7/5/06 - Zuri & Joplin have been here for 10 days now & are doing great! The last few days they have
really started acting like normal boxers & are wiggling, kissing, running around & exploring everything
inside & out. They are both so sweet & really enjoy the attention & being treated like a loved pet
again. They are perfect in their crates, no fussing & no accidents. They have not had any accidents in
the house in over a week and do their business immediately when go out. You can tell they are not use
to being on leashes as they both tangle me, themselves & each other up when we try to walk together!
I usually end up with one or both trying to walk UNDER me as I'm walking, believe me, that's not easy
to do either! LOL When they first arrived I would take them out on leash to try to get them to go to
the bathroom too & they both held it for days! I found if I just let them go in my pen area, they went
right away. Took me a little bit to figure out that was the issue & you could tell they were both happy I
FINALLY caught onto THEIR needs! :)
Just the other day the girls realized I have a flight cage of several cockatiels in my livingroom & Zuri was
very fascinated with that. Joplin of course had to join in the "fun" & tried to play with the birds too
(luckily I have the cage bolted to the wall for this very reason!). The girls showed they do have a higher
prey drive and just as I was figuring out they were not going to "get it" after I had said no 100 times &
pulled them away just as many times, Zuri focused her attention on Dude, my big cat that was sitting
nearby. She was swatted once for bouncing in his face & barking & then we suddenly had a dog pile
on poor Dude, as Zuri & Joplin decided that the back-talking cat was not going to get away with that.
Soooo, needless to say we are looking for a cat-free & smallcritter-free home for both of these girls.
They have both bonded with my dogs too, so they would have no problem going to separate homes as
long as there is another dog there. They have an appointment for Saturday AM to get their shots
updated, verify they are spayed & to have their heartworm tests. We will not be holding up their
adoptions, so do not delay on asking for either one of them to be your new baby!
6/30/06 - Joplin & Zuri are 3 year old sisters from a puppy mill in Missouri (this is one of the awful
places were all the pet store puppies come from) that arrived late Sunday night. They were once pets
that were sold to a puppy mill for breeding stock-poor girls! Luckily neither were good "breeders" for
them & they were rescued by a wonderful couple, Julie & Jeff from Missouri, who rescue dogs from
the mills & get them to rescues.
Both are very sweet dogs and love other dogs and people and I have not seen a mean bone in their
bodies. They look so much alike, you can only tell them apart as Joplin has a tiny bit of a white stripe
on her nose. They are taking a little bit to adjust back to house life ("stairs, what are THOSE?!"), but
they are getting use to things. They are both crate trained and doing well on their housebreaking too. I
am working on them both with cats as Joplin really wants to chase them and Zuri just follows her lead.
These girls would be great to go to a home together or separately, as long as you have another dog for
their company. Zuri is much more dependent on Joplin & it seems like Joplin is the leader for them and
she watches out for her sister. They both will be going to the vet next week for heartworm tests and to
make sure they are spayed (are suppose to be) and then they will be ready to go home.
They both have pressure points & markings on their legs & feet, from either hard surfaces or cage
bottoms at the mill. Thankfully their wonderful boxer spirits were not broken fully before they were
rescued. It is so nice to see them melt when they are touched & petted, like they missed that so much
when they were stuck in the mill like livestock. Do you have a spot for one or both of these sweet
girls? They are waiting to have the perfect life so they can forget all about their past & know what it is
