BONGO
NOTE ** Because I am still a baby, I will only be placed in a home where someone is home often, such as
retired, work at home, work opposite shifts, stay at home parents, etc.

12/11/07 - Bongo is doing wonderful. He had his leg amputated a little over a week ago and has
adjusted very well. The reason he came to Maine for his surgery is because we are going to be adopting
him. We adopted two senior boxers from SCBR and we had to have them both put to sleep this fall. The
house was empty without a boxer of our own. The fosters just aren't the same. So we asked Leann if we
could adopt him. Now as soon as he is healthy he will be moved from pending to adopted.

10/29/07 - Just a quick update on Bongo's surgery because I know many people are following his story.
He won't be having surgery on Tuesday as planned. I got a call Friday night while I was on my way to
the volunteer meeting saying that they were closing the doors at the vets office. Apparently the vet that
owns the practice sold it and decided to just close up until the new owners take over. Thankfully the
other vet that worked there had the decency to call me and tell me what was going on otherwise I would
have brought him in Tuesday morning. She was just as shocked as I was. We just scheduled his surgery
on Wednesday and on Friday they were closing up!  So I have to get all his vet work & x-rays and
basically start over getting him established with a new doctor. Hopefully all his medical records will be
mailed to me as promised and I can get him into see another vet soon.

10/24/07 - We went to see the specialist last week and got some discouraging news. First his condition is
actually carpus vergus (meaning turning towards the midline) not carpus valgus. It is going to take multiple
surgeries to fix his leg and even with that his future is unknown. His condition is affecting his wrist and
elbow joints (originally we thought it was only the wrist). The elbow is already pretty seriously out of
alignment and according to the specialist the elbow is the least forgiving joint in a dogs body. Even with
surgeries he could have pain, limping, early arthritis etc.

After getting the report from the specialist and consulting with 2 other veterinarians it has been decided
that amputating the leg is best for Bongo and his future. Bongo went to the vet on Monday for his 2nd
puppy vaccine. He had a huge growth spurt and weighed in at 12.6 pounds. During his growth spurt the
bow in his leg also became much more severe. Bongo is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday Oct. 30th. He
will have to stay at the vet overnight but hopefully he will be back in his foster home the next day and we
can begin to help him learn to walk with 3 legs.

Bongo is otherwise a very healthy, happy well adjusted pup. He adores all the other dogs and kids. He is
quiet as can be in his crate (he has an occasional accident in the crate). He's getting the idea of
housebreaking and is learning to go stand at the back door when he wants to go out. He sits very nicely
on command. He isn't too fond of walking on the leash but he is learning. He's currently eating Canidae
dog food and is doing very well on that. It is going to be very important that Bongo's new family keeps
him in good physical condition preferably even a few pounds underweight. It will also work to Bongo's
advantage that he has a natural tail to help with balance. Please don't let the fact that he will only have 3
legs scare you. I've met many dogs with an amputated limb that can do everything other dogs can do.
Keep little Bongo Boy in your thoughts. I'll be sure to keep everyone updated on his progress.

9/29/07 - Little Baby Bongo arrived in his foster home Thursday. He is a surrender from Tennessee. I
would like to thank my rescue friend Krista for picking him up, keeping him over night at her home in
Kentucky and getting him to Ohio the next morning. From there 2 very special boxer lovers helped get
him a bit closer to me. Thank You Shelley and Nancy!

Bongo rode wonderfully the 4 + hours home with me. We made it just in time for his vet appointment.
Bongo has a problem with his left front leg. He had x-rays and was diagnosed with a Carpus Valgus
Deformity. Basically the joint is growing outward which is forcing his paw inward. The joint actually looks
bowed. The first day I had him he was walking on it OK, but he does favor that leg sometimes. He will
need a consultation with a surgeon to see about having his leg fixed. He was vaccinated and otherwise
got a clean bill of health. Everyone at the vets office loved him and so does everyone he has met so far.
He's wonderful with the kids and isn't too bad with puppy nipping. He's feeling more comfortable here
now so he went from being pretty quiet to barking at the other dogs (to entice them to play) and crying
when he wants something.

He is doing amazingly well with housebreaking. As long as I get him out often enough he does great. He
instantly finds a spot and does his business. He sleeps soundly in the crate for about 6 hours at night.
During the day he will cry for a minute or two but settles down. Bongo is really a fun little pup. When he's
not bouncing and bounding through the house he likes to be held and get his belly rubbed. More updates
coming soon!
