ALI
UPDATE 10/31/08 - Wow how time has flown by.  It's been a year since we picked up Ali and it just
seems like he's been part of the family all his life.  We had a birthday party for him on Monday and he
was gracious enough to share all his birthday treats with his step-sisters, Nina & Zoe.  This Fall he has
been having a wonderful time running in the field looking for mice and all the other good smells that
happen when the field is cut for the last time of the season.  As the evenings get colder, he's becoming
quite the snuggle bunny and Nina & Zoe really have to work at getting the prime spot next to me on the
couch when Ali is around.  Although the rain doesn't deter him from going outside for any amount of
time to do his business, the colder it gets, the quicker he comes back to the door to get let in.  He has
been such a delight to have.  He has such great patience and is so appreciative of all he receives.  He is
also the most helpful boxer I've known when it comes to doing work in the garden - he stays right with
me and provides all the encouragement I need to finish the job.  I think that my life would be a bit empty
if I hadn't adopted Ali - I'm so glad I did.

UPDATE 4/30/08 - Ali is doing great after 6 months with us.  I could tell that he has become part of
the family when the other day I looked over to see Nina (1 of my other boxers) using him as a pillow
just like she does with her sister, Zoe.  Ali has been enjoying the warm weather with its opportunity to
be outside running in the yard or lying in the sun on the porch.  Two weeks ago I took him to a BRAD
at the Topsham PETCO.  He did very well and enjoyed each opportunity to meet and greet all the
people that stopped in.  I'm happy to say that after 6 months, my 18 year old cat, Max, is starting to
tolerate him.  Ali and Max still keep their distance, but at least Max doesn't bolt as soon as he sees Ali,
and Ali doesn't bother to take a run at Max.  A little progress is better than none.  May looks to be a
busy BRAD event month and Ali and I are looking forward to participating in some more.  So if you're
in the area of a BRAD in Southern Maine, stop in and hopefully Ali will be there to give you a big boxer
greeting.

UPDATE 1/27/08 -   Ali is doing wonderfully.  He's really settled in nicely.  He and our other 2 boxers
enjoy the warmth from the livingroom wood stove on the cold days & nights we've been having.  We've
just started to let him off leash when walking in the woods.  He is such a good dog, doesn't go too far
ahead and always comes when called.  I don't think there is a tree in the woods that hasn't been peed
on.  He and Nina & Zoe enjoy the freedom of exploring all the smells they can find.  He's such a goofy
boy.  He's added the comic relief that our household needed.  We're so happy that we added him to
our family.

UPDATE 1/1/08 - Ali continues to amaze us as to how well he's adjusting to his new home.  He's only
been here 2 months, but it seems like he's been part of the family for a long time.  Nina & Zoe have
really accepted him and Nina has taken to using him as a pillow, just as she does her sister ocasionnally.
Obedience class is over and he did very well.  He was once again the best behaved 4 legged guest
during a holiday event.  Just returned from a check up with the vet as he's been limping for a while and
anti-inflammatories weren't working.  Looks like he has an old ACL knee injury and some sort of injury
to his hip(vet not sure what he was seeing on the xrays, but since there was arthritis, there was some
sort of old injury).  Ali doesn't need surgery yet, but it's just a matter of time before he blows the ACL.
Oh well, hopefully that'll be far in the furture.  He is enjoying the snow, which is good since we seem to
have so much of it this year.  He is also have a wonderful time running between bird feeders barking at
the birds and squirrils until he's almost hoarse.  We look forward to learning more about Ali's little
quirks (we discover something new weekly), and also look forward to warmer weather when we can
spend more time outside playing and walking with him.

