. No cats!  All by herself she is
sweet, lovable, playful, well behaved and a very nice dog.

10/21/07 - Brandy has been here just over a week. So far, she has been very good. However, she has
not yet met the "gang" and I really think she would do better as an only dog.  The few chance encounters
have not been too friendly. Maybe in time?  I would strongly suggest that she not have CATS in her future
home. All
she wants to do here is chase them. She is on full muscle alert when a cat is near. I do think she would be
fine with children of all ages. She has met a few little ones and was fine. It just seems to be other animals
though it was reported that she did live with a couple of other dogs in her past life. Brandy has lovely
manners, comes when called, is very patient after eating and waiting her turn to go outside and is very
loving. She loves to cuddle and be petted! She seems to be trusting around us, but not the other dogs.

10/16/07 - Brandy has had some training. She sits, downs, shakes hands and will stay. She walks pretty
well on leash, is housebroken and is no trouble at night-sleeps through. She loves to run and prance
around the yard, will chase a ball, but won't give it back. Prefers to drop it about 6 feet away! She likes to
play and roughhouse, but is fairly gentle. She is eating well, doesn't seem to have any stomach or bowel
problems and is very bright and alert! She has allowed us to take her dish away while she was eating. At
least she isn't food aggressive with people. We shall see how it goes with the other dogs. We are waiting a
few days to do real introductions. She is very interested in the cats, but I'm not sure if she wants to chase
them or be friends. Time and lots of caution will tell.

10/14/07 - Brandy arrived at the Log Cabin after a long ride from R.I. There are a lot of question marks
in her top box and I will try to answer them as I get to know her better. She is a very nice looking Brindle
girl with some white on her paws. She has only met the gang through the gate and crate and it is difficult to
tell if she likes them or not. She did eat a good supper and I am now waiting for her to "go". She has not
gone since she got here!

SOME INFO FROM ONE OF BRANDY'S TRANSPORT VOLUNTEERS:

10/14/07 -
Brandy is a VERY SWEET, smaller Boxer Girl. Brandy was a NEGLECT CASE. The
reason she was at the shelter so long (about 6 months) was in part due to the pending court case against
her owner. I saw the pictures the Animal Control Officer has as part of the evidence file.  This poor girl
weighed 44 pounds at nearly 4 years old. She was skin and bones!! (Her owner was finally charged
formally with animal cruelty).  What I saw when I picked her up was a very energetic, pleasant girl. I
wouldn't say she was "Happy" I think she will take a while to be trusting of people. She knows basics, Sit,
stay, No and down.  A FIRM NO and she stops pulling on the leash. She can definitely use to add some
more weight. She seems eager to please and have a family of her own. She will be a wonderful addition to
any family. She crashed in the back seat for most of the ride, we rode for over an hour and not a peep
from her. She went potty as soon as we got her out at the rest area. Best wishes for Brandy to find a
loving, FOREVER home. The Animal control officer was crying when we left, this is a very special boxer
girl.     Brigid