UPDATE 11/25/07 - Happy Holidays everyone.  Ali is fitting into his forever home very nicely.  He
and our 2 female boxers, Nina & Zoe, have become good buddies, unfortuntely not so friendly with our
cat, Max.  He learned the invisible fence quickly, and now has 2 acres to romp and play in.  Obedience
class is going well.  He's had 2 classes and is probably #2 for catching on quickly out of a class of 7
(We're very proud.)  He was such a good boy at Thanksgiving.  There were 7 people and 3 boxers
and he was the best behaved 4-legged guest at the party.  He's a bit of a barker inside when he gets
excited - which isn't appreciated by Nina and she lets him know.  We're hoping that more lessons from
Nina about using an inside voice(and not jumping) will do the trick.  Everyone has learned that there are
enough treats, toys, and food for all so we haven't had any problems with anyone becoming snarly
about what's theres.  Ali has 3 more obedience classes and we are looking forward to his continued
progress to becoming the gentleman that he know he can be.

10/27/07 - Ali has been adopted!

10/15/07 - Ali checking in!  This past Friday, I took a nice ride with the fostermom to do a BRAD,
that's an information table set up to introduce people to the wonderful world of Boxers, anyway, when I
got there, there were 2 other Boxers there and we all became fast friends.  During the time I was there,
people came through, young and old, I loved everyone and everyone complimented me on my good
manners.  My fostermom says she has me figured out, she says I don't have anxiety to the crate, you
see, I will willingly go in there during the day or evening and take a nap, I willingly go in when she says
"crate up", she says my problem is her, that whomever I bond with is what I stress about when they're
not with me.  The other day, she came out of her bedroom and I had drooled some in front of the door.
I don't obsess over her, but I sure do like her and like being around her.  She has taken to leaving me
uncrated when she has to leave, I don't bother anything, she is also having the two other members of the
family do things for me, maybe that will lessen my dependence.  Otherwise, I have become a very good
boy, no, I've always been a good, boy, I just became a better boy!  But I sure would like to have a
home of my own, it's tough on the humans and us dogs when we're in foster homes for so long, it's all
around sadness when we leave, won't you please consider taking me home?  Well, it's almost time for
the Sabres to play another hockey game, I didn't know too much about it until I got here, the whole
family yells at the TV whenever the home teams play, I will tell you, wherever I move to, I will forever
now be a Sabres and Buffalo Bills fan!

9/21/07 - Ali continues to be such a good guest here at the tent.  I should know better than to guess the
weight of dogs, when we went to the vet 2 weeks ago, he weighed in at 62lbs. He has filled out very
nicely and is at an ideal weight.  The vet and I discussed Ali's drooling in the crate and it was decided to
try some medication to get him over his crate stress.  He's been on it 2 weeks now and I really haven't
seen a big improvement, but the doc said it might take up to 3 weeks to kick in.  We are using the meds
and behavior modification to see if we can get things turned around.  Like I said before, in your house
he may not need to be crated when you leave, but here, for safety reasons, any foster is crated when no
one is home.  He gets along great with the other dogs here, maybe a home with another dog would be
the ticket for Ali.  He has figured out that food will come on a regular basis and waits in the kitchen at
preparation time even allowing the other dogs to be in the kitchen too.  Early on, he didn't want any of
the dogs in the kitchen and would chase them out while I was getting their bowls ready.  He is still
exhibiting some reluctance to give up a kong or chew toy that he has while he's in the crate, but we are
working hard on that.  I'm still not sure I would advise a home with small children as they might want to
take back a toy of theirs if he was to pick it up and he might not be so willing to let them.  He has done
wonderful with the influx of different people that come to our home, old and young, he is a gentleman
dog.  Not too much of anything gets him going, ok, maybe supper time!  Ali knows that his perfect
forever home is out there, please consider this boy for your heart and home.

9/5/07 - Ali has made his way back to the Pup Tent after a very brief stay with a family that hoped he
would be a good fit for them. He actually was a very good fit, the family have 2 very active young boys
(4 and 6) whom he adored but they did not want to try to deal with his anxiety when they left. He
wasn't crated and when left alone a few times, he found the garbage a tasty treat. So, he is back and
looking again for his forever family. I can tell you as reported by the family, he was excellent with their
children and wasn't the least bit shaken with two active boys and their toys. Ali walked back in and
picked up where he left off. We are going to make a visit tomorrow with the Boxer Doxer to discuss
possibly using a medication to get him over the hump of stressing in the crate. The funny thing is, he will
willingly go into the crate when given the command to "crate up" and he will even go in and lay down
and actually go to sleep, it's just when the door is closed and the humans leave, he stresses in the form
of excessive drooling. As reported previously, he did good when left uncrated in our home a few times
for a few hours, but then again, there were other dogs here. So maybe he would do alright with being
uncrated if there was another dog in the house. So, Ali is still looking for a fam where maybe someone
is home most of the time, maybe a human kid or two and maybe another dog? Anyway, w'ere happy to
see him again, we know his right situation is out there and will report back after our visit tomorrow to
the vet.

9/3/07 - Ali was adopted!

8/23/07 - Ali here, just checking in to see if you got your app in for me! I have been at the Pup Tent for
2 weeks now and I've learned so much, the humans tell me I still got some things to learn but I'm
coming around very nicely. I'm trying to get it down that I will be fed two times a day, I still wolf down
my own bowl of food and I still try to clean up everyone else's bowl, but I'm learning they don't like it.
The humans still feed me away from the other dogs and then I go outside until the other dogs are done.
I don't show any aggression, I just push them out of the way and finish what they didn't if I'm allowed
to, which much to my dismay, I'm not allowed to do! I have put on a few pounds already and they say
they can't see my spine anymore and my hip pointers are slowly dissappearing under some body fat, is
that a good thing? I try really hard not to jump on anyone and I haven't in a good while now. I like
visitors and have no problem with human company. The fridge guy was here last week and he and I
became good buds. I am also learning that if I get put in the crate when the humans leave, I'm not in for
hours. I still drool a small pool, but I do believe that I will get better with that. Fostermom has rotated
us around a few times, she will put the residents in crates and leave me out in the house for short
errands and I don't touch a thing. She thinks I would do fine if I was not crated. Here at the Tent,
crating is a safety thing when she leaves, it's just better to be safe than sorry, but the old girl here,
Dutchess never has to go in one, I guess at 11yrs old, she's earned that privelege. I guess things are
looking up for me, but I am becomming so comfortable here, the humans say it's my time to move on to
my own home, could it be yours? PS: did I mention that I don't have any accidents in the house at all?

8/14/07 - Ali continues to do well here at the Pup Tent. He is learning that "float like a butterfly" is not
what he should be doing. He literally jumps in the air off all fours especially around dinner time. He
appears to be housebroke, we have had no accidents at all, but then again, I am home most of the day
so he's free to go in and out. He continues to progress on good manners, he's learning not to meet
people with such gusto, he is learning that he will get fed twice a day. He has now earned the privalege
to sleep at night with the other dogs, he gets along with everyone. The only thing that he doesn't do well
with is crating. He drools puddles and puddles, he would do best in a home where there are opposite
shifts or someone is home most of the time. We are working on getting him more comfortable in the
crate, actually, he will go in and lay down, that's as long as the door is open!

8/10/07 - The Pup Tent is pleased to introduce Ali.  What we know so far, Ali was picked up as a
stray dog in Ohio and has spent the last 6 weeks in a pound set up for 48 dogs, he was one of 312.  He
shared a run with sometimes two other dogs.  The pound tries very hard to get their animals to rescues
and adopted, but sadly many aren't as "lucky" as Ali.  Anyway, the pound neutered him, dewormed,
heartworm tested him and brought him up to date on his shots.  He is VERY underweight, but with a
steady diet, he will get to where he needs to be.  For now, we are feeding him seperately from the three
dogs that live here as he wolfs down his food and wants to clean up the other's bowls and they're not
too appreciative of his kindness.  When he realizes that he will not be hungry anymore, he probably will
settle down with his eagerness to eat.  He was completely unfazed by the three resident canines and so
far has not had a problem with the one male and two females.  He seems very eager to please, but
needs direction, guidance and boundaries.  He will make someone a very nice companion.
